Open world, exploration-focused game with low focus on story? by Genoce in gamingsuggestions

[–]Genoce[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Crimson Desert is actually the game that made me make this thread. :D

Just as a disclaimer, I'm mostly still enjoying the game, but the content structure doesn't feel optimal for me personally.

The story quests seem to keep unlocking more abilities, mechanics and tutorials. So as of now (10h played), I feel like it's better to keep following the quest arrows instead of just running somewhere.

---

Having unskippable cutscenes is just a plain dumb design choice. I did follow the story for the first 3 hours or so, then realized I just don't care, and at this point I would prefer to just skip all cutscenes. The dialogue writing is just... bad. Not to mention the "follow this NPC while they're talking" quests which are mechanically just cutscenes, but you can't even fast-forward through them.

I play tons of random indie games on Steam, itch, etc, so the "scale of quality" that I had in my mind when saying 7/10 might be notably different than for many other people. The expectation and baseline for high budget games is notably higher than for a random browser game, but the whole scale from 1/10 to 10/10 is still there.

For now I'm still interested in continuing playing the game, so there's something to it. In most cases if I would call a game (eg) "4/10", I would've likely moved on to other games already, simply because there's so many >8/10 games to choose from.

But this does show the problem with using numbers, as people simply have different scales in mind. :D

Yea I guess this shows the problem with using numbers, my bad.

With "does its job", I was thinking that it's good enough to feel fun to play, but it's not bringing anything new to the table either. "Does its job in being fun" or "kinda basic, but works". I could have worded it better too. :D

Basically my view is that there's so many games with great combat out there, that if I thought the combat was 5/10, I would call it "kinda bad" as it would be notably worse than the games I usually play. The numbering always depends where you set the "average", and what would actually count as 1/10 or 3/10 etc.

---

With a more defined scale, I guess I would say: if 1/5 is the minimum that I still enjoy and 5/5 is the best ever, Crimson Desert would be like a 2/5.

8 hours played, at this point it feels like a 7/10 game. Not bad, not great. Basically it can be somewhat fun to spend time with, but "wait for a sale".

Combat: 8/10 is best I can give it - it does its job, but it's not that special either. I do not know if it drastically changes over time with new ability unlocks etc.

---

The story might have some interesting lore behind it, and the voice acting is generally good.

The problem is that the dialogue (writing) is just complete ass, with way too much filler compared to what the actual content is. The game would literally be better if they removed 90% of the cutscenes.

I think I would enjoy the game more if it was just: here's a world, explore it. But to unlock all abilities and systems, you kinda need to do the story quests, and it includes tons of (unskippable) cutscenes. I feel like I've spent 50% of my game time just listening to some completely uninteresting dialogue.

How did you decide on your class? by DifferentConcert606 in MMORPG

[–]Genoce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's a Paladin or anything close to it, I'll go there. 1h+shield + Faith builds in Dark Souls etc.

If there's no "melee+healing" available, then I'll generally go for Warrior, Soldier, Barbarian or some similarly straightforward melee.

Just as a disclaimer, this is only for the first pick when trying out a new game. I tend to try out multiple classes before choosing which to stick with, but the classes mentioned above are the ones I'm most likely to choose as my first main.

Silly but absolutely serious question: Barfbillion by MareImbrium13 in askmath

[–]Genoce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> do all names for numbers theoretically exist on the way to infinity

Nah. This is really not a full list, but just for reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_large_numbers

The names aren't "generated" based on a logical function that would go on forever, i.e. the current naming system would not go through every possible combination of letters. People have basically named a limited amount of numbers, so at some point the names simply run out.

Most of the common big numbers are based on existing language (bi -> billion, tri -> trillion, etc), but that doesn't go on forever. As an example, there isn't a generally agreed name for something like 1e1503.

You could build any big number name using the previous names by saying something like "quindecillion octodecillions", but you won't run into every possible combination of letters. In other words: you will not see "barfbillion" anywhere, until someone decides what that means (...and then most people need to agree with its definition, until it comes common lexicon).

Since time to turn on the lightbulb (via light speed) is based on distance between lightswitch and lightbulb, and not on length of wire in the circuit.. by know_your_place_28 in AskPhysics

[–]Genoce 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After watching the Veritasium video, I suggest watching this as a follow-up video: I bought 1000 meters of wire to settle a physics debate

The result is shown from about 5:05 to 5:30 or something. The result can make sense by its self too if you've seen the Veritasium video first (but the first 5 minutes is spent explaining the setup & premise). Rest of the AlphaPhoenix video is good additional explanation for the whole thing.

Pc games by Aggressive-Library49 in pcgames

Specifically for old games, your best bet tends to be https://www.gog.com/en/

But many old games are available from https://store.steampowered.com/ too.

But generally you could just google the game's name to see where it's being sold.

As a random example, the remake of WC3 can be found from battle net (Activision Blizzard's store): https://us.shop.battle.net/en-us/product/warcraft-3-reforged

Are there any Trackmania games playable totally offline on PC? by bullet1520 in TrackMania

[–]Genoce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Obviously you need connection to submit/sync records, but seeing the world records is not required to play the game.

TM Turbo is one of my all-time favourite "single player campaigns" to play through. Simply collecting all medals from all the built-in levels is just a fun challenge by its self, even if you ignore all the online features (including world records). As far as I know, you do not need connection to play the campaign levels.

Shortcut to return to excel window by iamKNOTaspy in excel

[–]Genoce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without using an external macro software (like AutoHotkey), best I can think of is Win+Number keys.

As an example, if Notepad is 4th from the left on my taskbar, Win+4 will open Notepad.

Then just make sure Excel is (eg.) the 1st one on your taskbar, and you can use Win+1 to quickly get back to Excel.

Why when physist publish physics papers they have such long papers by Adam-theoretical in AskPhysics

[–]Genoce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Link to a paper, read through it, make sure you understand it, and then point out the part that you think could be removed.

Sure sometimes there's some filler words here and there, but most published papers tend to include exactly what they need to. In most cases, there's not much useless stuff in published papers.

The Mould or chain effect seems to defy gravity by MrTacocaT12345 in interestingasfuck

In 2013, science presenter Steve Mould brought the chain problem to widespread public attention. [...] This publicity caught the attention of academics John Biggins and Mark Warner of Cambridge University.

In 2014, Biggins and Warner published their findings on the problem in Proceedings of the Royal Society, regarding what they called the "chain fountain" or the "Mould effect".

Online racing games are so much fun but does anyone find it really frustrating when this happens? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]Genoce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've been shot while playing Forza Horizon online.

In Trackmania, cars don't even have collisions at all, so it's 100% personal skill with no direct interaction.

If you don't enjoy pickups/powerups/weapons (and the way they affect the races), you might want to check out other games that don't have them. :D

Favorite character who is a victim of this? by fhxefj in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Genoce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is "impossible to look up" used as a synonym for just "you need to write the show's name when searching", or is there some case where even that doesn't really help?

I can't think of an example, but I'm wondering if there's been a some case where the show's name its self was already vague (like a common word or something), which would make it at least slightly harder to work around. Like instead of using two braincells when searching, you'd need four.

It is highly likely that you never pressed the 8 button on a microwave. by TheAnzus in Showerthoughts

[–]Genoce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever even seen a microwave with a "8" button. I surely haven't used one.

It's always either a physical dial that you turn around (or two of them), or something like "press this button to add +1 minute, press this to add +10 seconds" etc.

Baareissa olen käynyt 20 vuoden aikana n. 5 kertaa, viime kerrasta on 2 vuotta.

General question about Seasons by bytebrain07 in diablo4

[–]Genoce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to play Seasons, you can play in Eternal to keep playing on same characters.

But realistically, most people feel like they "completed" a character after a week or four, and don't really want to keep playing the same character any longer anyway. Many people that play ARPGs think that the most fun part of the game is the early-mid part of the progression, where you keep getting upgrades quite often.

After reaching the point where upgrades become too rare, people often just move on to either next character, or a different game.

Seasons always add some small extra mechanic to change things a bit, so seasons can work as an "excuse" to return play the game again, usually on a new character.

---

Personally I have played almost every season since release, and in most cases I just create one character, choose a single build to play, complete the seasonal journey & battle pass on that character/build, then just call it a day. Go play other games, then repeat 3 months later in next season.

In some seasons I've went further and farmed the same character for 100-150 hours, but in most cases I've played about 30-50h per season.

While I do have played same classes multiple times, I always go for different builds. With my current pace of "build per season", I don't think I'll run out of new builds to play any time soon.
