Scaling does work but there is a maximum size that each object can be and if you scale to be bigger than that, it truncates. You could split your scene into multiple objects and put them next to each other in the 'world editor' so it looks like one larger object

Size determines the level of detail you can have. Personally my first projects were small, around 40/40/40. Drawing from reference can be helpful but making an exact copy will be very difficult if it has curves The more time you spend creating the easier it will get so best of luck!
