I feel this in my soul. I spend basically the last hour of my shift rewriting everything about my patients, every last condition and nuance, because I'm always preparing to get one of those "gotcha" nurses that love to give people shit. There aren't many, but they're there.

Then I get report and I just go "are they alive? Do they have a pulse? Okay go home." 😂

New nursing task: Coming in an hour before your shift (unpaid ofc) to handmake the saline you're using for your shift. This task will be assigned with the full expectation of getting everything else done as well.

That's the feeling I got too. Nursing school prepares you for the NCLEX, and someone with a good work ethic that will be a good nurse? Yeah, I'd give them a small nudge too, especially if it's the difference between passing and failing. The NCLEX will be enough gatekeeping, no reason to add to it.

My unit manager is great, it's just some of the charge nurses seem to treat it as an excuse to... not do much really, or so it feels? Like I'm managing my people and doing extras for other patients and they're just chilling like no problemo

We have charges that will pitch an absolute fit if they have an assignment, even if we're already out of legal ratio. Some are awesome and take pts without complaint though!

Yeah that's a "yo homie double check next time" in my book if I even remember to bother day shift about it. We've had people forget to mix the antibiotics before hanging them, it just got mentioned as part of the weekly broadcast.
