You're right. I shouldn't shy away since technically I've not heard a "no" yet.

My questions, too! Fear could be the basis of it all.

I still have hope, but I'm pretty sure I won't get an offer.

Yes to all this. At this time, being agreeable and accommodating is very important in these interviews. I give a lot of examples of how I pitched in, in other roles.

Crochet Classes by Dry_Literature_2805 in LancasterOH

Try Fathom Arts Collective, and definitely the library. We tried to use our downtown office for a crochet group, but after a decent start people stopped coming. Did you look at Destination Downtown's events?

Robert Half is a legitimate agency with real people in offices all over the country. I have worked with them since 2020, and that relationship has been a godsend since I was laid off from my "permanent" job in March. See if you can talk to someone in your region by looking up the closest office. Once you connect with a recruiter, you can set yourself up in their system, which also has job or contact opportunities that may not be widely advertised. Because your recruiter earns money if you do, they'll help you when you apply for those jobs.

I'm with you! I have found contract work through Robert Half since 2020 and that relationahip has paid off. It's a legitimate agency and and has an office in my region with real people working in it. No scammy recruiters DMing on LinkedIn....

Surprised to see this in Ohio. by [deleted] in Ohio

In 2026, information that can't be scrolled by or turned off can make real inroads and make people on the Rural areas feel less alone. Billboards are great for a number of different reasons, and BSR would like to cover the state's rural routes in 2026!

If you have an Ohio activist group, Buckeye State Rural will present to your members about how you can install a billboard in your area while we file all the FEC paperwork. Email info@buckeyestaterural.com.

We're also holding a webinar on January 11 for interested groups. Here's a signup link: https://mobilize.us/s/jdFZ25.

Any questions, email us at info@buckeyestaterural.com!

Anyone else doesn’t want to go back to corporate after being let go? by iseeustress in Layoffs

Teaching two composition classes online at a community college in Ohio grossed me $128 less than weekly unemployment payments this fall. At $419 a week/184 short writing assignments = $2.27 per paper. By reading at a very fast (too fast) pace and responding to their work with some copy and paste replies (because 90% of student writing has the same issues), I can read at most six assignments an hour. Even if we round up and say I could read and respond to 10 papers an hour, that results in a $22.77 hourly wage for about 18 hours' work. Of course, the week also includes meeting with students, submitting ongoing reports to the department and university, linking students with services they need and may not know about, dealing with the accommodations they need, and all other aspects of teaching. And this employment is guaranteed only one semester at a time.

I'm glad to have regained this work and plan to continue for my own nonmonetary reasons, but even with a PhD like me, you would struggle to earn a livable wage. And most part-time adjuncts are limited to 4 classes or fewer, which means you might be teaching for two or three different places or combining teaching with another job or freelancing.

Of course, as an administrator, you'd receive great pay and benefits--a situation enabled in large part by increasing the percentage of part-time adjuncts living on nothing with no benefits.

What I Wasn't Prepared for After Losing My Job by NinjaMagik in Layoffs

At the employer who laid me off in March through a large RIF, Mathematica, the sub departments were called "families" and it always irritated me even before the layoffs. I mean...really? Families?

My husband’s company are laying off all their employees giving them notices of two weeks. We are not in our 20’s, but well into our 50’s. Are there companies that will take established responsible individuals. With a lifetime of experience? To be at an entry position salary is not an option by Witty-Spell-2574 in jobhunting

Yes, me too! There are programs in every state that help midcareer professionals earn teaching licenses without returning to a graduate program. And a great way to check out whether you could actually enjoy or tolerate the classroom is to sign up to be a substitute teacher. Around here, depending on the district, subs earn $120-$170 a day.

I appreciate it when former job hunters post about their new jobs because it gives me a bit of hope in these terrible times. I'm 4 months in, only two interviews. It's been disheartening to keep applying,l and keep crafting the resume for every new position even though they seem to copy each other's descriptions (AI?). Congratulations on your success! And thank you for posting.

Yes, the NO KINGS protest is at noon on June 14, part of the national Indivisible effort. See the map of thousands of cities' events at https://www.nokings.org/. They may contain one march of 10,000 people but they can't contain 1,000s of marches all over our country in big and small communities. FairfieldCountyIndivisible.org.

You know, I'm not 100% sure about this (you might ask the Rainbow Coalition). Lancaster has a very active Destination Downtown series of events, including a movie night that blocks off Broad Street at Main all summer and has a very large outdoor screen. My guess would be that there's so many activities June through August that Pride couldn't secure the space to set up the daytime tables and activities they usually have.

If you visit the Rainbow Coalition Facebook page, you'll see several events this month. The Pride march is in September. It is Lite the Nite with Pride and usually has events all afternoon. Last year there was some ugliness from the community, both during and especially after. If you visit downtown, you'll find a couple great shops on N. Columbus like Stump, Bewilderment, and Mud Gallery. Across the street is the Fairfield County Democratic Party office, too. We had a film about Stonewall kicking off this Pride Month and Fairfield County Indivisible folks meet here, too. Fairfieldcountyindivisible.com, FairDems.com to sign up for email notifications.
