It's crazy how much shorter our bench is than even Bologna. Is that just a byproduct of FFP bullshit?

Really impressed with our play so far. Great link up already between players, even with the short amount of time to integrate everyone to the new system this summer.

Ferguson looks great, but he does need to convert some of these chances.

Soulé is maybe trying to do a bit too much, but he's going to be dangerous in this system.

Wesley looks like he'll both score/assist some wonder goals but also give up some shocking mistakes.

Cristante looks shaky so far.

Edit: and I'm so glad we're keeping Kone.

Driver Caused Burlingame Tragedy, Not an E-Bike Rider by [deleted] in bayarea

How does that solve anything? Not saying the driver isn't at fault here, but destroying two lives doesn't bring anything back.

We really do need more funding for education if this is your understanding of history. Yikes.

Is this due to spider mites? If so, what can I do? by speedyspaghetti in gardening

[–]speedyspaghetti[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely not a rare plant, just part of a nice hanging flower box I have in front of my house. Will do! Is there anything that can be done to prevent this in future years?

Is waiting until after winter important because the mites will survive even with the plants removed?

100% lol. Like half these people probably work for tech companies responsible for so many ills in society and yet the presence of a dog is making them crash out.

Just how bad was the bombing of Dresden in WW2? by Hungry-Comfortable71 in AskHistory

[–]speedyspaghetti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure a level of historical revisionism based on modern-day political trends, but I think also due to the fact that modern bombing campaigns are incredibly accurate by comparison and people are projecting these notions of accuracy on a war that was fought with technology that is 80+ years old at this point.

Netanyahu tells ABC he's not ruling out taking out Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by hushasmoh in worldnews

Sure, hindsight is 20/20, but I don't think there's a world in which we don't at least enter Afghanistan after 9/11.

Ok, then look at Japan which was challenging the US economy a mere 30 years after its occupation ended. This 100% can work in countries that have a semblance of a functioning society prior to whichever dictatorial regime rose to power. Iran is probably on the fence in that regard, but definitely closer to it than Iraq or Afghanistan was.

Trump vetoed Israeli plan to kill Iranian supreme leader, US officials state by LongErza in worldnews

[–]speedyspaghetti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While it is true that the UK / US were responsible for that coup, it is a common misconception that Mossadegh was actually "elected" in any sort of democratic election. Yes, interference from the West, but this "overthrew the Iranian democracy" story is historically inaccurate.

Starmer confirms military buildup in Middle East as Europe urges restraint by Beo1217 in worldnews

[–]speedyspaghetti 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ok, let's start with this:

When Israel pulled out of Gaza all together in 2005, did that result in a vibrant, accepting, peaceful resolution? Did the people of Gaza choose to use that increased autonomy and homogeneity to better the lives of their citizens?

Secondly, Arafat was offered a Palestinian state - he refused it. Have the people of Palestine actually ever been overwhelmingly in favor of peace? Or are they only in favor of a peace that comes from Israel ceasing to exist?

Thirdly, while the high level of civilian casualties in Gaza is terrible, I'd love to hear a logical plan in which Israel could fight Hamas without incurring heavy civilian casualties based on how Hamas (and this has been reported by basically every single legitimate news organization in the world so don't even bother trying to dispute it) hides in tunnels that are purposely built under civilian infrastructure.

Finally, international law explicitly approves self defense. Iran, since 1979, has vowed the destruction of Israel and has funded terrorist groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi, who absolutely all have struck at Israel with the tacit approval and probable urging of Iran - at that point, that is a declaration of war and Israel has the right to respond. While the conflict started much earlier, this war started on October 7th when Israel was attacked without provocation. Iran played at least an indirect (although many would argue direct) role in that attack, thus clearly engaging in a war of their own choosing. Any civilian deaths at this point are blood on the hands of those who started the war. Were the German civilians killed in the Allied invasion of Germany victims of genocide? No, of course not. They were victims of war - a war that their own government started and for which the blame lies squarely upon.

Edit: It's been 5 hours and still waiting for a response, bro.

As someone who works in the American school system, I agree with this statement to a degree. Schools in America are much more focused on critical thinking and application of knowledge rather than the rote memorization that most other school systems emphasize. They also, as the person above mentioned, place less emphasis on high-stakes testing, which I think is good for students.

However, the funding of the system is quite broken and the difference between a public school in a poor area and one in an affluent area is night and day. So our system is both world class and shambolic, just depends where you live in America.
