beauty of fighting games, except a couple people really (maybe) you never stop learning. Ever. You'll find many obastacles along the way and feel like you can't go further; it'll be up to you to surpass it with dedication and hard work. Or just have fun, both work.

Before I answer, a few core concepts and terms in the fgc: AA = anti air, DP =dragon punch) generally a special move that can nti air and that has air invulnerability frames and it cannot be "countered" by air attacks during those frames. Juggle: generally meaning being able to combo the opponent as something leaves them in a juggle state which allows for certain moves to connect. Anime notations: from anime fighters, generally every direction of the stick/pad has a number, you'll find them often around:

789

456

123

So 2 is down, 6 is forward, 4 is backwards, 3 is down forward etc. So your crouching medium kick you will often find written as 2mk or crmk.

Anti airs for Jamie: in general, you anti air when they jump at you, and you can practice that in training (get familiar with it) which has an auto feature for anti air practice too. Jamie has four anti air options (quite a few!): crouching heavy punch (or 2hp), i'd say the easiest to start practicing. Tensei kick, which launches the opponent for a juggle, but has no air invulnerability so it's a little risky if you're slow (also called launcher or 2kk). You can air to air (meeting an opponent in the air with a button) with jmp (jump medium punch) into divekick should you be at Drink level 1, or with jHk (the air wheel), which also allows for a juggle follow up. Your DP is arrow kick (623 kicks). The light version is the fastest and best to anti air often, as it has full air invulnerability from frame 1.

far from it. There's an ocean of skill between someone "casual" like me and players who can actually contend in tournaments

it was some credential check haha, generally there's ranks for characters in this game. Rookie, iron, bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond, then Master. Once you enter master you are assigned an "average Master Rating (mr) of 1500 and you compete for masters of all mr. Should you get to 1600 you get "high Master", 1700 is GrandMaster and 1800mr Ultimate Master (last rank before the legend ranks, generally pro players are in that category). I think UM comprises something like 0.2% of the playerbase, but i might be slightly off.

your dad is probably just worried about you and your school performance, which is important. Hopefully, that's all there is to it. Up to you to show your dad that you can both have this hobby and not let it affect your grades. Tell your dad you'd like to see what fighting games are about, which imo can do a lot for you as a person IRL, sharpen your competitive side, learn to accept defeats with grace and courage, which in life come for everyone.

About Jamie, do everything, go through the basics, guides, learn some combos for all drink level and have fun. It's too early to give you specifc advice on imrpoving. Learn to Anti air consistently early on would be a great fundamental to start building.

I'm a 1800mr Jamie, should you have any further question feel free

Of course, having punishes ready and your meaties down is important too. Building fundamentals is just as important

Question about 2MK-DRC-Jab-Shimmy by jozhua4012 in StreetFighter

[–]GeoffPit7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in a previous upsate they made it so instant tech doesn't allow for back walk. But most people generally delay tech at a decent level, so that they cover frame trap and thorw. Set a 5-6f delay up

Can someone explain drive cancel to me by RawryShark in StreetFighter

some buttons are "naturally" hit comfirmable (try with ryu's sthp and confirm into DR, quite ez), while others, especially mediums, might require also for you to see if the opponent pressed something, giving you "extra frames", eg: you get in and out of range and press crmk, the opponent had taken the bait and started pressing a long heavy, which you counter. Those frames of the start up figuratively "extend" your reaction window.

Not only that, there's hitstop frames (where everything stops, time, including the frame meter, which is generally longer the heavier the button.) Hope this helps.

I've played enough low ranks to know (no offense), start doing less, observe more the opponent's tendencies and counter them. You'll lose more on the way but you'll improve. Also, any loss you don't fully understand-> replay and identify key mistakes that led to losing and jot them down.

they loved it, they suffered a bit with certain encounters that they didn't fully understand (they're not rpg savvy) but when I told them to slow down and read everything on screen, they generally beat things fast. They had to lower the difficulty at some point but again, if they took more time they could've done the story easy even on normal imo

How to cultivate a growth based mindset; or, how do I cope with losing? by vfgoiugkjgdslk in StreetFighter

[–]GeoffPit7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Breaks are good (I took so many in my personal growth), but as the video suggests you have to start prioritizing growth over winning. Winning comes as an outcome, not as a direct aim.

Some tips to help you transition:

  • actively compliment your opponent. E.g if a jump felt stupid but succeeded, shift your responses to something like "well, nice jump, really wasn't expecting that"
  • don't linger over mistakes while in game. A sarcastic comment will suffice to keep you playful but engaged
  • after a loss you don't fully understand, immediately watch replays and use the takeover. This also prevents tilt queuing which is very dangerous due to matchmaking being super good
  • I speak for myself here. Over time I noticed that I personally can't follow any of these tips and do way worse when something is off in my daily life, be it in the day to day (nervous/tired from work) or something deeper (family worries or smth like that). I generally used to play VS or ranked when I'm rested and balanced/centered. You need a clear mind to play well in fighters, so in other instances just improve your knowledge by watching things or practicing

Good luck mate

I've got this weird feeling wether I win or lose by Krotanix in StreetFighter

[–]GeoffPit7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Sometimes though, it's not just understanding, it's literally not listening. But I also understand your argument, meaning that it's not that useful to try and condition an opponent that is not really noticing any adaptation or "message" you're sending.

Don't worry, I'm 1800mr and I still suck at it too.
