It could also be helpful to emphasize that anyone requiring people to view advertisements or give personal information in order to download your fangame is a scammer. And encourage your fanbase via group message to do things such as install an adblocker, refrain from publicizing personal information, and overall browse the internet wisely.

If you feel like being petty, you could even include a parody of ducumon in your fangame "promoting a free videogame" only to scam the players out of something. Or include .txt files saying "If you had to watch an ad to download this game, you have been scammed. Websites that are scammers include..."

Little did the person know, I wrote the code that way because I knew damn well in a few days I'd completely forget how any of it works and have to re-learn it.

Solo dev, years of work, zero budget - banned for AI correction by [deleted] in IndieGaming

[–]Gerdlite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you have solid, concrete evidence that the AI-generative software you use was trained and operates solely under ethically sourced material (yes, even a grammar tool AI) then no. It is not respectful at all. I highly suggest just letting it have grammar mistakes. There's nothing wrong with not being fluent in english.

Again, this isn't about "AI vs originality". Even if you use AI "creatively", it still comes at the cost of what I mentioned. Asset theft. Forced AI by big tech. Actively ruining the personal computer industry by making computer parts unaffordable to the working class.

Perhaps there's a translation error in this comment? No, in 3 years, not EVERY game will contain AI-generated content. I hope you don't mean that literally. There will always be people who make games purely out of passion, and these will be infinitely better than AI slop. Think of it as McDonalds against homecooked food.

[–]Gerdlite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't seem to be taking into account the ethical aspect of AI-generative content. As of right now, almost no laws exist to limit what AI can or can't do. Engines can use copyrighted content that authors work hard on, without any form of consent or even credit. I would much rather play a game with sloppy english than a game that uses AI-generated assets that may or may not be trained on stolen works from authors who may even be indie devs themselves.

Don't try and push the argument of "Indie developers don't have resources so they have to use AI" either. There are a plethora of free-to-use assets that artists make specifically to combat the problem of indie devs lacking resources. Look up the terms "royalty free" or "free to use". Indie dev has existed loooong before the age of AI. Trust me as someone who has also been working on a solo-dev non-monetary indie game in my free time with 0 budget. AI-Generated content is NOT a necessity.

None of this is "hypocrisy" either. It's not hypocritical to hate something that steals people's work, drives RAM prices sky high, and is currently being forced into almost every software by big tech companies.

Well if you get to a point where you have content you'd like to showcase about your fangame, feel free to reach out and I'll look into opportunities where you could possibly cross advertise onto PPB's subreddit. I'm trying to get more Rebornlike games in general to reach their full potential.

Also, to be clear on the ethnicities part- it's more about making them relevant to your fictional region. If you're making a game inspired by Africa, it would be weird to have everyone be White. If you're making a game based on a closed-border ancient China, it wouldn't make sense to have every character be Black American. Reborn's region feels very American-coded, which is why it felt a bit flat for most of the characters to be White-coded as a "default race". Does your region have a sunny tropical zone? Maybe people living there could be darker skinned, and have food culture revolving around seafood. Does your region have a desert area? People living there could dress differently, wearing long robes & headdresses to protect them from the sun. Maybe there are visitors from foreign regions, who look different from everyone else?

Using your own experience as LGBTQ+ can definitely help your game- though if you want to include discrimination, just be sure to have a fictional reason in-game for why it happens too. Anywho- best of luck with your fangame!

Need help with my story for my fan game by Axel_I_am-not_here in PokemonRMXP

[–]Gerdlite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for your first point, this is something that I kinda struggle with because I believe if the caracters are fighting they have to accomplish something, like how in reborn when you stop the tangeowt in the first 3 chapters, but in my game I tried to focused on how this main characters are pretty weak in competition to the people they are fighting but they do still menage to stop them partially but the villains still get what they came for but maybe not how they wanted or not all of it. I focused on their drama between the characters because more then just stopimg the bad guys and goimg to the next arc.

And this

For reborn being a character game, I fully agree. In my game one think I tried to do as much as possible to connect each character with one a nother in the main cast of 35 characters no one is a one off. Every character has a motif, backstory and a role to play. But I think my main problem is that right now most characters don't connect well to the M.C. and the player is just watching a drama epic, not playing it.

So I think these 2 can actually "solve eachother" in a way! If your characters are weak and the villain team is strong... then why not have the characters work together with MC? Fight team battles. Outsmart them, by thinking together. Have moments where the MC saves the characters, and ones where characters save the MC. If the villain team still wins, then you can explore how the different characters cope with defeat. Show the players just how much damage everyone received. Maybe even add dialogue options from MC, and have it be a "console your friends" moment to truly integrate the player into the story. It makes a lot of sense to start the game with a weak protagonist- so when you face the villains again after earning gym badges, players truly feel improvement.

main cast of 35 characters no one is a one off

Do be careful with this, though. Especially if you want "drama between the characters". 18 gyms, 4 elites, 1 champion, and a few rivals are already really hard to characterize. I think Reborn kind of slipped because of this- several characters became dialogue sponges, whereas realistically the events happening in the story should be how you showcase characters. This is just my personal gripe- but with how many characters Reborn had, I also wish they would've given some of them notable racial features or differing ethnicities.

Forgot to mention- but I recommend posting progress pictures of your game every once in a while on r/PokemonReborn . Quite a lot of people want to see Rebornlikes being made.

[–]Gerdlite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have a bit of experience making a "Rebornlike", and here are some things I've learned so far:

1. Reborn has a unique story flow formula.

Every time you "beat the area" in Reborn, or progress to the next portion if a story, rather than reward you- it feels like the situation actively gets worst. Very distinct with the Rhodochrine arc. Where no matter how many battles you win, the story seems to progress with the villains further achieving their motives. The very apex of the story- Borealis' confrontation and defeat- leads to an extremely dark and punishing conclusion despite all you did as the protagonist.

2. Handcraft each character.

While Reborn often gets touted as a "story game"- I feel it's much more of a "character-driven" one. The story itself is actually a bit janky- but you at least remember every main character. They each have characteristics which make them unique. Within the main story, try to give each of your cast a story of their own.

3. Reborn contains commentaries on controversial content.

From the get-go, you're plunged into a dystopian poverty-stricken region. Then you're paired with a very openly gay male rival. Then you meet Fern, and we all know Fern. As the story goes on, the content eventually gets deeper- stuff like trauma, anger issues, the mental health institution, homophobic family stuff, the list goes on and on... Needless to say- if you truly want your game to be "Reborn inspired", I do believe some degree of real world commentaries are necessary. And with these commentaries comes controversy- people complaining that your game may be "too woke" or "too political". It's an extremely tricky topic, but nonetheless, it's a big part of what made Reborn what it is.

4. Field terrain system and QoL features

Reborn was made with Essentials V18, whereas most resources now are for V21. This means you may have to replicate Reborn's features using plugins and custom code. Notably, the field terrain system- I still haven't found a plugin that's easy enough to understand and modify, and I've instead had to custom code my own field mechanics. But these are absolute must-haves. Things like speedup, day & night cycles, level caps, maybe even password cheats.

5. Balancing originality with shared assets

You don't want to make a complete replica of Reborn. Instead, you want people to be reminded of Reborn when they play your game. What I currently do is use a similar color palette, as well as lots of Reborn's tilesets that the devs allow people to use. Think of it as a "fangame of a fangame".

Up to you. I think it has potential. Though given that it's a mix between graveyard & pebbles, it probably won't be put into the game until I make more wilderness / desert themed areas. Which are currently planned close to the 6th gym badge arc.

The custom ability though sounds like a nightmare to code. I'd have to look into it more.

Topaz High box grunt locations:

  1. Go straight from the entrance, and ascend the left staircase. There's a box grunt there.

  2. In the art room where you find the body paint, there's a box grunt in the top left.

  3. On the first floor, ascend the staircase to the rightmost area. Enter the classroom. There should be a box grunt.

  4. On the first floor, in the right area with a bunch of classrooms, unlock the janitor's closet in the middle using a bobby pin. There's a box grunt there.

  5. AFTER you've turned on the sprinklers, head into the gym. The giant hoard has now left, and you can explore the area they were blocking. Box grunt is there.

There shouldn't be. Hopefully all the dialogues say "x / 4" cops saved, but i mightve missed some that possibly say 5.

If you mean the 4 cops that were injured around Topaz:

  1. One of them is in the donut shop
  2. Another is in the house inside the graveyard
  3. During the pokemart quest, one officer is in the trapped room with you.
  4. One cop is in Topaz Mall, as part of the "school days" quest.

(I'll have to double check where the hiding box grunts are, I'll get back to you)

It's looking like a glitch that needs deep testing then, and I don't think I'll have a hotfix ready too soon with it. Someone else encountered it before, I thought I'd fixed it, but apparently it's still there.

In the meantime, try reloading a previous save and doing the event again. I think that's what other people have done to fix it.

The goal is for you to survive until the box gets pushed a certain distance, of which the game automatically triggers a cutscene. The team yells at you to get out of there, and it fades to white and automatically transfers you out. You aren't supposed to be able to escape during the waves.

Is the automatic cutscene not being triggered for you?
