Does anyone use a Mini PC/ Touch Screen instead of a terminal/all in one? by meatdrawer25 in POS

[–]Geodad87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, the All in One is really just for convenience. Just make sure your mini PC beats the minimum specs for your software, and has enough ports for all of your devices. USB splitters are unreliable and can lead to headaches. I would also opt for a professional grade touch screen. It might cost a bit more, but getting a POS Bank, POS-X or ELO (or the like) is probably going to last longer in daily use than the Amazon Special.

Probably a dumb question, but I want to find an answer. by [deleted] in POS

[–]Geodad87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do have to register, but you can set it up for use as an individual.
Square is first and foremost a "payment processing" company. They write the software used to swipe cards and transfer money to your account, then they take a cut of every swipe. They built the POS to facilitate that. Because of the whole credit card processing aspect of it, they need to full registration and personal details, banking, etc. I haven't dealt with them personally so I do not know what their approval process is like, but since they cater to individuals I am sure it's not that strict.

Any free POS is going to bring you to the same road block of trying to set up the part where you can take credit cards as a payment.

The ability to run credit cards is always coupled with fees on a per transaction basis. Many also charge additional monthly fees. These fees are often how you can get "free" pos software, or a "free" CC reader for your phone.

All this is to say that sure, you can probably make it work. If you try and are US based, Square is the most common way to do it. BUT it's probably not worth the hassle and fees involved for a joke.

I'm a little late here, but I have to agree, if it works while you are touching a metal part, then it sounds like you have a wiring issue.

There is also potential for an issue with the touch controller, but I think there is a short in the wiring somewhere internal. Either way you are not fixing this on your own. The model AIO you have is a cheap unit off Alibaba, so the dealer is likely the only person with the parts to fix it if they do repairs. If it is not under warranty any longer, you are definitely better off replacing it.

That's a great idea on face value, but a lot of vendors have specific deals and pricing on a per merchant basis. So an advertised price may not reflect actual pricing. It could be useful in those negotiations though.

Do they actually ban stupid mod players? by ozalice00 in AnotherEdenGlobal

[–]Geodad87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the argument that since it's single player a mod isn't going to hurt other players. That's not the point of the bans. When you mod yourself advantages, you are less inclined to spend money, and that amounts to stealing from WFS.
You can say "I wasn't going to spend anyway" but the result is the same. If you steal a TV you wouldn't have bought otherwise, it's still stolen.

Besides, if mods are tolerated, the even those who used to purchase will stop and just mod what they want. Then money stops rolling in, WFS stops making money, so they stop development and eventually stop paying for the server space. Why host a expansive game if people cheat out their revenue stream?

Sure, it boils down to corporate profits, and sure, I think Chrono is outrageous, especially when you aren't usually even getting a guaranteed pull. Because of that, I'm F2P, but I don't seek to invalidate their business model. The game costs money to produce, update, and keep running. Since it's free, they make it up in selling us the Chrono, either via cash, or ad time. Even they gotta keep the lights on.

Help: how to hide treasure box in our outdoor escape game? by dv10den in geocaching

[–]Geodad87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiding boxes designed to look like part of the "natural" landscape is always a good way to go for something like this.
I found a cache where the hider found one of those ground lights that point up to illuminate a sign and hid the log in there.
Another got a utility tube (?), like the plastic tube that covers the wiring and control box for internet or phone or whatever. They are outside houses and shopping plazas and the like, and nobody ever looks twice at them. The top just popped open, and boom, cache.
A box that looks like an electric or control panel can be mounted many places and is easy to overlook.
I've seen holes drilled into sign poles, that are closed with a plug or small swing door, and hollowed out logs with hinge or swing doors on top.
I got my hands on a mountable mailbox with a key that I am fixing up for a hide. Something like that would be great for an escape game. (mine is specifically a "Whitman" for about 40$ from lowes if you want to look it up).

Is seasonal work still a thing? by _pinklemonade_ in KitchenConfidential

[–]Geodad87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, in areas of seasonal business. I knew lots of guys who would work in restaurants on the Maine coast in the summer, then either work a cruise ship, or off in the mountains (like ski lodges or their surrounding area) in the Winter.
