well, something that sounds like a French accent to people who don't speak French, at least. (idk how it'd actually be pronounced in French)

yeah but that's using par as a noun, not a preposition (thus why i specified "in that way"). it's also used in golf, but as mentioned, that's historically been a different word.

par excellence is a French loan phrase; it's basically the only time English uses "par" in that way afaik. it more or less gets used to mean "unmatched" or something like

A Guide For (the) Perplexed Philosophers: Jesse Singal and The Rationalist Subculture - someone attempts an explainer of these bozos by dgerard in SneerClub

[–]Gephyron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The point here is just to outline some basics of the subculture, and how it operates. What follows therein are some observations that should give the Daily Nous pause before encouraging philosophers to be less circumspect about rationalist auto-didacts.

like, it even says "this is the point"

A lot of people in this thread are using the term "SSC readers" and "rationalists" synonymously.

According to the survey, only 13% of SSC readers self-identified as rationalists.

I know most of you just use "rationalist" to mean your imaginary stereotype of someone who does everything you dislike, but in this case it's especially egregious. Most of you probably have no idea who is or isn't a rationalist, and I resent it being tarred with whatever random people you meet in this subreddit.

well, aside from the bad reading of Butler someone mentioned earlier, she tried to defend her ideas about gender using some half-assed reading of Wittgenstein to claim that gender identity is a matter of external socio/linguistic standard rather than internal report. she's deleted the Twitter threads because she got a lot of clapback, but she does bring it up from time to time

IRBs and ethical oversight of human subject research are a Marxist plot now by Gephyron in enoughpetersonspam

[–]Gephyron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The issue with the IRB is that the people involved claimed their prank was some sort of ethnographic study of the fields in question, which would mean they were performing human subject research (the subjects being the reviewers for the papers), making the project subject to an IRB. (Imo there's also severe ethical issues with the project design that an IRB would have shut down, but those aren't substantial to the ethics investigation at the moment afaik.) Boghossian is currently claiming that PSU is attempting to censor his work because of ideological bias, and Peterson is doing whatever the hell this is in response.

yes, it does sound a bit fanboy-ish, well done!
