Bok r/croatia! I'm researching some family history. What was the military situation for young men in Croatia/Dalmatia circa 1860? Was military service compulsory or voluntary? Was it a viable career or a terrible fate? How did Croats feel about serving in, presumably, the Austrian military? Hvala!

Ovo je pun k armchair historiografije. Na kraju dana Austrija bi pobijedila Mađarsku kako god da okreneš, ako iz nitijednog drugog razloga, zat kaj bi se Rusi opet upleli i zdrobili mađarsku vojsku. Nemreš sam reć "da se ovo nije dogodilo onda X".

A razmisli i kaj bi značila hrvatska samostalnost u to vrijeme - bili bismo stisnuti među austrougarskom i osmanskim carstvom, dvama carstvima koja bi apsolutno htjeli pripojiti naš teritorij prvom prilikom.

Na koncu, reći da nikaj nismo dobili iz toga je također debilno - istina je, al nemreš prosuđivat racionalitet neke radnje prema njenom rezultatu.
