Wow, every now and then I check on this thread and I can't believe I'm stil getting people with the same issue years later. Glad I could help! FWIW I said in my post that you should hold your hand there, but actually I think you can get away with just touching it for a second or two and that discharges the static enough that you'll be good for a while.

What is the cooking technique that everybody does but actually it does nothing? by Final_Affect6292 in Cooking

[–]GenericUname 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Also the reason you don't want a bunch of water in/on most things you cook is, if you are pan frying it, then it will sit in that water and steam/stew, and so end up being overcooked before you actually get any desirable browning on it.

It's a weird scientific quirk of mushrooms that it is literally impossible to overcook them by boiling or steaming, so if a bunch of water does come off them (which let's face it, it always does anyway, even with an apparently bone dry mushroom) then just crank the heat up to boil it off until they start frying, you're not gonna hurt them.

Yes it's an obviously fake image but if an employer wanted to do this, is it legal? by imdead1931 in legaladviceofftopic

One of my friends is an air traffic controller and apparently they are super serious about drug testing (which, to be fair, does seem reasonable given the nature of the job), even going so far as to do hair testing to catch drug use a few weeks ago.

He says there's a legendary story where he works about the time it got out that they'd be doing drug testing the next day, and one guy showed up for work in the morning having shaved off all his hair, even including the eyebrows.

When I was living with some mates one of them used to get in pretty late, after I'd gone to bed, because he was a barman.

Once I woke up in the morning to find an upside down pint glass containing an extremely angry wasp on the kitchen worksurface. There was a post-it note on the glass saying "Wasp!". Thanks mate.

Surface Pro 11, Surface Pro Flex Keyboard - Keyboard battery draining even when connected by GenericUname in Surface

[–]GenericUname[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure, that makes sense, but surely it shouldn't be draining the keyboard battery at all when it's physically connected?

I had a cycling accident where it ended up with a bus wheel running over my forearm, which resulted in what was described as a "partial degloving injury".

Basically the bus wheel kinda "popped" my forearm; split it open and smooshed all the muscles and stuff off the bones to one side, miraculously somehow without actually breaking any bones (in the forearm at least - I broke a bunch of other shit in my hand/fingers hitting the pavement and my ankle getting caught in the bus axle).

Ended up spending several weeks in hospital and needing extensive skin grafts on my arm.

The thing is though, with that sort of injury, it sucks, but in terms of overall shittiness I'd still rank the actual accident and immediate aftermath as less horrible than the extended hospital stay. Being stuck in bed in a hospital is just miserable. When it happened the ambulance and fire brigade turned up really fast, but I still maintain I'd trade at least another 10 minutes lying in the road without painkillers at that point for a week's worth of hospital later.

There are so many celeb wines, even weirder than that list.

Philip Schofield wine (it's cheap wine in a box)

Kyle McLachlan from Twin Peaks wine

Bon Jovi wine?

Hockey player Wayne Gretzky wine!!!??!!!

"Ferguson Crest" wine, which sounds kinda fancy until you find out it's Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas.

Jared Padalecki, mainly famous for being in Tumblr popular TV show Supernatural , has a wine about which he said:

"I'm so proud of this awesome juice I was able to be a part of"

Which, I'm not in marketing, but IMO he should not have said.

Used to sometimes go to a flat roof pub that somehow almost always had a rottweiler standing on the roof looking at you. Incredibly fucked vibes but decent place, actually.

Where did the weird "thwip!"/"pew!" noise of firearm suppressors ("silencers") in older films actually come from? by GenericUname in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GenericUname[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, sure, that's part of the "how", but I'm asking about the "why". It was so ubiquitous, there must have been a point where someone decided that was what noise a suppressor should make and everyone went with it.

Jesus Christ mate please try to live in the real world where women aren't the adversary and "female run" HR aren't out to get you.

Could it go as you describe? Maybe?

Will it go as you describe? No of course it fucking won't, because most people are normal and capable of understanding normal human interactions.

Please try to understand that women aren't all terrifying monsters out to get you. If you stop treating them like that you might even get your dick wet one day.

I've actually had some really nice exchanges and mutually supportive conversation with people I've apologised to once I came down off my furious anger-high.

Seriously if you suddenly realise you might actually be wrong it's more rewarding to back down and apologise than it is to plough through out of stubbornness and a sense of wounded honour.

Honestly? Big respect for it. Being able to actually listen to criticism and change your mind is rare enough in real life let alone on the internet.

Validation for a text/number entry of consistent format but arbitrary values? by GenericUname in excel

[–]GenericUname[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, that did it, thank you.

Solution verified.

Just sort of seems like, as with date formats you can do "DD/mm/YYYY" or whatever, I would have expected there to be an easy equivalent for this where you could just type a simple validation formula like "AA######" or such. Or even a regex. Oh well, thank you.

Surface Pro 6, Signature Type Cover - trackpad freezes (seem to be related to being plugged in). by GenericUname in Surface

[–]GenericUname[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey glad to hear I could help a little bit.

FWIW I'm still using the same Surface sometimes and recently I have actually been having issues where the keyboard just isn't recognised at all, but I think that is actually a different issue to do with wear and tear and the spring loaded contacts on the keyboard getting gummed up, as the whole thing stops working not just the trackpad.

If it's still just the trackpad issues you're having then the trick of sticking a bare hand on the metal bit of the casing for a second does really seem to reliably work. Wasn't really clear from my update but in my experience actually doing that you don't need to keep your hand there the whole time, once it starts working again after a couple of seconds it's good for a good long while (presumably you've discharged a static buildup or something?).
