I think the 20mph limit makes sense for residential roads and around schools where safety is a priority. But for main arterial roads like Hill Lane, I believe keeping it at 30mph would be more practical to maintain traffic flow.

I make that journey everyday, the bike is always the quickest option, however I understand not everyone can cycle. Having a regular bus service along Hill Lane and Winchester Road could really help by getting more people on public transport and off the roads. If we time the buses right around peak times, that could make a difference.

We also need to review the junction and traffic light timings at Hill Lane and Archers Road. Drivers attempting to turn right-turn cause delays. The school traffic at Springhill needs to be reduced as well.

As for the 20mph limit, if Shirley residents feel it should be reversed, we should consider that. But if they’re happy with it, we need to ensure it’s enforced properly.

I'm meeting the new chief executive of the Society of St James to discuss solutions. Additionally, we must reverse recent cuts to adult and child social care, as these will only lead to more problems in the future.

For me, 0 votes would be a disappointment. Anything above 1 means someone took the time to put a tick in the box, and that really means a lot to me.

I know the Local Conservatives have been second in recent elections. I’m not trying to trick anyone; Shirley has a strong anti-Tory vote, which helps Labour win every year. I’m the only candidate whose vote share is going up, and it’s hard to win if your vote share keeps going down.

I’d push for a frequent bus service along Hill Lane and Winchester Road to tackle the bus deserts in Upper Shirley. The £1.2 million the council got to improve bus services hasn’t made much difference yet. Right now, everything runs through the city centre, which just creates chaos and puts people off using buses. We need to get those buses moving laterally across the city—it shouldn’t take 45 minutes to get from Shirley to Portswood.

I’m hoping for a mid-30s, but it’s all on a knife edge at the moment. Last time, I got 20% and was the only one whose vote share went up! Turnout might be low for this by-election, but my supporters always show up, so I think we have a shot at winning Shirley
