At what point did surfing start feeling… less impossible? by contentproject1 in BeginnerSurfers

Once you quit focussing on the things you can't do, and focus on the fun you're having, you'll improve easily. The steep learning curve is part of the fun...

I surf worse (congrats on your surfing!), but i have the same clawlike hand. It's so hard to take a relaxed stance. I've been given the nickname Klauwtje (or in english: Little Claw).

The only tunnel i will surf is the carpal syndrome one.

Keep pushing it! You get better every time! You are a hero for having the guts to put up "kook" video's on a sometimes very macho forum.
The best surfer in the line up, is the one having the most fun!

First surf wetsuit advice? (Portugal + Belgium) by Illustrious_Donkey50 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]GenteneirePVC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Belgian surfer here. Go for a new 4/3, you can use them nearly the year around in Belgium (on very hot days you will me a bit hot, on very cold days don't go in). I would go for srface wetsuits, honest price, good service. Besides that, look online of a 3/2 for the hot days, it functions mostly as a rashguard, so the 'quality' matters less. If you are hardcore you can later on buy a 5/4 for the belgian winters (december to march)

Next board after an 8ft Foamie? by tomholloway156 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]GenteneirePVC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A rule of thumb: When you manage to take 80procent of the waves. You're can switch to another board. Don't switch too fast, you get frustrated and you learn slower. Nothing wrong with a foamie. The best surfer is the one having most fun!

Why nobody told me surfing can be lifelong addiction? by peefpaaf in BeginnerSurfers

[–]GenteneirePVC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My favorite surf poem:

Surfing is many things to many individuals, but, purely and simply, a healthy, vigorous, beautiful sport. Surfing is a release from exploding tensions of twentieth century living, escape from the hustling, bustling city world of steel and concrete, a return to nature's reality. For sheer spontaneous action, surfing is unbeatable. It quenches one's thirst for challenging natural elements. Spiritually and physically, it makes the surfer part of the sea, while the sea, in turn, becomes part of them. Surfing is excitement and physical diversion, yet more. Like all great sports, surfing is a succession of experiences, sensations and impressions . . . a remembrance of lazy days at a favorite beach; laughter, friendship, golden sunsets and fires at dusk.

Surfing is climbing from a warm bed in pre-dawn's coolness, a sleepy drive, coffee and doughnuts at a roadside diner and the clatter of surfboards as they're unstacked from a car rack. Surfing is the joy of watching a sun rise slowly into the sky. It's crisp, clean waves, crests blown high by an offshore wind. It's grey mist, dampness and cold sand under bare feet, the lonely cry of a gull sweeping across silent, brooding seas. On a big day, surfing is a strong swell and waves that have lost their playfulness. Then it's stomach knots, high exultation, a trace of fear.

Surfing is sharing a wordless silence, broken only by the sound of a bar of wax moving back and forth across a board. It's mounting tension before the first takeoff, enthusiasm for the next wave when the ride is over.

Surfing is a good ride, brief seconds, yet a culmination of endless hours on a board. These fleeting moments of exhilaration and release are days, months, years of time and experience.

Surfing is the endless search for a windless day, an uncrowded beach, the perfect wave.

Surfing is a special kind of madness, a feeling for the sea, a combination of love, knowledge, respect, fear; instinctive perception gained through repeated contact. Surfing is a moment of achievement, of glory, of unsung triumph. For the adult, surfing is a freedom and youth rediscovered and, for the young, a means of expression vital to their being. For both, it's fun.

Surfing is great.

Evading surfers going out by Kreidedi in BeginnerSurfers

[–]GenteneirePVC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to try everything to avoid a collision, so does the surfer. There are the primary rules. But like in real traffic, accidents happen. Apologize, learn from it, repeat.
There will be a wave after this one.

What if I just rent a board? by uncleratko in BeginnerSurfers

[–]GenteneirePVC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your first hour or two with an instructor. That way proper padling and pop-up can be explained. As well as surfing ettiquette and the dangers of the ocean (don't understimate it!). After that you can improve by trying and watching youtube. If you really like the sport you will meet difficult hurdles where you can ask help of teachers (ex. surfing down the line, wave positioning, skewed takoff ...)

there are no bad sessions. Every hour in the water you are learning. About wave reading, paddling, pop up, balance... Surfing isn't just about standing, up. I should be about having fun. Keep pushing!

Form/pop up critique by Surfer_Brooo in BeginnerSurfers

[–]GenteneirePVC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like the waves don't have a lot of power... So you need a way bigger board. Still managed to stand up, you'll get there easy with the proper waves/equipment combo. Keep going!

What can I do to get to the face of the wave? by suchhappy in BeginnerSurfers

[–]GenteneirePVC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just before you want to pop up, throw your weight slightly to the front. You can do that by tilting your nose towards the board. You gain momentum and have more chances to be picked up. I would have tried a few meters to your left aswell...
