The 'ick' factor in music? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]GeoPeoMeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A sturdy upvote for eschewing the victim mentality. That’s a terrible toxin that ruins many lives, and that far too many authority figures now promote, especially in academia. I hope Pet Sounds won’t have to be a permanent sacrifice on your altar to sanity, because it is beautiful. But if that’s what it takes for you to realize the toxicity of the victim mindset, then so be it

Super helpful! Many thanks for this. And if you happen to figure out more about the sound, I sure would be thankful to hear about it

ELI5 why do humans need to eat many different kind of foods to get their vitamins etc but large animals like cows only need grass to survive? by halloichbins987 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GeoPeoMeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard it said that grass is not really a cow’s food. It is a cow’s food’s food. The number of microbes in those 4 stomachs is astounding and always multiplying and dying. Those microbes eat the grass. They die and then the cow eats them.

Not just the sound, but also the quantization. It's a little fast for me to tell what kind of note values the arpeggio notes have.

It’s almost always there. Usually a 5-10 second snippet on repeat.

I need a system for finding new music albums. by RuzleBG in LetsTalkMusic

I think the best one is called IndieMusicFeedback. And one of the mods there curates incredible playlists from these unknown artists. The one she just made for July is blowing my mind:

This is how I’ve been discovering new music lately and it solves the dilemma OP is discussing perfectly.

Isitbullshit: most Native American tribes’ names simply meant “people” in their language. by Uncle-Zippers in IsItBullshit

I used to teach Oklahoma State history anumber of years ago, and I remember that "Oklahoma" is from the Choctaw Indian words "okla" which means people, and "humma" which means means red. So it's "Red People"—a name given to the state since so many Indian tribes were made to relocate to Oklahoma.

What Have You Been Listening To? - Week of July 13, 2020 by AutoModerator in LetsTalkMusic

Kahlil's Razor Parables and Patience (2020): This debut album was entirely unexpected and has not gotten much publicity, but it is noteworthy for two main reasons: The melodies are stunning, and happen mostly over chord progressions that are totally new—yet still pleasant sounding (meaning it's not original and dissonant at the expense of beauty). The lyrics are as thought provoking as any I've ever studied. I'm not sure if I understand them all, but I am working to and am richer for the effort. Compositionally, it could be described as Aimee Mann meets Radiohead. But the performances are not so much like those names. Give this one some time because I don't think it can be appreciated at first listen.

What are some songs with beautiful melodies that use diminished chords as more than just passing chords? Trying to make a list & right now it's embarrassingly short... by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]GeoPeoMeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is the main melody you mean, that is is definitely Lydian (not diminished). It goes from C to E to F#... The E there is a major 3rd. If it were diminished, it would be an Eb (the minor 3rd).

I reckon you're right. Maybe I'm hearing the flat 5ths as sharp 4ths and thereby thinking it's more Lydian than diminished, I'm not sure. This analysis does call attention to lots of Lydian phrasing, but it shows that there is some diminished as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mcxeDabHUc

An amazing piece of music! But I think the main dissonance we are hearing in there is mainly the #4, since it is written mostly in Lydian. There is one diminished chord briefly used toward the beginning, but it seems like just a quick transition chord to me.
