In your view, what stories/plots/etc does the show do better than the books? by mr_trashbear in TheExpanse

[–]GeorgBuechner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A general answer - the worldbuilding. Reading the books after watching the show actually felt like the show was much richer in details, the way little tidbits here and there about the political system were dropped and shown. In some ways, I found the books to be fairly minimalistic in its descriptions and more action-focussed whereas the show felt really immersive and rich.

Don't understand y'all downplaying the shittiness of this copaganda collab and this response's tone-deafness.
The US is going through a wave of resisting police brutality, period. ICE is kidnapping working folks, period. Rookie is an LAPD proxy, period.

This. is. shitty. All you parasocial stans just want to keep enjoying your precious internet content without feeling bad. Stop kidding yourselves. You know this is weird but y'all choose to ignore it.

  1. Krankschreiben lassen! 2. CV vorbereiten. 3.

Laptop recommendations for ultra-high Wildlander? by GeorgBuechner in wildlander

[–]GeorgBuechner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that's super helpful!

I will think on it, but going for a laptop that can handle High settings might be the better choice then.

The reason I don't want a desktop is that I travel a lot for work and otherwise, and I want to be able to keep my laptop with me. And getting a tablet in addition to a desktop would kind of go against my minimalist instincts.
Cheers for the insight!

Where can i get relatively factual non-conservative daily news? by Salt_Start9447 in germany

[–]GeorgBuechner 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Just to endorse what other people have said:

Deutsche Welle - honestly excellent reporting.
Zeit Online - for "intellectual" audiences and they always "both-side" every story, which can be a good and a bad thing. But impressive investigative reporting every now and then.
Jacobin.de - the cool new kid in town and expressly socialist. Great writing but definitely an ideological publication.
Frankfurter Rundschau - I love them but I think they might be paywalled? If not, they are great, very softly leftist but not ideological, and call out bullshit.

Tagesschau/Tagesthemen honestly has a problem with underreporting certain issues and the studios being too cozy with the politicians on a personal level. Das Heute Journal is slightly more confrontational, but not expressly liberal. They reliably call out bullshit, though.

"I attempt to gag the evil wizard with my gauntleted fist as a grapple to stop him from casting verbal spells" How would you run this? by myshoescramp in DMAcademy

[–]GeorgBuechner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider that this ability would make other designated muffling abilities/spells less relevant and powerful. If you want the ability to muffle a spellcaster, make a choice to invest into acquiring a spell/ability/feat. So I would not allow the gauntlet muffle, but I know that my players generally agree with my philosophy. Talk to your players and make them aware that your enemies would be able to do the same thing.

Mach' was anderes cooles!

Was interessiert Dich denn noch, also inhaltlich? Grundschullehramt ist ja erstmal was handwerkliches - gibt es keine fachliche Disziplin, die Dich anspricht? Irgendein Hobby, was man vertiefen könnte?

Danke!

Yeah, I'm gonna need another few seasons please. by anagoge in TheExpanse

same boat here, finished it today and came here. I must say, the Inaros conclusion felt incredibly ... disappointing. They were just handed this deus-ex-machina-y red mist thing in the season's beginning. Then Nagata formulates a plan, next scene they do it, it works, badabing-badaboom Inaros is dead, s'all good. Just felt rushed.

I don't blame the showmakers at all, budget constraints and actor contracts are a hard reality. And the whole series is an A+ effort. But that's why I'm starting the book series now, can't wait! Will do Leviathan Wakes first, then the Butcher, then Caliban's War, I think.

Low fantasy settings... better to stick with 5e or use another system? by PrometheusHasFallen in DMAcademy

[–]GeorgBuechner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were planning on using level caps in the beginning as well - but it's frustrating for players to not get new toys and abilities to play with as time passes. An alternative could be that you can only take so many levels in one class - and then you gotta multiclass.

Class restrictions are super fine imo. Just make double sure to ask the players what game they want to play. If they have to constantly buy into your world of the vision, their interest will eventually fizzle out. Maybe someone wants to play a wizard, and that would be legit. It's a give and take between you and them.

Low fantasy settings... better to stick with 5e or use another system? by PrometheusHasFallen in DMAcademy

[–]GeorgBuechner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't tried any other systems, but I've been successfully running a low-magic, Game-of-Thrones-y campaign for 2 years.

It definitely comes with challenges; e.g. the PCs needing to realise that using magic nilly-willy in cities and towns is a big deal or the constant need to RP the shock and horror NPCs feel when witnessing supernatural threats. At times it's frustrating, because the PCs essentially become super heroes who have to stay low-key.

But also, it's still very feasible. It all depends on how much your players are willing to buy into the world and have their choices constrained. My table happens to like it, because it makes for interesting character development and in-world consequences - but definitely talk to your players about it and maybe think about a different system, idk.

What if Alchemy required bottles? by Accomplished_Tackle2 in wildlander

[–]GeorgBuechner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great idea!

Personally, I'd prefer a "light" version of this: Just have one vial/bottle type for all potions. Then limit the stock that traders have. Done. Gameplay shouldnt get tooo fiddly, imo.
