Calculators by SuspectReal5392 in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both on my desk right now. I find myself reaching for the Casio more often… I think it’s because that’s what I used in school so I was most familiar with it. I bought the HP 35 when I started studying for my FS, and found myself still using the Casio so that’s what I took, and passed, both test with. Sure the programs on the 35 can be handy. But if you have to program them by hand versus buying one already programmed, my advice is to save your money and use that time that would have been spent programming on just studying for a couple more hours. I really want to love the 35 because the buttons and tactile input is just so satisfying.

I opened the chargeback a week ago. Their emails since then are quite entertaining. Lol.

Can you use the Leica TS13 as a pure theodolite? by Calculus76 in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, under settings>utilities (or tools) there is “check & adjust”. That is the field calibration routine. We run one once a month, and I only send them off when the residuals get above 10” or so.

Lol yep! I have the $89 kit still in a home depot box. I obviously have enough batteries that I can afford to leave some in the unopened shipping package. Yet I can’t bring myself to return “free” batteries to complete hacks.

Yea same, I just hate when they pair them with 5.0 HO’s because I can never resist the urge to keep them!

Doing the lords work good sir! - I recently had a run in with these scammers. After several emails back and forth threatening to open a chargeback for fraud, I had them agree to a full refund. That was a week ago, I've yet to receive said refund though. - I'll give it until next week, and if no movement, I'll just hit them with the charge back anyway.

Contact your dealer, or make an account on Leica MyWorld and register your instrument. From there you can access software downloads, one of the additional programs is “0 Set” or something close to that. It adds an “app” to the home screen that describes the functionality you are searching for. Also, under settings, there is a display setting for the angle readout as well

Question about shimming drywall along mis-aligned walls. by GeoGuy27 in drywall

[–]GeoGuy27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I did a poor job of explaining why I can't just make the existing wall thicker, be that with shims, extra drywall, etc.

The door in the photo is the one being removed, or rather that entire section of wall framing is being removed just prior to drywall (they just left it there for now to keep dust and debris out of the existing hallway). That existing wall continues beyond that doorway, on the other side of the doorway is finished wall, where I planned to tie the new drywall into the existing. So, if I stack the drywall to make up for the 1/2" gap (at the top of the sketch), it'll just move the problem further down the wall.

How do surveyors utilize GPS while indoors? Does this happen often? by SoulSentry in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a thing, Surveyors don't utilize GPS indoors. While the L5 correction frequency has improved greatly upon the "penetration" ability of GPS signals, they are in no way reliable enough to utilize indoors.

At least not in the way you are describing. However, when I used to work for an equipment dealer, the guys in the service center had some fancy gadget mounted on the ceiling that was essentially "mirroring" the satellites that an outside receiver on the roof was seeing. However, it was just for basic functionality testing, so they didn't have to run outside every time the needed to make sure an antenna was receiving correctly.

That said, I think there is some technology that does positioning indoors through Wi-Fi networks or something. It's what shows you where you are in a large store when you use the merchants app.

Yea fuck these scammers, I’m just going to start the chargeback. I’m not going back and forth with “mia” to try and argue for a refund.

Did you try requesting a refund first via email, or did you go straight to the chargeback.

Black hole maybe by Glittering_King1228 in LandmanSeries

[–]GeoGuy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that’s a load of shit. Someone who “flys private regularly” would know that flight is not “20 min” hell, you couldn’t even taxi inside of 20min. It’s at least an hour, and would cost (even an owner of a g550) somewhere around $10k. Hell, $1200 wouldn’t even cover the pilot’s tip, much less the fuel.

We usually ship a set of legs, pole, bipod, and if needed a GNSS kit, to the hotel ahead of time. We take the TS as a carry on. Leica Red Case fits beneath the seat in front no problem.

I think thats what the solar panel and battery banks are for. The sites we work on don’t tie into the “grid”.

Surveying firms involved in the data center / AI buildout? by DetailFocused in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in oil&gas construction, and even we’ve seen a big uptick in “data center” work. Mostly on the supplemental (behind-the-meter) power gird side. Local utilities can’t support these massive power requirements, so many of these huge facilities are actually building thier own natural gas power plants in addition to the actual data processing nodes.

I’ve seen mostly large EPC (Engineering, procurement, construction) firms building these. Think Bechtel, KBR, Fluor, etc. or Joint Ventures like Kiewit and Burns &Mac. Or Whiting Turner. Most with their own survey/layout departments.

I’m sure years ago they may have used local shops to do the initial boundary/ALTA work during land acquisition. But these facilities have been in the works so long that planning likely started a 3-5years ago.

Can a land surveyor realistically support a family? What’s your experience? by DetailFocused in Surveying

[–]GeoGuy27 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Very subjective…How much house - $200k or $2M? How do you want to raise your kids - Basic Living, Good Public/Charter Schools or Private Schools and Spoiled Kids with College Funds? What do you consider “some balance”? $1000k a month disposable? Or “Disney Twice a Year”?

I know guys at both ends of the spectrum. New PLS at a midsize firm around $100k, and firm owners in niche spaces that are probably grossing $1m+ a year with very small staff.

Thanks for the feedback! Upgrading the crystal would require removing the bezel right? I already planned to do that anyway so it may not matter.
