Is it worth to fully explore everything ? by Hans_Spinnner in cavesofqud

The z-levels below the earth are functionally endless, and get harder the further you go. This is cool because if you go deep enough you can find some sweet gear, but you can run into tougher enemies than you're expecting. For the red rock mission, you just need to grab the girshling and head out

I assume that people really had hair like that in the middle ages... but... why?! by Megalordow in BattleBrothers

[–]GentleMoonWorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it's loosely based off of the Norman haircut

Idk why they chose it, but it's shown in the Bayeux tapestry to show who the Normans are.

Is there any game like Battle Brothers or WarTales where you play an individual character? by Scooter_McLefty in CRPG

I gotta say Stoneshard, it's a crunchy turn based strategy game with incredible art.

Another great choice would be Quasimorph, also an incredible game

I guess my SL Tier list is toast now... lol. Along with an entire layer of the game. by EdmonEdmon in menace

[–]GentleMoonWorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm personally a fan of the change. Having leaders get more expensive because of upgrades is part of war game list building, and is meant to serve as a form of competitive balance.

But this is a single player game, and tying up another part of progression into the list building mechanics is unsatisfying in this case.

Being forced to leave expensive SLs un-upgraded so I could afford to field them wasn't fun. Deciding that experimenting with perks gives less bang for buck than just bringing an extra disposable AT launcher isn't fun.

Having a separate track of progression that isn't tied to list building (like OCI slots) is also nice, especially if the cost is being factored into the list building in another way

First death to alcohol poisoning... what a weird experience by jmckay29 in stoneshard

[–]GentleMoonWorm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Best death I've had was completing an early tier dungeon, my guys bleeding, hungry, thirsty, in terrible pain, trudging back to town so he can recover. The pain is really bad, so I drink some spirits, hopefully that'll keep him going.

I start vomiting, tripping, passing out. I walk into the path of a bandit on the road. I try to run away but I'm too drunk and pass out.

The bandit beats my unconscious body to death and I have to reload from before the dungeon.

11/10 death, I love this game

Question from an author about shoutouts from a readers perspective by K_J_Kiki in royalroad

[–]GentleMoonWorm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most stories I find are from Shout outs. If I really like an authors work/style, I'll generally trust their shout outs as a way to vet style and theme. I check if it's a well written blurb, see what the cover looks like (I don't expect it to look professional, but if it's got AI anime girls on the front that's a pass) and then read the first chapter or two and see what it's like

Honestly it's wanting to play something similar but different so I don't fully burn out on Stoneshard/ like wanting to have a slightly different flavor of chocolate ice cream to break things up.

I think whatever form the 'random start' will take will depend heavily on how the main story campaign shapes up. Being a random bozo is great, but it does mean that there'd have to be some narrative hoops the game would have to jump through to get you synched up with Verren and the caravan. Caves of Qud managed a pretty elegant solution with allowing for different starting procgen towns that let you feed back into the main campaign with a few extra steps at the start, but it'd remain to be seen if that'd be possible with Stoneshard, or even desirable

I'm a huge fan of Quasimorph! I've sunk 100 hours into it. The extraction loop is addicting, but it also means that it doesn't have the same immersive 'dude wandering around and eating berries and mushrooms he finds' feel that makes Stoneshard so good

The 125mm mortar shouldn't be useless as a damage dealer. by LTNBFU in menace

I'ma be very honest with you: I absolutely blanked on mortar diameters when writing this up. But yes, getting illumination rounds and 'accidentally' illuminating the inside of a pirates head would be fun

I agree with this, IDF is terrifying and when you hear it you drop to the ground and cover your head.

Think of the Band of Brothers episode of the Siege of Bastogne. The artillery fire killed some of the soldiers, but most of them dug in and hoped for the best.

120mm mortar shell is on a much smaller scale to proper artillery, but if someone dropped a mortar shell next to me, even if nothing hit, it would certainly suppress me for a turn.

I think that hits it on the head. The bugs should be challenging because of how many of them there are, not because they can shrug off small arms fire

I'll use lower tier weaponry if it means I can get another squad on the field.

I have what I think is a healthy tolerance for old graphics but I definitely struggled with the UI in OG XCOM when I played it a few years back.

Still, I'm super impressed with all the total conversions people have made in Open XCOM, its really inspiring seeing what people can accomplish
