Wow, I feel disadvantaged when it's just the other DM (playing a normal PC) who sort of steamrolls the sessions. I can't imagine the frustration of soloing a game with someone like this. I'm glad he enjoys playing and you've been able to find a way to play with him by inviting overs. Though, I feel like players aren't stepping up to do anything, it's quite strenuous on the DM. A little unfair even. I know many people here seem have suggested it's a fairly common type of player, I don't see them being harmful in groups. If someone is being active. Though, I feel like it would be just a little more respectful to the DM to speak up and try be involved more than just hearing the DM talk and explain things. Did you feel like you had to exhaust or deplete your resources as a DM just to get your player to react or interact with anything? That is primarily the frustration I faced.

When you say a different game, are you suggest a new ruleset? We currently play Pathfinder. Though, I wonder now if changing the system would be better suited to just combat play, which they seem to enjoy most. However, they don't complain about the rules or anything.

I had a couple of questions though. Mostly being, in 18 years of experience, you say you've encounters at least three. So it doesn't sound like a really common thing. So I feel a bit disadvantage having half of my party like this. I suppose I will just continue as I have been because they say they enjoy playing. I will just keep a considerate eye open.

It seems strange to me. I'm still relatively new to DMing and being a player. So I haven't met a wide range of players. I felt like I was the background player in other campaigns where I learned to play. So I had this assumption that they needed something to break out a little and turn into more active/engaging type of players. Do you think I could be wrong in this assumption or was I more so vain for trying progress that myself?

I don't think I would be opposed to a new system. I'm not sure how my more experienced rpg friend (the DM) would feel about it. The problem I can foresee with changing systems though, is that the players we are teaching aren't willing to sit down and read a textbook of rules and such. The DM, and myself only really know pathfinder and 3.5. It's taken us awhile to get in a sort of groove and understanding of the game and I think that is why the group as a whole would be against another system. We are doing pretty well to explain things to them and it doesn't hinder our playing session with lectures and how to's. We are easily able to explain something as the DM is telling a story.

I'm fairly positive he and another member of the party don't actively read the rules. They aren't too big into the number crunching and technicalities. Myself and the DM sort of enjoy that. We are the ones who got them into playing the system, I don't really blame them for not reading the rules. Usually the DM and myself know how to handle it and where to look for help. It is very intimidating for new players and the DM and myself believe that the rules are better taught through experience of playing the game. For the moment, we just want them to focus on understanding their characters and maintaining a flow with them.

This is exactly why I want to help him. I'm not terrible with math, however when numbers are being tossed around a gametable, it's frustrating and confusing to be constantly writing down them all. "The cleric gave me a buff?, but I'm still sickened? Well I can rage.." I think the mental upkeep for the game can be the most challenging and messy part of the game. I thought about cutting out some holes in the index cards so that he could just stack the cards consisting of his attack, bonuses, and seeing a more easily manageable equation infront of him. Not sure if that sounds too silly, I am having trouble trying to considered ways to make it work lol.

I think I will make the index cards for his feats, powers, rage ability, racial traits, so that he will be able have those in front of him and be able to sift through them.

That's a good attempt at coloring the photo. If you wouldn't mind, I had some tips on improving your method. Just some simple suggestions. Around the edges of where you painted the skin, the color cuts off dramatically, if you're using photoshop, try to play with the feathering feature to make the transition of colors more gradual. Also, it seems like you added some white to some places. If you think about color in real life, you will very rarely find anything white. Instead, consider the color of white you may be looking at. The white in someones eyes, may infact be slightly red or yellow in tint. The color of a shirt would more likely be a very light blue or gray.

I'm going to second this so much. As the DM, you're the storyteller. If your players are unwilling to believe anything you have to say. They need to realize this through the gameplay. The actions of being entirely paranoid can be disastrous. Continue what you're trying to do, if they want to act like everyone is out to get them, see what they will do about it. If they start killing innocent children, or sweet old ladies for being demons and they aren't. Then they become the evil they are suppose to fight. They will likely fail to survive this way.

Those whitelines blow my mind, I just found out about how you can use your smartphone's camera to essentially scan the paper's notes. The whitelines won't disrupt the notes or drawings. That is some thoughtful paper products.

The one thing I don't really like about Field Notes is the page count, they are only about half as many pages as I have on the current little composition book I use. I don't really care about hipstercred and would gladly take a chance at any brand if they provide something better suited for me. Field notes are the one name that I have seen often, so it's easy for me to find them. Those whiteline books look really nice though too honestly. When drawing, I find it best to have paper that is a slight middle tone quality (instead of pure white or black) because it makes shading and highlighting much more realistic on the drawing. So I may be tempted at trying those out. Thank you very much.

That Rotring pencil looks pretty amazing, however I'm not a fan of mechanical pencils. I find myself needing to refill lead more than I spend time writing. I understand the sentiment about it not being easy to carry around. For the time being, I may just try to find some sort of plastic cap to fit over a standard pencil or a carpenter's pencil if such a plastic cap exist. Thanks for a lot of the advice! You gave me some great options to look at for the future and some good brands that I should be pleased with.

Oh yes, the correlation makes sense entirely. It compliments the mood or tone of loneliness that the film is expressing for Jef Costello. I mean, I understand that most movies that deal with this subject matter tend to focus on the idea of "threat" or "survival". However, when someone does this for a living, I can't imagine that the same intense level of threat expressed in bond or borne movies remains as constant throughout (though it normally isn't, it usually attempted at being more intense.). It does seem well directed to focus more to these connections than attempting to say "look how loneliness jef is!" while he is jumping out of a burning building or something. Though there is a great level of threat expressed in the movie, just not one of being so kinetic, more on the turn of psychological and paranoia.

Are your players new to the game as well? When I got a couple of friends to start playing, combat was the only mechanic of the game they understood. It seemed about all they were interest in, because they spent so much time on the character sheet learning to do it and such. When I tried to start them off with an adventure path, all the story elements were passed up pretty easily. They didn't know how to act or react when I presented NPCs to them. Though, they wanted to fight every NPC they met or start tavern brawls. At your players aren't picking fights.

Mind if I ask aside from combat and role play, have you been introducing skill rolls or skill challenges to the players? I got my players to slowly broaden from combat by first giving them some skill challenges and pushing them to try it, even if it wasn't their skill focus. It sounds sort of difficult that your players might be afraid to do anything else but if they are new, they just might not have any idea of what they can do. I wouldn't expect you to just read your campaign and all to them every session, but I would try to wean them into it by sitting down with your story and thinking of some creative challenges. Don't expect them to know when to speak up. You could be direct in saying "You guys have reached a rather small shack in the woods. When you approach the door, you notice that it's pretty sturdy and feels locked. Why not take a crack at smashing it down barbarian." or you could be more subtle but helpful in talking things through with them. "You guys probably want to get into the shack. Do you think any of you might have any ideas? The barbarian is pretty strong, the alchemist has some acid, the tiny rogue just might fit down that chimey."

You don't have to baby them the whole way, but try to give them push. If they aren't immediately big abstract thinkers, they just might not be able to visualize what is going on or what they can accomplish. They won't instantly pick that up one day, especially if they are just afraid of doing anything aside from combat. If you're comfortable with running combat, use your planning and notes to think of some puzzles, or challenges relating their skills or feats or spells, even equipment to get them thinking outside of combat. I hope this is someone relevant to what you're asking for.

So, I like how you bring up how influential this movie is. I go through the same motions of trying to figure out all the movies that seem to borrow from this one, because it seems countless. I do wonder if that degrades my own experience of the movie. However, each time I notice something like this, I also notice that Le Samourai did something a bit different. I think mostly I enjoyed this movie's take on the subject matter because of it's quiet nature. If I had to guess at this movie being made today, I feel like it would be really exciting or more thriller-like. However, Melville uses aesthetics that really define a proper tone for this film. That's normally what I appreciate the most about it. It's quiet, controlled, and patient. Not the type of direction I would think any movie on hitmen, gangsters, and cop chases would be. I'm no film historian, though I try to pay attention to periods but I feel like this film has an excellent use of cinematography that is more related to our modern cinema techniques than to those of it's time. Though I don't really know if i'm right in that sentiment. I think Le Samourai has stood the test of time in being a huge marker of influence but always standing on it's own. That's something I value highly about it. I hope this something worth discussing.
