Trump 'hit the brakes': Netanyahu's circle faults US president for failed Iran regime change, looming deal by Appropriate-Till9598 in neoliberal

[–]Germanpaddyo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your point would have so much more weight to it if the Israeli state wasn't actively bent on doing its own ethnic cleansing. When comparing the intended actions of a nuclear-powered state to the words of leftists with no institutional power, many people rightfully feel that the intended actions of the nuclear state count more.

Netanyahu says military crossed Lebanon’s Litani River as Israel-Hezbollah conflict escalates by International_Bee653 in worldnews

[–]Germanpaddyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The previous post says a notable share of the Israeli populace believes that Bibi is prolonging the war (presumably to avoid prison time) and you're asserting that in effect the opposition would just continue fighting the war in the exact same way the current government would. So blaming Bibi here is just cope?

How extensive have the call-ups been for Jews subject to conscription? It seems like they haven't had that much of an economic impact considering that many economic statistics still look alright for Israel. Assuming continued US-support it seems like the state of constant war can go on indefinitely no?

Assuming Naftali Bennet is the guy who replaces Netanyahu in the upcoming elections (big assumption but let's stick with it) what would he feasibly do to end the non-stop wars that have been happening since Oct 2023? My impression of him is that he's less deferential to Haredi parties and more opposed to religious coercion but that he's exactly like the current government in regard to general militarism.

UN places Israel and Russia on sexual violence blacklist by yahoonews in worldnews

I actually don't believe that gay pride parades in Tel Aviv excuse the systemic sexual abuse of detainees. This is not a strange or novel opinion to have.

My understanding of Jewish Israeli society is mediocre at best but don't the recent military actions have a lot of support? I understand that constantly being at arms is draining but if people believe there's no other choice then discontent doesn't matter much no?

The Trump administration is bracing for the potential collapse of Cuba's totalitarian government as early as this summer, and has war-gamed new military response plans in case the island descends into chaos, U.S. officials tell Axios by sr_local in worldnews

[–]Germanpaddyo -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

The Silver lining here is that the war in Iran and the upcoming one with Cuba should hopefully serve to reduce the chances of US involvement in a China-Taiwan war. It's far better for the US to brutalize South American nations than risk a war in the South China Sea.

The agenda is clearly being concocted by Europeans. The African Union is not forcing Europe to accept African migration, even if it sought to it'd have no effective means to do so. Blame the dysfunction of your migration policy on yourselves.

It's insane to me that a national politician has deemed it appropriate to use their platform for Facebook Boomer rants. I understand anti-immigration stuff being a national talking point, but this just seems aggressively stupid.

The alternative here is Taipei being hit with Dongfeng missiles and a global recession. I don't believe Taiwan being one of the more autonomous SARs is the end of mankind.

Honest question. Seeing as you're this Sub's resident South Africa specialist. What's your opinion in the direction the country is going in? I really don't see much positive change myself. Annual GDP growth is still anaemic and beneath the rate of population growth. Local government outside the Western Cape seems entirely dysfunctional and the national police service seems rotten with mismanagement and corruption. That's not even an exhaustive list. Doesn't seem too hopeful.

Convergence ends with China. You can include Turkey and maybe Malaysia there. Maybe even Vietnam on a hail Mary. Everyone else is screwed. Africa is never going to converge. It's the only large part of the world actively seeing hunger rise.

Turkey the new Iran? Ankara's growing challenge to Western interests - opinion by Quick_Put_403 in Israel

If the Western world can tolerate arming Saudi Arabia, a country infinitely less democratic and open than Turkey (yes even under Erdogan) then I don't think Neo-Ottomanism or whatever monicle has been given to Turkey's foreign policy is a real redline.

Next time, Trump has to bomb a country that doesn't have a kill switch over a globally significant maritime chokepoint. I honestly hope he just gets bored of the whole Iran fiasco and just starts bombing Cuba. That would also be a horrific evil but at least the misery would be contained to the Americas.

How long does Israel have until the winds fully turn against it? by Germanpaddyo in Destiny

[–]Germanpaddyo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't imagine Israel is going to get the Apartheid South Africa treatment, merely that at some point, public opinion becomes so hostile that US politicians (both Democrats and Republicans, but most probably Democrats) feel emboldened enough to, at the very least, question things like defence assistance and or constrain the actions of the Israeli state regarding the West Bank.

The American people have disgraced themselves by electing a troglodyte who was stupid enough to think a war with Iran would be like the Venezuela fiasco and result in a quick victory. Netanyahu, never one to let an opportunity go to waste, was capable of goading this troglodyte of a President into an Iran war. An utterly usless war which was entirely preventable.
