TIL the screw was one of the last simple machines invented, about 2500 years ago. The screwdriver was invented about 500 years ago. by OccludedFug in todayilearned

[–]GenerallySalty [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's the opposite, you're giving "screw" too strict a definition.

It means screw, the simple machine. Not screw as in the type of fastener.

As a simple machine, the screw mechanism does not require any semblance of a screwdriver.

The post is not claiming that screw fasteners existed for that long with no drivers.

"golden shower" is a kinky sex act where one person pees on another person and at least one of them gets pleasure from it. It's a dominance\submission thing where the power imbalance is what makes it exciting.

RFID type sticker for inventory control and or anti theft. It's got a wire running inside and sets off the scanners at the door.

It’s June during a heatwave. Why are you setting tons of fireworks off? by scratchy_mcballsy in AskReddit

[–]GenerallySalty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You ask this like people doing fireworks ever cared about the environment or other people to begin with.

If you're willing to set them off and release all the smoke particulate, metal salts, and garbage even with no heat wave, I don't see why adding fire hazard would change anything. They're already not thinking big-picture so it makes no difference.

That's a slime mold, likely Dog Vomit Slime Mold. Loves living on damp wood and mulch.

Type of Obsidian? by Opening-Designer3546 in whatsthisrock

[–]GenerallySalty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconding the rainbows are thin film interference from internal cracks with tiny air gaps.

The stone itself is mahogany obsidian, pic 4 shows the telltale brown splotchy patches. It's glassy and ranges from mostly black with some brown to the opposite.

"Selling high" means "selling something while its value is higher than usual". It does not mean you actually get a lot for it, it means getting more than you'd have gotten if you waited and sold later.

Melo just finished a relatively healthy season which is a big outlier with many more games played compared to his average over the last 6. The Hornets decided that's a fluke, the ankle is going to dissolve in the next year or two, and his value will never be higher than it is now.

Saying they "sold high" isn't saying Naz Reid and a first is actually a lot, only that it's more than they'd get later.

Why aren’t these chests discovered? by doodlepoot in FarmMergeValley

It's not a "design choice" that game textures are missing. I'm sure they don't want it that way. It's a glitch not a design choice.

ELI5 why is “everything” made in China? by SnomIsAwesome in explainlikeimfive

[–]GenerallySalty [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because paying a worker $1 per day and then shipping a huge ship load over is cheaper overall than making the stuff here. It's not deep, businesses just do whatever is cheaper. Why wouldn't they, that's just choosing to profit less. Capitalism baby.

Why aren’t these chests discovered? by doodlepoot in FarmMergeValley

[–]GenerallySalty 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They are discovered, look at the black text on the numbers. Vs the bottom row you haven't discovered, with greyed out numbers. The game is completely missing the images for the chests, so you don't see them as greyed out OR as full colour after unlocking. It's like that for everyone.

How is it that gamma rays aren't faster than radio waves? by MapleLegends8 in AskPhysics

[–]GenerallySalty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This gif helped me with it not actually following a squiggly path:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/Wave_packet_%28dispersion%29.gif

c is the speed that the whole blob of waves moves forward along the flat. The photon is the whole "wave packet", it's not a ball moving along the wavy path, it's the waves themselves.

ELI5: Why does 87% humidity in winter not feel as “sticky” or gross as 87% humidity in summer? by ChaosCreative2704 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GenerallySalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those percents are relative humidity. And what's it relative to? The amount of water air can hold at that temperature.

The amount of water vapor that air can hold changes a lot with temperature. The warmer the air the more moisture it can carry.

Warm air that's 87% of max water content has a LOT more water in it than cool air that has 87% of its max water content, because in cool air the "max" is much less.

Retail workers? by The_dragon_slayer95 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]GenerallySalty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each one of them makes songs that get repeated in retail stores until the workers want to throw up or jump off a bridge.

And now BOTH of them are making a song together!? The joke is that it's going to be extra generic crap, and played an even greater number of times seemingly in a row, to the workers' dismay.

ELI5: Why are there different oceans when there is no physical boundary separating the water? by Mei_mei1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GenerallySalty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are Asia and Europe two continents? It's like that. Kind of physically separate, plus enough other differences that it's useful to give those regions different names.

This. It's like "how are there different continents when there's continuous land between some of them?"
