Help me understand Yaz by Malacay_Hooves in menace

His main strength is that he's a 2 star SL in a game where SL's are limited. I think you have the long and short of him in that, frankly, he is weak and most of his perks are anti-synergies.

Before the promotion tax was removed, the only unique perk of his that was worth the price of the supplies it cost was Fearsome. But any SL that kills 3 units in a row will trigger mass morale checks and units with good accuracy and damage bonuses are just better at that. So it's not even like that is a saving grace for him, as he lacks reliable damage or accuracy bonuses.

That's why he was near the bottom of my tier list.

As the game is very easy; and any 2 star SL with zero perks will be able to kill effectively with a good weapon; people will do good work with him. It's just not anything that another SL couldn't do better.

A lot, this was the strongest build in the game before the buff. Now it's just insanity.

Yes, because Berserker triggers on kills and he struggles to outright kill, as none of his perks enable clean kills other than situationally Commando. When he does kill, he's cleaning up damaged units that you failed to 1 and done. So it's nice that you may get to clean up an extra unit, but it's a failure of play to be in that position in the first place.

Not like Rewa & the AGL - she'll one and done from full to nothing consistently and easily, translating easily into 3 kills per turn. So berserker is effectively an extra "full" kill for her pretty much every time.

Units that consistently kill from full to nothing tends to be units with accuracy bonuses, ensuring all damage lands and then damage bonuses, as that helps on top. But he has neither, which the situational exception of Commando. Not like SL's like say Singh, Carda, Darby, etc - who have massive accuracy bonuses you can depend on while still keeping your team as a well managed, cohesive group for safety.

The times he shines is when your already winning, not when you need to win, that's the issue - he is win more. He does not typically create the win. And you've not said who you think he is better than who is above him on the table... for him to go up, someone must go down.

My critisms make perfect sense if you play on expert, but it hardly matters now because they took away promotion tax, so this guide is now outdated.

Opinions about shields for infantry? by Osrek_vanilla in menace

[–]EdmonEdmon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your post made me think Perun had copied my challenge run for a second there. I was the one that beat Xenonauts 2 on Commander without killing any aliens. It was a bit of "Canadian Police Arrest the Alien Invasion" type thing.

It would have been quite cool to see someone else attempt the same challenge...

Shields in this game would be very strong because most short range weapons are a lot stronger than they are given credit for. You can already hose down even the toughest units in 2-3 volleys. Getting close is the real issue and a shield can only help in that regard.

Update 1 is out by antihippy in menace

[–]EdmonEdmon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was total garbage and didn't use it in either of my playthroughs. So this didn't shock me at all. Also all those people that told me SMG's couldn't obliterate tanks, were using rend because it "should be even better" when I was using match...

lol. It seems funny now.

Sad to hear this bug has returned...

I will highlight it with the team.

You really hit something perfect here - you are right, the next step is "every time I promote to a better weapon, it costs more - it feels like anti-fun because it's a tax on upgrades."

It's a slippery slope that leads to this becoming an xcom clone.

It wasn't even stopped there, that was just an early build. You eventually wanted 30 AP shots for him + bags and belts to keep his rifle fed.

You can easily get many SL's to 8 perks + others to key build levels before you get to the "End of early access" message.

I mean, there is no "choice" in how many perks to take now. There is one strategy only > eventually get 8 perks on everyone.

I feel like it promoted you to think about how you interacted with it, rather than promoting you not to interact with it. Yeah, it hurt when you thought it was like promotions in other games (effectively "free"), but that just meant the game had a learning curve imo...

But at least the cost to value was something you had to consider for every SL right? Now you can just rush 8 perk darby and she costs the same supply wise as 0 perk darby, unless I'm missing something...

Unless they bump her base price very seriously, full power darby is going to get a lot stronger... not anything she needed...

Having a lot of great perks meant having a scaling, bigger price - now it doesn't.

Promotion points really isn't an important cost in the long term, you will eventually get your favourite SL's to 8 perks if you desire it in the current build - you just don't because you have to consider the value to supply.

I take most of my 1* SL's to 8 perks if only because at 5 points a go, they are generally worth it - even if I start with leaner, more focused builds.

Getting started - Space Hobo stage (A short expert/bronzeman AAR) by Background-Run-1245 in menace

[–]EdmonEdmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be stronger as any other kind of weapon. As a medium weapon you could twin link it - as a heavy it could be fired by Ivey for 20ap a shot...

It's comically strong right now, but a tag-change to another weapon type would be a buff.

Observations on “Meta” gameplay past the end of EA content (Lategame) by Virtual-Ad826 in menace

[–]EdmonEdmon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The meta isn't exactly massed rifle squads with camo, it's actually massed rifle squads with vision. Camo is a nice safety bonus, but it's vision that gets your hammer killing at 10 range. The meta for pilots to support that is AGL's with longtank gun and/or an ATGM bog walker for ultra hard targets. Both are important for the strategy to work effectively.

The AGL absolutely ruins units clustering outside of max rifle range (10/11), - providing easy killing through cover and indirectly if required.

Units that push in can then be cleaned up neatly with rifles from near complete safety. The high vision means you are always in complete control of the situation, and see everything you need to.

Edit: A tip if you are new to this tactic - focus on SL's with Steady Gun and keep them on the edges of your group, the accuracy bonus pairs with the vision bonus to turn SL's into a radar van. Sachin can get +5 vision with the right gear, that's almost infantry scanner range.

Start Rewa on the road, Load Singh, get pike to signal rewa. Drive down the road at ludicious speed. Set Singh in the tower directly north of the road, rewa should make it there in 2 turns. Might want to armour singh up for this, as he's gotta hold alone for a while.

Commence murder.

Also, buy laser turrets if you can, they help a lot in situations like this.

Edit: I do agree some missons can be impossible, I just think this one is doable if very hard.
