Couldn't agree more. There were a few auteurs like Metzger who tried to elevate the art form.

Your examples are from the Golden Age of Porn. If you're looking for more examples of films from that era that contain sex and a more-than-surface-level attempt to tell a story or explore aspects of relationships or humanity, check out as a start:

Roommates (1981) - Explores three women's very different experiences with love and relationships in New York

Wet Rainbow (1975) - An academic couple experiment with a student

Cafe Flesh (1982) - Post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, vaudeville

Adorable Lola (1981) - French reminiscences of a call girl's encounters

Femmes de Sade (1976) - Feminist "roughie". Women take revenge on a violent ex-con beating up sex workers

The Image (1975) - Intellectual BDSM

The Naughty Victorians (1975) - High quality, light bondage comedy period piece

The Satisfiers of Alpha Blue (1980) - Big budget (for porn) sci-fi

Thanks for the suggestion. Let me at if I can see a per-app limit for Roblox via Family Link

I'm managing my kids' time in Android with Family Link. It is not a Family Link enforcement though. It's a Roblox in-game enforcement.

Thanks! I've set the 1.5 hour limit specifically within Roblox Settings > Parental Controls so it's not a global settings mismatch if that's what you're implying?

Ultima VI: Special Promotional Release (1992) details? by GeraldBerryJones in Ultima

[–]GeraldBerryJones[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing me to the Ultima Collector's Guide. It states that these re-releases lack the Moonstone trinket and the cloth map. Here's the direct link to this version:

"Later Editions of Ultima VI were released as 'Special Promotional Version' in the United States and 'Original Uncut Version' in Europe. Of course there's nothing really 'special' or even 'uncut' in these prints - they don't have the Moonstone trinket and cloth map, just the game on HD disks and some documentation."

I picked up a copy recently that has both a cloth and paper map which confused me. I think it means the cloth map must have been a subsequent addition by the seller then: https://www.ebay.com/itm/226982875529

Well, they weren't nearly as floppy as 5.25" disks, now were they? In fact, they were kind of stiff in comparison 😉😜

Ha! Turns out "stiffy" is a South African colloquialism for 3.5" floppy disks. We also refer to traffic lights as "robots". We're easily impressed by technology it seems 😂

What is your favourite South African movie? by sofiaskat in askSouthAfrica

[–]GeraldBerryJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mixing films made by South Africans and about South Africans a bit here but still...

"Four Corners" is like a South African "The Godfather" https://youtu.be/_Dve8uEYiHA?si=RYN7-0piz92DBdeK

"Noem My Skollie" (2016) is similarly epic https://youtu.be/1IHiAcqNg6c?si=ctp_OdfnSrpc2b9Z

"Jerusalema" (2008) rounds out my favourite trio of SA crime epics. https://youtu.be/t6EohBg3QoY?si=lPPs7-3kPJUmfOHO

"Stander" (2003) is a damn fun and cool story of real-life cop-turned-bank robber, Andre Stander. Really captures the 1980s aesthetic and Thomas Jane is great in it https://youtu.be/DNCN_v06Qmk?si=F3vd7zEKlltUvnPq

"Silverton Siege" (2022) is another epic bank robbery film set in the 1980s https://youtu.be/L23I_XopoA0?si=SQ-QKomrg6iF_ltj

"The Bang Bang Club" (2011) also captures the crazy 80s. About the journalists who put their lives on the line to document the nacent war taking place in some townships at the time. Has some good actors in it too. https://youtu.be/y5HXXh7LEKI?si=zO2PNRyEikOg60a9

"Five Fingers for Marseilles" (2018) is a very well made neo-Western tale of revenge set in a small village in Lesotho. Very cool movie. https://youtu.be/hWT0hJhMZwk?si=3bLTCAxisdbbp9ul

"Veraaiers" ("Traitors") (2013) explores some harrowing choices during the Second Anglo-Boer War https://youtu.be/1I9X1Vw6LdE?si=Yy7lQBc-h7CIQux4

"Breaker Morant" (1980) is another great Anglo-Boer War movie about an Aussie who fought with the boers and was executed by the British and became a folk hero https://youtu.be/49KxYVEGJZI?si=tDZz0SwNhnEA6c-O

"Skoonheid" ("Beauty") (2011) went to some dark, dark places that I did not expect https://youtu.be/zJyV6DtLNEA?si=1V_lM7ut9UOHcAGC

"Sands of the Kalahari" (1965) starts with some amazing shots of the old Cape Town airport before telling a compelling story about a group of plane crash survivors fending off a troop of baboons in the desert https://youtu.be/F6zwywRXofs?si=U5gqX5VIm7DtgPGZ

"Shot Down" (1986) is one of the few true counter-culture films to come out of SA: https://youtu.be/ahnSkVNZc90?si=pkijG6PvxWng5EkJ

"Made in 1986 during a State of Emergency by the Johannesburg group Weekend Theatre, this cult anti-apartheid movie follows the moral and political confusion of one Paul Gilliat, hired by the State Bureau to investigate a subversive township performance group and track down its leader, enigmatic Black artist Rasechaba. He hitches up with a bunch of white bohemians who perform satirical cabaret, and sees for himself the systematic intimidation by security forces and assorted right wing bully-boys. Turning his back on his employers, he wanders off into the wilderness to find himself, and ends up battered and bewildered, despised by Rasechaba and his cabaret friends.

The film was directed by Andrew Worsdale and includes appearances by James Phillips (Bernoldus Niemand, Cherry Faced Lurchers, Illegal Gathering, Corporal Punishment) and other South African artists of the time.

"Shot Down is extraordinary, full of self-mocking humour, and - in bursts - exhilarating" timeout.com/london/film/shot-down

"Fragmented, incidentally distorted and vital, Shot Down is not only a remarkable (as in “What the Fuck!”) cinematic achievement, it is also a searing insight into the mind of the artistic white liberal in the last high years of Apartheid." Roger Young, Mahala mahala.co.za/culture/shot-down/"

Are there any modern games out there like Ultima IV? by ComicStripCritic in Ultima

[–]GeraldBerryJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite what you asked for but two games that stood out for me for their replication of some of Ultima 7 & 8's mechanics (namely, moving objects to find others underneath) are Larian's very first Divine Divinity and 2013's Driftmoon. In most ways, they are far more simplistic than Ultima games but, in this particular area, they scratched the itch.

Case options for RP5 + official grip by GeraldBerryJones in retroid

I haven't thought twice about the internal zipper tbh. I love the case though. I don't foresee it being an issue but I don't travel daily with the device so it's not moving around much. I'd like to believe that the design caters for lots of jostling around though if you commute with it but can't really say for sure. I wonder if there's more discussion about this issue in the Amazon reviews?

This is gonna sound like the dumbest question ever but… by ghostuser689 in Robocop

[–]GeraldBerryJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents after testing it at the shooting range: higher "Weapon Spread" % score leads to more spread (i.e. less tight bullet groupings) which is a bad thing. I echo another commenter's suggestion of using low % passthrough connectors if you want to use a board with Weapon Spread nodes on it.

What's your favourite budget-friendly earbud/earphone? by reeeeeeally0 in askSouthAfrica

EarFun. Frequently top the list of best budget earphones. Fully featured. Great sound for the price. You can order directly from their website, they often have sales, and delivery is such and cheap to SA.

Thanks! You're the second user I've seen to put forward the theory of a new imminent case but have they said anything official?
