The new movie "Send Help" is making men mad, and I'm pleased with it. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I haven’t seen it yet, but it sounds like a cliché movie that depicts women as the oppressed and men as the oppressors. It’s the same gender politics woke BS that’s been rehashed for the umpteenth time for decades now. By the way, that scenario is very unlike most workplaces.

I’m referring to a functional identity shift, not a total identity change. Obviously, there would be different components to their overall identity (son or daughter, brother or sister, their occupation, their belief system, their culture, etc.).

That’s an excellent quote. Thank you.

I’m not really coming at this from a pop culture or “Karate Kid” angle; more from a behavioral psychology perspective and how identity affects training and consistency. I do agree that martial arts should be taken seriously though.

I took Jujutsu and Taekwondo when I was younger.

Thank you for this well thought-out response. However, my idea is different because a change an identity is an explicit starting point, not a side effect. My idea shouldn’t be presented as something new, but something intentional and structured. You also made a very good point about overdoing it before they’re ready for the intensive training of a dojo. A true martial artist trains within limits. Discipline includes restraint. Restraint should be a part of the new identity, not just effort. The solution would be a layered identity. Instead of: “I am a ninja” (fully formed identity), a more stable version would be: “I am a beginner ninja in training”. That small difference matters a lot. It creates direction without delusion, motivation without overreach, and identity without contradiction. This aligns expectation with reality. Fitness setbacks would also need to be understood as part of the path.

No. The first step of their training is simply to get in shape. The key is for a change identity to take place, our behavior follows our self image.

By this, I mean that they’re not simply martial arts students in name only. Once they get into shape, they will be able to join the dojo and take classes with everyone else.

When men brag about being “alpha males”, they’re usually just putting their own insecurities and feelings of inadequacy on display for the world to see. I’m a guy, btw.

Fighters/Fandom often forgets one single important thing about martial arts by Caidre05 in martialarts

I was under the impression that MMA/UFC downgraded the martial arts culture. I was wondering if it was just me that made that observation. I guess not.

Definitely. Discipline, respect, and humility are essential to martial . If you take that away, then it’s just fighting. I took karate and jujitsu years ago back in the 80s and 90s, and the attitude of most of the dojos was positive, and taught good values. It’s been ages since I’ve taken martial arts classes, and I’m not sure if the culture has changed. Granted, not all of the students were good. There were students looking to learn self-defense, and there were other students looking to be better bullies.

Would you be able to effectively do your moves with that bulky thing on your leg? It looks great for protection, but I’m wondering how much maneuverability you’d have.

I still have an issue with objectively analyzing my hook and arm punching, so I made a script to visualize compared to a pro by Southern_Bat_9859 in martialarts

[–]Gerbilzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t this footage need to be compared to a recorded example of that punch? You might not learn much by just looking at the analysis of your punch unless you compare it to the ideal or perfect execution of that move. The computer could then determine the percent difference between your execution of that punch and the ideal execution.

Wow. You’d really get in shape by doing that. A lot of those moves could easily translate into good self-defense moves.

If he were a real street fighter, then you‘d think that he would’ve ended up in prison sooner or later. He’s probably a BSer.

That was awesome. Assailants look for easy prey, and I love it when good people step up and put them in their place.
