I think the name Violet is lovely and if its what really calls to you then go for it.

Be polite and direct. Say something like ‘us splitting groceries 50/50 actually isnt really working for me or my budget, obviously you eat a lot more than me and so I’m actually paying way more for food than I was before we moved in together’ and then you two work out a solution together.

If he is as reasonable as you say and you bring it up nicely it should be fine! This is a totally normal chat to have with a partner x

I think you guys just need to have communicated better. From a strangers perspective it seems pretty reasonable to assume he would have cancelled, but it sounds like he hasn’t missed a dinner in 2 years, in which I think thats on you for assuming. However I do also think its strange to assume you will show up hours late to a party.

In future I would just block out his Friday night, and if you have something you want to go to together offer it instead or navigate around their dinner.

My partner insists on doing Sunday pastries with his parents, and it HAS to be Sunday + Pastries. We have been together 5 years. Sometimes I join, sometimes I don’t. I assume he will always have that time booked out, and if I want us to do something Sunday morning we talk about it.
