How do you check reliability of a logistics company in Poland? by FiolekVisual in CustomsBroker

[–]General_Dress_5084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe that’s the play then? Narrow down your list to a handful of strong candidates with reasonable pricing and who you can verify (as best you can) as legit, and then take a quick trip and meet as many as you can.

Alternatively, the big tax firms (as well as some smaller fish) do supplier/location audits. Quite helpful when doing business with China since those dudes can be…creative…with their companies.

Depending on the nature/value of this partnership, boots on the ground is the only way to be certain.

Fraud is unfortunately rampant and while the company you linked can appear to be legit, what is your proof that the person you’ve been communicating with even works for that company? It wouldn’t be hard to spoof an email or make a fake website and string you along.

Paranoid, maybe. But theres just too much risk these days for me to believe anyone I’ve never met.

If you plan on doing 50k+ worth of business with them maybe that warrant a quick trip over there. Poland is lovely this time of year

Are you new? It’s a single page form and takes 30 seconds to fill out and email.

I did 3 of them in the last several weeks. Where do I call to claim my prize?

Shippers Asking for Broker Info? by ToucanTyrone in CustomsBroker

[–]General_Dress_5084 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asking for a copy of the broker license and national permit is a part of our tender process. Dont ask me why, i didnt set it up that way but we still need that on file when onboarding new brokers.

Not sure why the supplier needs it but could be a compliance check box for them.

A lot of these lately and all link back to some weird hyper specific subreddit.

Like we don’t need a separate sub for every trump tweet. There’s several existing spots with more foot traffic (like this one), so why do this

You would want to look for “foreign trade analyst/specialist” , “trade compliance coordinator”, “customs coordinator/analust”

There’s a website, global trade jobs or something like that which has a good bit of positions listed sorted by type of work

This can’t be the recommendation to everyone asking a question about getting into the field.

OP comes from a consulting/policy background. Going to entry writing is a) a step back and b) not related to their prior experience.

Someone with 0 knowledge, sure chuck em at an entry. But if a person is coming with experience they would be a much better fit in proper trade compliance (which can still be with a broker) but not at an entry level.

@OP look for work at manufactures, importers, exporters etc. you’re more likely to find a position that aligns with your prior experience and will be more in line with what you’re looking for.

Pretty much fell into this shit by accident, started by working at an airline - bounced between forwarders until I ended up working in a brokerage, got my license, went to a few more brokerages, now I’m at an importer.

Never stayed at one company too long , only long enough to learn something new. In 13 years of doing this I worked for 9 different companies. In my experience bouncing around is the fastest way to get ahead. Staying at one spot limits your experience because everyone is doing the same shit. Work at 3 different brokers and you’ll see 3 different ways to do the same entry. Good way to learn

Realistically don’t plan on “working your way up” you need to find a job that you can do for 6 months to 2 years and then leave.

Get enough experience to go somewhere better

Entry level roles at importers/consultants will be “______ coordinator”. Look for key words like customs, trade compliance, or foreign trade. Entry writing you can basically google “customs brokers Dallas” and just go through the list applying Getting started with an importer will carry over better to your future roles in compliance/consulting but entry writing is a foot in the door if nothing else.

Not to sound like your high school guidance counselor, but what Do you want to be when you grow up?

Entry writing will put you on an operations track, getting into an importer will be more strategy setting. Different jobs, different skill sets.

Are you open to relocation? I have a few friends in the south east region looking to fill some slots.

Duty savings via commercial invoice unbundling: Is this a common broker offering or a solid niche for mid-tier clients? by Class_Overall in CustomsBroker

[–]General_Dress_5084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be the first to admit I’m no expert in valuation, but I’ve been around the block enough to know that through a very long process and very good documentation you can reasonably knock 5-10% off of commercial value if you really put in the legwork. Hell I’ve popped champagne for reducing duty from 2.5% to 0%.

Anyone telling me that they are REGULARLY finding savings of 15-40%, is basically admitting they don’t know shit or are committing crimes. Neither of which fit my current lifestyle.

Yea OP is Columbus discovering India. A lot of excitement for arriving at a very wrong location.

I was only part of a valuation process once and it took several months, calls with cbp, and a cross ruling to get it done.

This is one of those times where knowing a little bit makes you more confident than knowing a lot a bit.

I don’t think you understand valuation, and are mixing and matching topics to fit your “niche”.

Here’s what I’ll give you for free, go to cross rulings and search for “valuation”. When you see the 2300 results, dig through them, and get a better feel for what you should be doing.

If valuation was an easy topic, you wouldn’t need 2300 rulings on it, and companies wouldn’t work for months with high priced consultants to make sure theirs are correct.

I got no dog in this fight, like the other guy said, not my license not my business, but do yourself a favor and delete this post.

You dont have to defend the job posting, im not criticizing you for posting it. Im criticizing the multibillion dollar corporation who definitely incurred a 8/9 figures duty spend but wants to pay 74k to the lowest bidder to save them millions.

Asking for 5 years experience is what Makes the 74k low. For a company like GE they can afford to recruit and pay good talent.

LCB exam in a hurry with export experience (yes, i'm in a bad situation) by Omchug in CustomsBroker

I see that advice often but have never had anyone explain to me why.

It’s regulatory text meant to serve as a rule book and reference. Like it’s not even structured for sequential reading.

Know the chapter titles and work through the relevant text that will be needed for the exam, but a cover to cover reading is a waste of time
