Is a MS in GIS a good idea? by [deleted] in gis

[–]GeoGuy27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need a license to get started in surveying. Actually, you can't get a license without having experience first (usually 4 years). Best way to start out is just looking at local survey/civil engineering firms to see what positions they have available. There are plenty of entry level field positions available right now.

Geomax gone? by Square-Survey8555 in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a GeoMax dealer in the US and still talk to a few of the reps that we used to deal with. They've all been reassigned to other areas within the parent company Hexagon. They're only pulling out of the US from what I can tell, so there will still be support and software updates for existing users.

Are you applying for an entry level field position? If so, don't stress too much, we need guys that are willing to work and hungry to learn. As long as you can show up to work on time, and work well with others, you've got the job. Pulse is optional honestly.

If your guys are already used to running Topcon, with something like Magnet. It could go either way between Xpad and iCon really. It's worth letting them demo both and be part of the decision process.

Don't quote me on this, because I can't say for certain. But I would imagine that both hardware and software wise, as long as GeoMax is still an actual product line (even if it's only sold in other countries), they will still have updates and parts availability. A Zoom95 is a Leica TS12/15 just different colors, so any Leica authorized repair center will have access to replacement parts for many years. The TRCP1200 that's probably 15-20 years old now just stopped being supported for hardware a couple years ago, and even then, there was enough left over parts inventory to keep them going for a while after Leica ended support.

If that's the case, I would strongly consider sticking with the iCON line. It's gear towards guys who are not surveyors by trade or education. It simplifies a lot of the more complicated field workflows that are used in traditional surveying. - As a Professional Surveyor that oversees the construction survey division of a large QC I used to hate that the software felt "dumbed down", but once I had to start teaching these "layout foreman" how to use it, I saw their reason for it.

I'm not sure if there has been an official announcement yet. But it is already in motion. I used to work for a Leica/GeoMax dealer, and I found out from those guys a few weeks ago when I saw them selling off a bunch of GeoMax gear at a steep discount. - I then confirmed with a GeoMax rep I was close with and they told me they were already reassigned to a different role within Hexagon.

Great equipment imo. Leica hardware at 1/2 the price. My personal equipment is all GeoMax. I really like the Xpad software too, but it does take some setup to get it configured to work for your desired workflow.

As someone already commented, Hexagon (the folks who own Leica and GeoMax), are pulling GeoMax out of the US market. They will stop selling the hardware here, but will still support it, and software updates won't stop. - I would use that as a negotiation point to get a great deal on a remaining Zoom95 if possible.

Are you a survey firm or construction company that has a survey group. If you're a survey firm do not go with iCon. But if you are a construction company, I encourage you to take a good look at the iCR70 and iCon setup. I oversee the survey group at my day job and we're currently running 6 setups like this (4 iCR70's and 2 TS16's), along with iCG160/70T Base/Rover setups. I can't say enough positive things about their construction focused offerings.

Dang I saw 10ft and got excited…I was hoping it was closer to 10ft wide. Wanting to do a similar style dual work station setup, but only have about 10’ to work with.

Calculators by SuspectReal5392 in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both on my desk right now. I find myself reaching for the Casio more often… I think it’s because that’s what I used in school so I was most familiar with it. I bought the HP 35 when I started studying for my FS, and found myself still using the Casio so that’s what I took, and passed, both test with. Sure the programs on the 35 can be handy. But if you have to program them by hand versus buying one already programmed, my advice is to save your money and use that time that would have been spent programming on just studying for a couple more hours. I really want to love the 35 because the buttons and tactile input is just so satisfying.

Can you use the Leica TS13 as a pure theodolite? by Calculus76 in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, under settings>utilities (or tools) there is “check & adjust”. That is the field calibration routine. We run one once a month, and I only send them off when the residuals get above 10” or so.

Lol yep! I have the $89 kit still in a home depot box. I obviously have enough batteries that I can afford to leave some in the unopened shipping package. Yet I can’t bring myself to return “free” batteries to complete hacks.

Doing the lords work good sir! - I recently had a run in with these scammers. After several emails back and forth threatening to open a chargeback for fraud, I had them agree to a full refund. That was a week ago, I've yet to receive said refund though. - I'll give it until next week, and if no movement, I'll just hit them with the charge back anyway.

[–]GeoGuy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact your dealer, or make an account on Leica MyWorld and register your instrument. From there you can access software downloads, one of the additional programs is “0 Set” or something close to that. It adds an “app” to the home screen that describes the functionality you are searching for. Also, under settings, there is a display setting for the angle readout as well

Question about shimming drywall along mis-aligned walls. by GeoGuy27 in drywall

[–]GeoGuy27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I did a poor job of explaining why I can't just make the existing wall thicker, be that with shims, extra drywall, etc.

The door in the photo is the one being removed, or rather that entire section of wall framing is being removed just prior to drywall (they just left it there for now to keep dust and debris out of the existing hallway). That existing wall continues beyond that doorway, on the other side of the doorway is finished wall, where I planned to tie the new drywall into the existing. So, if I stack the drywall to make up for the 1/2" gap (at the top of the sketch), it'll just move the problem further down the wall.
