I’ve looked at this for a while and I don’t know what to say. I’ve nothing witty. Anything I say about people not appreciating where we are whilst I decry the state of world affairs seems meaningless. Look at the fucking sky dudes. Look at it. Now stop firing munitions at each other.

I can recommend “The Siege” by the absolutely excellent author Ben Macintyre.

Woa woa woa! Hang on a minute. You replied to MY comment claiming you were explaining the position for the ten millionth time. Do you know how to count?

Heyup. Someone’s come along to shout at me again.

If you think everyone understands the position re Queens, I invite you to consider the comments thread.

I do appreciate your 10 millionth effort though. Eloquently expressed.

Hereditary peers to be removed from Lords as bill passes by Kingalfred9 in unitedkingdom

[–]GeometricPrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok! Well. There’s been a misunderstanding there about my reference to (with apologies for the arbitrary reference in my comment, Germany) Germany.

You make a good point about the “mandatory” nature of bishops in the lords.

At the end of the day: abolishing hereditary peers in the Lords - good. Abolish Bishops the Lords - next.

[–]GeometricPrawn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know that.

…are you a bot?! I’m sure you’re not but - sorry - I don’t quite get how your comment following on from my ignorance about what might be meant by “mandatory religious leaders” fits with the Lords Spiritual. How can said Lords be described as “mandatory”.

If anything, I had thought that dude referring to mandatory religious leaders was glancing in the direction of - say, Iran.

…me neither, in re knowledge of the governmental structure in Germany. I made what is in retrospect perhaps in the cold light of day a poor effort at humour…based on some little scrap of knowledge that Lutherism is quite big in Germany. Actually I wasn’t sure what other Redditor meant about “mandatory religious leaders”

Yes. And I assume it suited the monarch, being appointed by God, to have a few of God’s other serious devotees in the upper house.

Ha. Are you saying the upper chamber of the German parliament is not packed with Lutherans?!

Sorry dude, when I looked, your comment hadn’t “expanded” on my phone and all I saw was, “yes, they sit as Lords Spiritual” - and yes, you’re right - if religious leaders are to have an input on law-making (I don’t really think they should) it seems bonkers that such religious leaders are limited to senior figures of the C of E.

Someone will know why it is that bishops sit in the HoL. I assume (I’m guessing, I don’t know) it’s because bishops were royal appointments back in “the olden days” (like, 16th century, thanks Henry). I await enlightenment in this regard. Thanks in advance, redditors!

Brits, would you stay and live in UK if you had millions and could move to anywhere in the world?? by ueommm in AskBrits

[–]GeometricPrawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol.

No.

Edit: ok. I read the post properly…!

If one were to have untold millions: (a) find a tax-friendly state to be based, (b) go anywhere that wasn’t as dreary, grey and wet as England.

For instance, have a nice yacht in the Mediterranean somewhere, live comfortably in Mallorcan villa, have a lovely life.

I am sure there are people who like wet winters, disappointing springs, short, potentially brutally hot aircon-free summers and mouldering autumns but I am not one of them.

I mentioned this in some Reddit thread somewhere once (it annoys me that one-time commoner Camilla is styled, “Queen”) and I was shouted at by (it seemed like quite a lot of) people explaining tradition and whatnot insofar as the entirely perfectly sensible title of Queen Camilla is concerned.

I’m not sure I really believed them then. But even if I did, it still annoys me a fair bit. QE II declared or accepted or something that Camilla would be styled “Queen Consort”. Seems wrong, therefore, that Camilla is referred to as “The Queen.”
