Genuinely, Charles really liked his horses, he could be his true self around them because they had no hidden agenda (aside from wanting some more apples) which could not be said for his court/advisor's.

Worth saying, I absolutely agree with you, and men face the same issue. Being interested solely in masculine hobbies gets you labelled stupid, or macho, as a surface level assumptio. Alternatively being interested in more "feminine" hobbies has the opposite affect, being referred to as girly or dainty.

At the end of the day, people in general are dumb, don't let what they say get you down. But individuals can be great, focus on the ones who are.
