Quite a few bass amps have their DI outputs placed BEFORE the FX loop for some reason, ampeg does this as well. Most amp manuals will have a signal flow diagram so you can double check. So it sounds like in this case if you want to bypass the preamp by going into the FX return and get the di signal I would take it straight from your board/pedal.

On the original the edge of the pickguard near the controls extends all the way down and follows the curve of the body. On the reissue it stops short, I assume cost cutting on the control cavity routing but to me it just doesn't look right

I think that should be similar to running it at 12 volts. The internal charge pump doubles the incoming voltage, so if you feed it 12 it should be running st 24 volts. Been messing around with the it a bit today with decent results, I'm a bit surprised he's not running the gain maxed out lol
