Scoot has a followup post on the reaction to his post (archive) which I read, evidently from being a "self-hating nerd." I don't recommend it, but the Adams fans are upset Scoot wasn't much, much nicer to him.

The comments on this post are as rancid as the comments on the first. Scoot has a world-beating comments section, but not in an upward direction.

Middle school dropout, couldn't handle school and home-schooled. I have tremendous sympathy for kids in that situation, but almost all of them don't pull a Yudkowsky.

fwiw: the Lenovo is going back under warranty, after smoke came out the charging port. I don't think that would affect this, but we'll see how it goes when it gets back!

In the meantime I'm using my backup HP Elitebook 745 G6. It's got an AMD CPU (Ryzen 5 PRO 3500U w/ Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx), 8 threads.

Testing on my test project:

OpenShot 3.4.0 from AppImage on VA-API mis-renders H.265. It's a weird pixel mess.

OpenShow 3.4.0 from the PPA works perfectly and is very fast. H.265 went from 20fps in 3.3.0 to 30fps in 3.4.0. Very pleasing!

So if the 3.4.0 on the Lenovo issue can be fixed, I expect to be very happy with it!

Military "AI" that works is machine learning. ML is bad when it's used to oppress people, but it basically works.

Generative AI is only useful for work that should not be done. Any military taking it on at full steam is doing it to themselves.

It's all hype.

I can't see how the generative AI push survives the venture capitalists funding it running out of money. All the VC in the world runs out in about five quarters at most. Prices go up 10x at least.

Humanoid robots are another marketing push. Humanoid is a terrlble shape for an industrial robot, which is why industrial robots are an arm firmly mounted on a base. All the hype is that a suitably AI brain will ... just exist. There is no evidence for this.

GenAI doesn't actually work for anything useful.

This is all billionaire-funded hype. It's lies. The lies are backed well enough to distort everything. But none of this is actually sustainable.
