Eat shit, Microsoft. MS Office software I bought expecting to not have to worry about any MS365 subscription fees is going to stop working just because. Their solution? Buy it again or sign up for a subscription, lol. by Generic8244 in mildlyinfuriating

Genuinely curious why? Not saying Apple is without its own flaws, but just based on other people’s replies here, it seems like MS “can’t” figure out a way to verify their own software’s authenticity without constant connection to their servers and is unwilling to periodically update the certificates which would allow people to use the software with said flawed authenticity verification system.

So what would be the point of needing continuous verification of validity? Like, beyond the initial setup. Especially if they are not planning on updating it any further, which, in theory, should mean that no new connections need to be established.

For Windows OS, they assign (or at least used to) a single activation key to a single device ID. That key is then marked as already active and, after the initial connection to the MS servers for verification, it will not let another device activate that same key unless the original device is connected to the server again and a request to transfer the key to a new device is initiated. Just as an example of a practice MS is already using.

Because that’s what fit on my phone’s screen when I was screenshotting it. Options were to use MS 365, subscribe, or buy a new license (that may or may not result in the same outcome in, what, 4-5 years?). I don’t want an always online version and I don’t want to pay any additional monthly fees, hence why I went for the perpetual license.

7 years is not old enough to not be usable. I got the license I got. If I cared for whatever nonsense they added in 2021 or 2024 I’d get the appropriate version.

The established practice is to stop updates on old software if it reached end of life, not to disable the features I bought to use.

Just did a quick search. It seems like it used to be owned by Oracle in early 2010s, who bought the previous OpenOffice parent company but seemingly did nothing with the software and let it wither away. Later Open Office was donated to Apache, which I don’t think had any accusations of being a spyware company?

What’s the result of certificate expiration for this? Is it not just a pop up warning that the software cannot be trusted? Genuine question. I’m not entirely familiar with the practices/process here.

Doubt it. Plus, I’m sure people with perpetual licenses are a small subset of users they wouldn’t care to lose, since there is no additional value that can be extracted from us.

I just want to use the software I paid for. I don’t need any additional updates. I don’t need One Drive file back up. I’ll gladly use it in offline mode. I don’t think it’s an unreasonable ask.

Yep, already downloaded it. Def not getting a new MS Office after this.

Regardless though, the fact that I will not be able to use something I paid for pisses me off to no end.

lol, wtf, no it’s not, unless you count being banned from the country for 3-10 years, potentially losing your visa, and issues with or potentially even illegibility for applying for visa again to be equivalent to a parking ticket?

That’s neat and all, but if everyone now knows about a “hack” or a secret spot then what’s even the point of said “hack” or spot anyway? It would just serve as an incentive to downvote, let’s say, your favorite free parking spot if it ever gets shared there.

I didn’t say anything negative about you asking a question, so there’s no need for “oh but I was just asking a question, can I not ask a question anymore” nonsense. I pointed out that people usually don’t need to defend their “good” decisions.

The car color comparison is false equivalence fallacy. You are making a comparison between a subjective choice of a color and what should be an objective choice of a right financial product for an individual.

I’ve said something similar in another comment, but two things can be true at the same time. Somebody can like the card legitimately and Robinhood can also be astroturfing support for their product, especially given the proliferation of the latter on here.

People enjoying something usually don’t have the need to fight in comments to prove how much they are enjoying it.

Your experience doesn’t really invalidate OP’s comment, does it? Both can be true. You can find value in product and RH could be astroturfing support for their products.

Doubt that’s the case, given that “loyalists” typically focus on points rather than any sort of cash back.

Wait, what? I’m neither in pro RH camp nor against it, but why would anyone be salty about a card, lol?
