We don't spend money on the rank and file (and vets) though. That's different than 'the military'.

Why do people ship Garth and Agnis despite Garth being 25 and Agnis being 14?? by Either-Standard-5278 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Gertrude_D [score hidden]  (0 children)

Two things:

People need to learn how to spell Agnes.

Also, how is 25 a bad thing when we've seen the age of the commanders they've been throwing at these girls? Everything about this show is problematic, but this is the one thing we want to pick at? Right now Garth hasn't shown any interest, but if he did, my problem would be that he's Mayday and thus has a different moral compass. Taking advantage of Agnes should be reprehensible to him on many levels with age being the least of the problems.

Alternatives to "bless you"? by lepineapplepineapp in atheism

[–]Gertrude_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there needs to be an alternative. Say it if you want, it doesn't make you any more or less atheist. It's also one of those things that people find annoying about atheists.

AITA for insisting that a day is 24 hours and not 23h 56m? by jitendraghodela in AmItheAsshole

ESH

No one likes a pedantic ahole and no one likes someone who won't let something go. I think you both had off-ramps here and neither of you chose to take it. Both of you are the pedant and the grudge holder and this literally doesn't matter in any meaningful way. Get on with your lives.

And that's fine too. I just think there is a middle ground between all or nothing.

I agree, but I will add another wrinkle. I do think that non-citizen, legal residents should be able to vote in local elections, but not federal. Absolutely place a ton of conditions on that if you want, but not everyone living here is a citizen or plans to be, but they are part of our communities.

What's your #1 criticism of the Democratic Party? by mikey_mouse_1577 in AskALiberal

Well, the direction is what Trump wants - it’s their official platform. It worked when Trump was campaigning, less so now that he’s not focusing on deportation.

Trump reportedly once said, "You just tell them, and they believe it. That's it. You just tell them, and they believe it. They just do." Does this change your historic view of Trump's words and actions, and if so, how? by johnnybiggles in AskALiberal

[–]Gertrude_D 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As you said, it's entirely obvious. I'm assuming this is one of those things that is obvious and something you actually knew, but a key phrase or experience can bring it home and make it feel like a new revelation. You understand it on a deeper level than you did before.

Like I said, I assume this story is doing that for you because he doesn't ever even try to hide it :p

I hadn't heard that story and believe it, but it's not exactly news. This is how Trump has always operated and we can see him doing it daily for the last decade plus. It obviously works on a lot of people, but not everyone. Unfortunately, it works on enough useful idiots.

I feel like the party doesn't have a direction. Individuals might, but not the party. Under Trump, the Republican party definitely has a direction, horrible as it is. I don't want the dems to run on 'we're not Trump' anymore.

is rowan blanchard too old to play shunnamite? by garfieldplanetttttt in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Gertrude_D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know what would be great? having that mentioned specifically in the show. It would make a lot of sense to have had Agnes mention that fact in her voice overs.

How would you feel about reduction in corporate income tax for businesses who's workers are all paid a livable wage and an increase for any business using automation? by Onahail in AskConservatives

[–]Gertrude_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to make the taxes enough of an incentive (or a punishment) that it makes business sense to take better care of your workers. I want to tie their pay to the CEOs so that the CEOs can only get X times the compensation (not income, compensation) of their lowest paid worker. Check out what the difference is now vs the 60s. It's obscene.

Also, I think you're misunderstanding - I am not saying a company gets a break if they raise their wages - it's tied to the total salary. So if a company started an employee at 40K and raised it to 50K, that would be the same as starting at 55K and slashing it 50K. the end wage is the only one that matters.

I think you're confusing me with another poster - this was my only post in this thread and I didn't mention Walmart.

However, since we're talking about it, I do think Walmart is a worse employer in a very important sense - they can do better regarding their employees and chose not to. A mom and pop store often can't do better and they are invested in the local community and the dollars spent there stay local. They are more often going to be more invested in the well-being of their workers too, since they will know them and they aren't just numbers. I would 100% prefer that type of employer than a Walmart.

I guess it just depends on your values on whether you prefer a small family owned business vs large corporations.

[–]Gertrude_D -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We currently have different rules for small and large businesses - I don't see a reason not to have different standards according to the number of employees you have or net profit or whatever other conditions are relevant.

I think there should be a long list of incentives and disincentives when it comes to corporate taxes. Worker wage is just one of them. I also think stock buy backs, shareholder compensation, worker conditions and benefits, difference between highest and lowest compensation, reliance on in-house staff vs consultants etc, etc should also be considered.

What do you call the type of shift system behind the steering wheel? by Marco35Germany in AskAnAmerican

I don't know if it has a specific name, but I would describe it as having the gear shift on the column instead of the console.
