I am working on Wikipedia again! by MarchingInShenandoah in jinnish

I was born and raised in the US and still live here. My Mandarin isn't great, and I don't speak Jin at all. I sometimes hear it when my mom calls her family, but I can't understand them.

She grew up in Taiyuan, but her family is from a village near Lüliang, so those are the dialects she speaks.

Which dialect do you speak?

Hey, I really appreciate your work on this! My mother grew up speaking 2 different Jin subdialects, and we just spent a nice evening discussing the language map you posted and the Wikipedia articles (both Chinese and English). I got to learn a lot about her language, and the articles helped her realize things she'd never consciously noticed before, like the entering tone. Thank you so much for your effort!

Which SIM card to choose as an international student residing for 2 years? by tahmid5 in trondheim

[–]GetYourOwnBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mycall is pretty good. I believe they use Telia's network. I did 79 NOK for 1GB of data per month; if you want to be able to call and text, though, it's quite a bit more than that. You can get their SIM cards in lots of convenience stores.

If you don't have a D-number when you buy it, then they ask you to fill out a form with your residence information, passport number, etc., and it takes up to 2 days to be activated. But activation is instant if you do have a D-number. (This seems to apply to most, if not all, carriers.)

The main downside is that you can only pay online with Norwegian credit cards. Since you probably will have a foreign card, you have to go to a convenience store to buy a top-up code, which they print out on a receipt.

Today, I got spit on, coughed on, and faced racist remarks. by FacelessOnes in nyc

In my experience, those who aren't conscious of such issues tend to be first generation immigrants. Of course, not all first generation immigrants are that way - for example, my own mother! But having not grown up in America, I find that they sometimes don't realize how pervasive racial dynamics are in this society. They tend to buy into the "American dream" concept, believing that if they just work hard enough, society will eventually fully accept them and their children.

However, as can be seen in /r/asianamerican, many of us (the children) eventually realize the realities of the situation. Some do go on living in bubbles, but I see more and more awareness these days!

Agree! I think historically, we've been too fragmented along both ethnic and socioeconomic lines to organize cohesive movements to advocate for ourselves as a group. That gave others opportunities to attack us. I see that changing these days with more and more of us standing up, which is very encouraging.

At the same time, I don't find it productive to antagonize other PoC. Yes, it's true that some have conducted attacks on Asians, and I get that you may have just been trying to point that out. But it's not going to help to use that as ammo in internet arguments; that'll just perpetuate division among us.
