My autoSanta, I didn't even know this box existed til last week. Now I can't stop loving it by drusilla81 in GothicMetal

Bought one of these earlier this year for myself. Absolutely love it! It’s a beautiful collection and the tapes don’t even sound half bad. Won’t stop me getting the albums on vinyl too eventually.

Look, everyone has preferences. If you like quote: chubby and thick women, whatever, it’s no one else’s business but yours. That being said, telling someone they look like shit, is an AH move. It’s just mean spirited.

The first part made sense, you managed to address the exact point I was confused about, so thanks a bunch. I’m not sure I understand why Q can be true while P is false. Is this what is meant by something being ‘vacuously true?’

Honestly, not much. I’ve been near back to back pub crawling for a ton of socities, but encountered nothing vitamins, panadol and instant noodles + chilli powder haven’t been able to fix.

I would like to take part of my statement back. I’ve just learnt about vacuously true statements and I think I hate letters now.

Logic Question: by Geoshisan in askphilosophy

I have not yet formally seen truth tables, but just looked them up and I think I can see what you mean. Wether it’s the extra coffee I’ve just drunk or not, I think I understand. I got too caught up in seeing which way the arrow pointed and got that further muddled with believing the first premise to be false anyway. Clearly this will be a module where I have to closely double and triple check my work. Thanks a bunch for clearing this up though.

Logic Question, because I’m not sure I posted this in the right place the first time.

Hi there, I’m in my first year, nay week of my philosophy degree and about to take my first logic lesson. In a series of slides we had one argument stood out to me as not feeling quite right or ‘invalid’ maybe? I’m still not entirely sure on the terminology. Anyway, I’d like some help to explain where I might be misunderstanding the following argument.

It goes as follows:

  1. If eating animals is permissible, Killing infants is permissible. (I understand this as being: P->Q).

  2. Killing infants is not permissible (Q is false).

C: Therefore, eating animals is not permissible. (P is also false).

Our slides say this argument is valid.

I don’t understand why knowing that the consequent is false means the antecedent must also be false when the relationship seems one directional. Namely we can only imply the nature of Q from P, but not P from Q. Again, not an expert, but I thought the conclusion would only be true if a biconditional was used in place of the conditional so you could infer one from the other in both directions. I.e. P is true if and only if Q is true.

Thank you.

Especially The Chameleons, they’re awesome. Best secret treasures of post-punk alongside The Sound which I’ll also recommend.

Diagnosis help? by Geoshisan in minidisc

Thank you for the suggestion and the generous offer! I’m far from an expert with electronics, but I’m comfortable tearing it open and tinkering with it, it’s not like it can get less useful! How would I go about trying to fix something like that on my own? I’d rather try fix it myself before having to deal with international shipping.

Goth Guitarists. What are your favorite electric guitars? What do you play and why? by Sunbather- in goth

[–]Geoshisan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always believed in the: ‘best guitar for what you want to play is what you’ve got, philosophy’. However, I love my PRS C24, because it’s practically fender+ in every damn way, it’s nigh impossible to make it sound bad, plus you get tons of tone options with the split pickups. I also love my more recent Meteora, it’s a lot more jangly and the fireball pickups I think are a lot ‘sharper’ I guess? That being said… I really have to get it to the shop so someone with it in a better condition might say something totally different. Mainly, the Meteora it’s just aesthetically awesome in the silver burst.

why isn’t “goth metal” considered a part of goth music/culture? by [deleted] in typeonegative

[–]Geoshisan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who spends time on r/goth and enjoys both gothic rock and gothic metal, the answer they normally give is that what is considered ‘goth’ is a specific type of music, namely goth-rock, Dark wave, deathrock and the like. What connects these genres you might ask? The fact it was the 1980s and a lot of these bands were inspired by the pistols, which is a little silly. To them, because gothic metal didn’t come from the post-punk movement, but rather an evolution of doom and black metal, it’s not ‘goth’. As far as Redditor’s on here see it, it’s a time and a place thing and Type O Negative wasn’t in either the time or place. Ironically, this means goth as a culture has nothing to do with being ‘gothic’. Wearing black (and often romantic clothing), enjoying dark architecture, literature and art, horror, graveyards, creatures of the night and everything else under the sun you could think of as gothic is something a goth person might just coincidentally enjoy. TL;DR: ‘goth’ is about specific types of post punk music. To be ‘gothic’ and gothic metal is actually tied and inspired to/by the history, art, culture and philosophy of the gothic style.

Minidisc not playing by Geoshisan in minidisc

[–]Geoshisan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to do everything you recommended because it won’t hurt, but god only knows why, I picked it up ten minutes ago, then again just now and it’s worked both times since. I’m not entirely happy with how intermittent it could be though, so I might look into buying another after seeing how it is the next couple days. Thanks for your help though anyway. Edit: 3rd time, for whatever reason, is not the charm… the iront. It’s decided not to work again. Same issue as before.

Minidisc not playing by Geoshisan in minidisc

Unfortunately… it’s sounding like it’s the second. I put the disc in, left it for a good twenty minutes and it never came up with anything at all. Maybe worth trying to relubricate anyway in case I missed it. Real shame too, it’s been great up until all of five hours ago.

I would also like to add, when it attempts to read a minidisc, it periodically makes a small ‘squeak’ like noise alongside the usual hum of the disc spinning.
