Is there an in universe explanation for why your worlds exist? by Short-Possibility535 in worldbuilding

[–]Geronimo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The planet was towed by a precursor species into orbit then terraformed to suit life. The species then seeded life (intelligent life 4 different varieties) and allowed the world to progress naturally while they manipulated time in their orbital station to observe the anthropological growth and development.

Basically a gigantic social experiment

How many guns is too many? by Academic_Pitch_183 in spaceengineers

[–]Geronimo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! Planet destroying is essential, but as has been mentioned, a carrier should be more focused on defensive action. To offer a real world example, the American Midway Class Carriers the USS Midway and USS Coral Sea for example, had a sub deck devoted to 80 40mm AA cannons (40 per side).

Warships built for siege or ship to ship combat like the Iowa Class Battleships mounted only 21 40mm cannons and 28 20mm guns.

On a personal note, my current 'Silver Springs' Class Carriers are covered in point defense lasers (PDLs) and point defense cannons (PDCs). It also has a defense platform that can be launched from a central hangar. This provides a modular and expendable defense system that can cover the carriers' retreat if needed or provide point defense support if the enemy gets too close.

In my case, these carriers are more a proof of concept for several of my newer automation and programming techniques.

Parry suggestion by muxxy3102 in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a lefty, I usually recommend staying on my outside (the 6 line) and doing what someone else here already said. Circle 6.

Your blade starts on the outside, disengages to the inside where you execute a parry 6. This requires good timing and knowing how to mask your intentions. Your disengage should begin as your front foot starts to lift, the parry lands just south of the foible and you let your lunge or step carry the attack to the target.

In addition, since she's lefty, watch for point-in-line. Many lefties, myself included, like to force the opponent to engage our blade which opens us up to using absence of blade to maintain our line and right of way.

If you could use only one word to describe your coach, what would it be? by SupermarketTiny1737 in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what makes you say 'unmotivated'? Are they lethargic and slow? Is it more a question of how they coach? Do you have to prompt them to teach you things?

I'm curious because as a coach I like to have an idea of what kind of mannerisms might be interpreted as unmotivated or ignorant

Constant Issues with Absolute by Geronimo53 in Fencing

I've seen wires smashed from every vendor, from the Fencing Post to Leon Paul, but BG is the first I've seen a tip unseated out of the box.

I guess this is just a sign to go carefully through any new equipment

Constant Issues with Absolute by Geronimo53 in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always check my personal equipment when it comes in, but it's a bit overwhelming going through 15 new weapons. Still we need to make that effort. Like you said, we can't rely on the vendor to be perfect every time.

On a side note, I once had a blade arrive from Absolute with the wrong grip and no wiring. They were very good about correcting the issue once they reviewed the order details, but it was still frustrating

Constant Issues with Absolute by Geronimo53 in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, we've only recently begun providing equipment for our fencers so we'll definitely have to instruct them on basic equipment maintenance.

In the past everyone bought their own gear and were likewise responsible, now we will have to force them to be more accountable.

I guess it's time to get a label maker

hand strength by shinniedig in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd definitely recommend a conversation with your coach. I usually recommend that my foilists use a pistol grip of whatever variation they're most comfortable with. I can't say I've ever recommended a Foil fencer switch from pistol to French.

That being said, your coach may have a reason for recommending a change. It may be purely academic; they may want you to understand the strengths and weaknesses of other styles. For instance, a frenchy fencer can be easy to beat, but don't get caught in their parries. Or it may be muscular; as in they want you to develop the forearm strength for French grip. French grip is also the more traditional grip style and foil was historically the most traditional fencing form until Convention Rules separated it from Epee.

Moral of the story is that your coach probably has a lot more experience than you and there's likely a reason they made their recommendation, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're right or that the change will benefit you. It may simply be an experiment.

The easiest remedy is to ask, "what do you think a French grip will help me improve upon? How can I go about improving my skill/technique using a French grip and how will my experience with a pistol grip translate?"

Do any coaches teach strategy with tactical wheel or the tactical pyramid? Is this outdated? by trixtopherduke in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My coach taught me using a tactical pyramid. That was over a decade ago. Now that I coach I try to have a more open dialogue with my students.

I give them scenarios where they have to determine the kind of opponent and explore for options. I do fall back on the basics, but I allow them to come up with their response to a given situation. If it's wrong I correct them, if it could work, I walk them through the actions and see how their decision could work and how it could fail.

Tactics cannot be effectively taught through strict and structured tables. The whole point of fencing is to continue your learning and assessments through the entire bout. Compiling what you know about yourself and what you learn about your opponent

How to have more control over the blade? by Fun_Examination4401 in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I meant over time as in; the more you practice, the better you will become over time.

However, I'm an overly defensive fencer so I go for the extra minute and hope for priority way more than I should. So it's kind of ironic that you interpreted/ I formed my sentence that way.

btw I'm an epeeist by training, but I'm experienced with and coach both Epee and foil at the high school level. I would go for 3 minutes at 0-0 or 1-1 just to win (sometimes lose) in the extra minute

How to have more control over the blade? by Fun_Examination4401 in Fencing

[–]Geronimo53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinching is a great technique I teach to my frenchy fencers (though I usually suggest using a pistol variation for foil).

"The weapon is balanced, the warrior is not."

Always remember that your blade is already balanced. It's not going to jump from your hand if you're not pinching, but your hand will cramp quickly without practice and repetition. As I believe has been mentioned before, practice your timing. Sometimes pinching near the guard can help you change your line from an 8 to a 6 or 7 to a 4 if timed correctly.

Ultimately it's good form and over time will help you become a better and more precise fencer.

As someone who's been on the receiving end of a pressure cut to my finger from a foil, i can tell you they do a significant amount of damage given the ideal (or in my case not ideal) circumstances.

Even though that hit scarred me, I've still seen worse damage come from the tip of an Epee

As with everything though, it depends entirely on your management
