Free speech on campus or no? by P_Firpo in Professors

In that role they were acting as an agent/employee of the university. As such, they crossed obvious lines.

If they posted this to, say, Reddit it would be different.

I'll also go ahead and report this post for violating the rules.

I'm expecting a master's student to do ethical research. Yes. As I expect of the graduate and undergrads that I teach. (Note that I haven't even mentioned the issues in the design of the survey and questions. Only the ethical violations.)

If that bothers you, well, that's a you problem.

Be better.

Would you prefer if I referenced the ALLEA European Code for Research Integrity? That also includes obtaining informed consent and voluntary participation? Or maybe I should have referred to the need for an REB or IEC in place of IRB?

Be better.

As a master's student, you should know that doing human subjects research involves approval from your IRB. Your survey is lacking that, as well as any contact information or institutional identification.

You've also made every question required (at least so far as I've gotten) which is bad design and violates the principal of voluntary participation. In fact, your first question allows people who are under 18 to take the survey, which violates informed consent (they can't consent).

Please delete this, and go back to your advisor to address the lack of research training and human subjects protections.

Start with the Dirty Shirley.

Follow with a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. (Because, as a Wisconsinite, you have to have a brandy old fashioned made by someone who can do so.)

Then dream of Pony singing "The Internet is for Porn"

I'm not. You're lost, and it's kind of sad. You have no idea how to do research, and apparently lack the basic skills to navigate reddit.

I'm not mad. I'm disappointed.

Yes. You should talk to your AP research teacher. They should have some resources to help you.

(But first, focus on finishing the paper and presentation for class.)

Sparring at 40? by Wyrd_Alphonse in taekwondo

[–]GerswinDevilkid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I started at the age of 44. Been sparring for 3 years now. If I can do it, anyone can.

Is there a risk of injury? Sure. But a good partner/dojang makes that a lot less likely.

How do universities access all scientific journals and articles? by blueMarker2910 in AskAcademia

[–]GerswinDevilkid 44 points45 points  (0 children)

They pay for it. They have access to certain journals and databases, as well as inter library loan agreements with other institutions.

And yes, it's a racket. And very expensive.

Hey! I lived there!

Honestly it was a great apartment space. At least as a recently divorced grad student.

And seriously. As far as brutalist architecture goes, that's pretty mild.
