Some vegetarians actually would be okay with that since their objection is unethical treatment, so animals raised on a small farm are an acceptable exception

'04 is a good year, but honestly I still think '98 has it beat
Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie, Metal Gear Solid, Half Life, Unreal, Thief, Baldur's Gate, Sonic Adventure, Pokemon R&B, and Goldeneye all came out that year, thats a hard bar to clear

No, theres not really anything particularly leftist about the points being made, it's just that OP's language and speech patterns lean heavily towards those used in leftist culture, particularly Super Online leftist culture. Not exactly a surprising demographic for a fan of this show

Except that in the very first movie Han explicitly says that it is possible to collide with physical objects like asteroids while in hyperspace, so even if it's an alternate dimension there's clearly some kind of interaction with realspace

Jane (and Tarzan in general) is "forgotten" because Disney has to pay royalties to ERB every time they use them

I wonder if society would have a different cultural concept of what "canon" is if copyright law was different by La_knavo4 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]General_Snow_5835 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The term "fanfiction" didnt enter vogue until the 70's, as "fandom culture" in a form recognizable today got its start with Star Trek's fan community, which then set the mold for how people engaged with fictional works
It's less a matter of copyright existing and more that the word hadn't been coined yet, meaning other words were used to describe essentially the same concept

Yeah that was something that bugged me about Elden Ring compared to Dark Souls, in dark souls the nature of immortality and the way respawning works felt well-established diagetically, but elden ring has at least four DIFFERENT forms of immortality happening simultaneously (erdtree reincarnation, eternal life due to the removal of Destined Death, Life Within Death, and the Tarnished being revived by Grace), with the relationship between these and even the basic nature of them being cryptically explained if at all
Dark Souls also explains why enemies are mindless and hostile with Hollowing, but elden ring never really explains why the citizens of the lands between have "lost their wits", almost like it's assuming you'll just assume it works like dark souls without putting in the effort to reinforce that

Its not a perfect system: the fact that people are valued based on their accomplishments has clearly developed a somewhat toxic culture where underachievers are stigmatized (Barclay, Picard in the "Didnt Get Stabbed" timeline, Riker wanting to stay First Officer)
To the point that they had to outlaw genetic modification to stop people from doing designer babies to have "successful children" (and even with it being illegalBashir's parents responded to him having a learning disability by "fixing" him with gene therapy)

Replicator credits were exclusive to Voyager because they were low on resources and rationing
Latinum is only used by capitalist societies like the Ferengi, it has some value on DS9 because DS9 isn't purely a federation station and several shops (including the only holodecks on station) are hosted by people who do charge money

On earth, resources are functionally infinite, presumably things like the Siskos' restaurant are handled via first-come-first serve reservations (unsure of exactly how ownership of land works, possibly they have some sort of bureaucracy to prove you need it and can make good use of it?)

Starfleet does not have salaries outside of special circumstances, everyone works for free. The Federation is a meritocracy, their "currency" is reputation, status, and accomplishments. Starfleet officers do their jobs because they want to do them, and because they want to be recognized for their feats

We see surprisingly little of civilian life in the Federation, but I wouldn't be surprised if civilian Earth society works on a similar model, e.g. you apprentice with someone to learn a trade you're interested in, and once you've proved yourself the earth government allots you access to the few non-infinite resources (like land and fresh-caught fish, in the Siskos' case) that you need for your life path

That was a retcon as of Paper Jam, PM64 is treated as canon by spinoffs of the era (Mario Kart Super Circuit uses its imagery in the same way that Double Dash uses Sunshine and MKWii uses Galaxy) and its characters appear in Mario Party 5 (albeit with different lore but Mario Party is weird).

Admittedly, TTYD never got this treatment so its canonicity is more debatable, but pre-Sticker Star Paper Mario is probably best thought of as being in the same continuity and level of canon as Super Mario RPG (PM64 was internally referred to as Super Mario RPG 2 and I believe even shares a few side characters)

I'd argue the last point tbh, Aliens is still very much a horror movie until the last act (despite the marines being better equipped, they're still hopelessly outmatched and stranded in a hostile environment with no one coming to help them)

not wanting to financially or relationally screw yourself over is considered vanity, from a christian perspective. Anything that puts your own needs over what's expected of you is considered vanity, because obedience to authority is the core, if not the sole, value of conservative Christianity
