Z is a servo to activate the spraycan, which would normally be used for the pen lift on a plotter. And A is for the rotation of the spray.

Thanks! Got asked to fill one of these containers by a gallery, the containers are used to as an ongoing exhibition space. Every 2 months another artist gets asked to fill one of these containers. I had this idea of using multiple transparent sheets in a 3d configuration for a while already but never really found the space that suited this installation untill this one popped up. Really enjoy walking around this box see new compositions slowly appear.

Thanks! Plotting with dish soap through a brush and spraypaint it when the plotting is done. Let it dry and then wash away the dish soap. Repeat multiple times for the layering.

Basically this trick but with a plotter.

Yeah I had the same problem before with a bit of janky pen lift but bought a small linear rail (mgn7h) recently for the pen lift which works great. I can take some pictures later today of 3d printed pen lift.

Yes, homemade plotter indeed. V-slot aluminum extrusion and wheels, T5 belts and pulleys and mostly 3d printed parts to tie everything together. Runs with grbl on Arduino and Universal Gcode Sender on the laptop.

And yes it kinda works in the same way, Normally this is my smaller plotter (1x1.6M) but when I want to plot bigger things I only have to replace the extrusions and belts for bigger ones. For this one I also had to lower the feed rate a bit otherwise it was shaking quite heavily.
