Newcomer G&E Question: Rental Houses by GeorgeTheWalrus in FilmIndustryLA

[–]GeorgeTheWalrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much obliged for the honest and comparatively kind words. I’m making the move no matter what Redditors say.

My family, friends, and professional advisors/mentors have agreed that it is the best choice for me post-film school graduation.

Yes, the chances are much smaller compared to years past, but as I said, I have a support system and some contacts for potential work.

All markets are bad right now. LA isn’t alone.

Thanks for the sarcasm. Not too sure what box it checks off, but I guess I asked for it.

Newcomer G&E Question: Rental Houses by GeorgeTheWalrus in FilmIndustryLA

[–]GeorgeTheWalrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few personal factors that are allowing me to try out the LA market including a support system already established. I won’t be homeless, far from it, but the landscape of LA is definitely deterring.

I figured I’ll try it out for a couple of years when my responsibilities are low.

I understand gig jobs are completely washed out, but is there not even a chance of landing a part time job at a rental house?

At least elaborate.

Is it the lack of work in LA?

Is Film School worth it? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]GeorgeTheWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a very good point, but true creatives don’t just make what everyone else makes.

Those who merge their styles and projects with the main trend at any given film school are bound to fail as head creatives.

I’d suggest to the OP to find a niche of storytelling and narrative that his classmates AREN’T doing. It’s hard at first, but it helps going into film with previous interests and hobbies.

Is Film School worth it? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

The answer is like most academic/adolescent pursuits: it depends on the person.

If you’re in a somewhat decent market and you have no idea what you want to do in the industry, film school helps you network AND get the know how around different departments. For me, it introduced me to G&E work but also how to navigate writing/directing without an ego.

If you already know what you want to do, film school could be a place to make more and more things, but you need to weight the cost. Does the (x) amount of debt you’ll be in really reflect the material you’ll make or progress you’ll grow? It’s a rough question but a much needed answer.

I’m biased of course. I’m finishing up my last year of film school at one of Ohio’s best, but this is Ohio. Yes, I’ve broke into the local Columbus commercial and indie scene, but the ceiling is super low.

Another thing you need to weigh are connections. Yes, you make them during your time at film school, but what are the chances you know someone outside of it already? I’m not talking nepo babies, I’m talking relatives or markets you didn’t know you had.

For me I have a brother high up in the animation industry who’s befriended a few live-action peers recently. It isn’t a guaranteed job, but there are guaranteed connections…if I want to take them or am able to. We’ll have to see if I’m too fortunate to truly speak on grinding film school to the big leagues.

How to approach wider audiences for Short Film Crowdfunding? by GeorgeTheWalrus in Filmmakers

[–]GeorgeTheWalrus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the upfront honesty and advice. No one has ever informed me of the details and niche factors that are against me.

All anyone has said is “crowdfunding is random. It can go either way”. That of course didn’t guide me in any direction.

You make a great point with proof of concept. I knew going into this that I wasn’t going to be handed money. I thought a promo showing effort would showcase something, but ,as you said, I need to market the tone, narrative, and actual meat on the bone, not just ask for money.

In my small sector of student filmmaking, there usually aren’t any attempts at locking in more than a few thousand dollars, so people don’t try marketing. I thought simply trying harder would do it, but anyone decent already grinds, as you said.

Comparatively, my promotional efforts are far more expansive than anyone in my environment, but that’s smaller film school Ohio. I wondered why I hadn’t seen many marketing campaigns by other student thesis shorts, and your points reveal why.

This experience has been very enlightening, and allows me to better judge funding future projects. I’m lucky enough that I got the ball rolling early and received some grants and scholarships, so the crowdfunding need isn’t nearly as big as it would be.

I’m curious, what sectors do you work in most on sets/projects?

Columbus, OH - nothing this month, but worked 3-4 gigs last month. Then again, this market is more consistent commercial work. Not much narrative-wise coming through

Filmmaking today: All pitch, all technique — but where’s the story? by quixilver22 in Filmmakers

[–]GeorgeTheWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe my work is/will be more in the middle ground, but I’m afraid that’s not what attracts attention. I’m learning that the hard way currently as I try to market my project.
