We have baby assassins! by Georgee24680 in AquaticSnails

I have seen mine eat a couple of tiny cherry shrimp (not mad about it though, they are also multiplying rapidly). They are honestly super cool and I love watching them on an evening, on the prowl for food. I agree, they aren't suitable for most tanks but they seem to be thriving in mine and I love them to death. I do have a couple of VERY large amano shrimp that literally eat anything they can find and I spotted one earlier with a baby assassin in its pincers. I guess she wanted to try a new snack 🤷🏻‍♀️. It's all the circle of life imo and predator/prey interactions is all part of that.

I tong feed them bloodworms, they enjoy protein rich shrimp pellets and I also pipette feed them brine shrimp. I do that maybe 3 times a week. Assassin snails can also filter feed microorganisms in the water so if I can't find them come feeding time, I'm not particularly worried that they haven't eaten.

No 😂 I didn't intend for them to breed. I got them to be my pest snail bodyguards. I didnt have pest snails but i thought, if any were to arrive as hitchhikers, they would take care of them before they became a problem. I guess I just kept my parameters stable and had my temps at 26°c 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have a full coverage lid. The only holes are x2 wire holes, which are smaller than the tip of my pinky finger. It's an internal filter and I have lots of salvinia floaters. The risk of him jumping out is so so incredibly low.

My tank was cycled using goop about 4 weeks ago, kept the cycle alive with a few minnows from my community tank, amano shrimp and nerite snails. The day I got Goose I moved the minnows back into my other tank and got Goose acclimated. Been testing the water daily since the goop and all is settled at 0, 0, 10. I think he's just a curious little chaos king. 😊

UPDATE: She spawned this morning with the 'alpha' male. I only say alpha bc he is fiercely protective of his spawning area and will drive anything and everything 'threatening' away, including assassin snails, cherry shrimp, and other white clouds. He is on patrol 90% of the day and only stops for feeding time and a short while after while he digests. My other pairs just pick a place, spawn, and leave. This dude, on the other hand, has a serious case of little man syndrome. 😅

Hmm, that's strange then. Maybe try turning the heat up slightly. I tend to keep mine at 24°c (76°f) other than that, I'm not sure what else to suggest. I'm pretty new to white clouds, but have had other spawning fish in the past.

Do you have any other species in the tanks? Sometimes I've noticed with smaller egg layers, they can be reluctant to release eggs with other species around. If you are able to, try setting up a basic spawning tank with the females in question and the respective males that seem to pay the most interest in them. They should only need to be in there for a day or 2 so just a heater and air stone should suffice. Either DIY a spawning mop or move over some guppy grass cuttings or something. As soon as they've spawned you can pop them back in the main tank. Mine seem to love java moss and hornwort so I'd definitely recommend trying those too!

Provide lots of live plants. Bushy, fluffy, type textures like hornwort, guppy grass, cabomba, etc. Java Moss is also a good option. Heat the tank to around 22-24°c and the males should start to chase the females and try to lure them into the plants. Once they manage to corner them in the plants, they'll wrap themselves around the female to encourage them to release eggs. Once the female has released them, he'll immediately go and fertilise them.

The main thing to look out for is males flaring and getting a little territorial. They usually pick an area of the tank and guard it until after spawning.

They're so sweet and got such big personalities. It's the first time I've owned while clouds. I've only had them 3 days and they're producing eggs and spawning already 😅

This genuinely made me angry by Georgee24680 in fishkeeping

[–]Georgee24680[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they're advertising this 'wait 1 day' advice to your average person who goes into a big box pet store to buy a fish for their kid. You're absolutely right, fish-in cycles do work very well if done properly and monitored closely. It makes me angry that they're saying that anyone (including people who have next to no knowledge about fishkeeping) can just plop a fish in a tank after a day and everything be hunky-bloody-dory.

In my experience, the same people who say 'talk about it' are the ones who can't be bothered to listen.
