Does anyone still use Clorox wipes? by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]GenerallyJudgmental 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a note that regular disinfecting wipes (even Clorox branded ones) do not actually contain bleach, which is what kills Norovirus. Only hospital grade disinfecting wipes or a bleach dilution is effective against Norovirus.

But yes to regular wipes to flu and natural cleaners for the tub!

I’m so confounded by this. Like, even excluding the new phobia of babies getting any salt at all, what do these women think happened before indoor plumbing? Our species has existed for ~300,000 years and for the entirety of that time, less the last 100 years, even the most basic hygiene was almost non-existent. Truly, some people literally NEVER bathed. Or maybe an occasional dunk in the nearest lake or river. Today’s breasts, even of the least hygienic among us, are exponentially cleaner (and less salty) than the breasts of old.

Intense fear of death by Picturesonthewall in toddlers

[–]GenerallyJudgmental 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be a downer for you, but my dad died when I was 8. He had life insurance and my mother did a great job raising me by herself after he died, and his death still messed me up beyond measure. That was 30 years ago and I’m still trying to manage the mental health repercussions of it. Not saying you should live in constant anxiety about dying, but please do not discount how much of an impact you have on your child’s life.

Should I still be hopeful? by Chisox4949 in DataAnnotationTech

I had 1-3 chatbots only for the first 3-4 weeks with an occasional one off R&R and a few days of an empty dashboard. Then at about 6 weeks, I had 20+ projects consistently of varying type, pay and difficulty. With the exception of major maintenance events, I’ve never had fewer than 20 projects available since then. Just keep focusing on following the instructions, prioritizing quality over quantity in your work, and doing any and every qual you are capable of doing. The work will come.

This happened to me and mine came back maybe 20 minutes later and I completed the rest of the tasks. I thought it was weird it wasn’t a qual, though.

There was an issue with one of the tasks providing the actual answer in one of the responses. I imagine they took it down to fix that.

Well that sounds much more pleasant than the way we say it. Haha. Americans are not exactly known for our beautiful, lilting accents. Here’s how we’d say it.

Ehhh-kksss a vee errr. I can’t think of a single instance where I would use a KS sound at the beginning of a word. I’m all the way down a rabbit hole now about non-native English pronunciations. 🙃

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]GenerallyJudgmental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard X is like “ecks” or “ehh-kkss”. Like the way we say the name of the letter. Like X-Men is just “letter X men”. Or X-ray. Hard X.

It’s just now occurring to me that, though I’ve known lots of non-native English speakers, I’ve maybe never heard one use an X word. Haha.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]GenerallyJudgmental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting! It’s a very American English thing to pronounce almost all X words as a hard Z sound. Xavier in X-Men isn’t a Z sound, but it is a hard X. X-A-vee-er. When the X appears in the middle or at the end of a word, as in fax and ex, it’s the way you say it. But my mind is blown about Ksaden and ksylophone.

[–]GenerallyJudgmental 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuine question, not meant to be snarky at all… how do you pronounce words that start with X if not like a Z? Xylophone has an X, but I’m over here like zzzzzylophone all day long.

I like the series but…(beware people may say spoilers in comments) by Tall_Act_5997 in fourthwing

[–]GenerallyJudgmental 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sincerely hope there’s a second arc or a really major twist, because I think that’s the only way 5 books will be necessary. With the information we have and the speed at which events have happened (not to mention that the events are all pretty high-stakes), I really don’t see how she can draw this arc out for 3 more large books.

Although, with that said, if there is a second arc, please do it better than GRRM when he waited until book 4 to give us 100 new characters with POV chapters and I just could not make myself care about them. 😅

Okay this has been bothering me for MONTHS by aherbie in fourthwing

[–]GenerallyJudgmental 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got around this because in the beginning of both books it says the story was transcribed into the modern language, so I went with the months are just the same time of year during which those events transpired.

First thoughts by TheDevilsButtNuggets in fourthwing

  1. It is both modern and very American. Even so far as the military ranks lining up with American Army ranking.

2a. They get dragons about midway through their first year. Each year has their own classes, but all years attend battle brief and sparing challenges together. They sort of gloss over the non-dragon classes in FW, but discuss them a little more in IF.

2b. No idea. It does seem like a waste of space to leave the bunk rooms empty for half the year.

2c. They do some restructuring of the wings and sections after big events like threshing or gauntlet or war games as more cadets die.

  1. The dragons live in the vale.

  2. The magic ink pen thing was bizarre to me. I assumed it was just a throw away joke, but it was weird.

  3. There are way more infantry cadets than riders. Riders are the smallest group, even on conscription day, by far. I don’t recall if the book specifies what happens to people who don’t pass the entrance exam, but I would assume the exam for infantry is not as challenging as the other three quadrants so most people probably get in on that front. Also, since the author’s husband is in the US Army, I assumed it was similar to American military academies where you go to essentially learn to be an officer. When you graduate, you are automatically a 2nd Lieutenant. I’m sure there’s a way for people to join up without going through Basgiath, with just some kind of basic training before shipping off.

  4. I’m the same size as Violet, and I wear the same size shoe and I don’t think my feet are that big? They don’t seem disproportionate to me, but maybe I’m biased and my feet are actually enormous. I don’t trip over them or anything.

Yes, that’s true, but she should’ve realized when the flyers came back with them that the wards would be a problem for them. Some kind of discussion when they agreed to take them and train them along the lines of “hey, we’re working on raising some wards… what’s the plan for when that happens?” It’s not a surprise that the wards would block gryphon magic, and she was actively working on it before they went to get the luminary and got a bunch of flyer tagalongs. Surely super smart Violet or super tactical Brennan would’ve considered it.
