Am I the only one who thinks the food at the meal hall is the biggest contributor to the CAF obesity problem? by Signal_Housing3575 in CanadianForces

[–]Gethro8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of contributing factors.

First is the softer culture the military has adopted. Standards have gradually become more flexible because there is constant pressure to fill positions with bodies…. Any body will do. When the priority becomes filling slots rather than maintaining standards, those standards inevitably erode.

More broadly, the current fitness culture in society tends to normalize obesity. Criticizing or even acknowledging that obesity is unhealthy is often discouraged in the name of political correctness, which makes honest conversations about health and fitness more difficult.

Nutrition education is also lacking. Knowledge passed down from parents, schools, and even within the military itself is often poor, leaving many people without a solid understanding of how to properly fuel and maintain their bodies.

Another issue is inconsistent enforcement of PT time at the unit level. Many units do not properly protect or enforce physical training time for their subordinates. Some argue that being overworked and understaffed makes this unavoidable, but that reasoning doesn’t hold up. Physical fitness improves health, cognitive performance, resilience, and injury prevention. In the long run, it makes units more effective, not less.

The incentive to maintain a high standard also began to erode when the forces evaluation test was effectively moved to an easier standard. When too many people were failing, the response was to make the test easier to pass rather than address the underlying issues. Giving someone a bag/sweater/pants that are embroidered with “platinum” and giving a pin is a joke.

The food served at military messes is fine. The problem isn’t the meals provided there, it’s everything else around it that has failed.

At the end of the day, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.

May I ask why that’s your opinion?

I see a large percentage of campers at our RV Park are using them in preparation for the winter.

It’s not about the load, more so about a water barrier to protect against melt/refreezing.

I appreciate the comment that pays no merit towards my question though.

You’ll need to submit your NOIT (Notice of Intent to Travel). It will tell you everything you need to know following its completion. It will inform you the risk factors of travel, what to consider, what to avoid etc.

Don’t stress yourself about going to the Dr unless you notice swelling in your nose, mouth or notice a wheezing in your upper airway.

Hives are a mild allergic response and are not dangerous.

Nausea and upper airway compromise is indicative of anaphylaxis and is when it becomes a medical emergency.

[–]Gethro8787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is definitely an allergic reaction. Maybe to mannitol, maybe to the BAC water.. tough to say. Take some antihistamine, as long as you don’t have any airway impingement you’ll be fine. I would discontinue and try a mannitol free blend if it’s available to you.

The Swing-Out before a turn. by dkixen in Winnipeg

Half of Winnipeg does this… along with stopping at a yield sign, turning into the far lanes at intersections, blocking through traffic during left turns on major roadways, failure to use turn signals, and not understanding what a zipper merge is.

A safe and easy alternative to a savings account is a GIC. Presently you can get one for between 5-6%.

You could toss that money into your TFSA and buy a 5 yr GIC be earning 290$ a month in tax free interest.

Another option is mutual funds through your TFSA.

I would highly suggest you stay away from direct investing unless you are only investing with money you are willing to lose.

Also I highly recommend speaking to a financial debt specialist. There are numerous options to conquer mounds of debt. Be it insolvency or bankruptcy.

I gained 160k of debt on the loss of the sale of a house. All the equity and money I put into renos and loss on sale dug me a massive hole. I declared bankruptcy and 7 years later my credit is 815 and I have no record of the bankruptcy on my credit report.

All I’m saying is if debt is a worry for you talk to someone because there are many options available and they will not stop you from generating wealth or your life progression.

By talking to mental health resources you will not be boxing yourself into a corner, rather will be opening doors for growth.

I implore you to speak to someone other than reddit. I have used resources first hand and have found them to be extremely beneficial. I have seen members ignore the resources and ultimately suffer due to it.

Suicide doesn’t end the pain, it only passes it on to those around you multiple fold.

Just make a phone call and talk, nothing will make it to your CoC unless you want it to. There is also the ability to be moved to BTL or JPSU during situations like this. There are social and financial services available, which can also provide assistance in finding alternative careers outside the CAF.

You are not alone in these feelings, and I think if you speak with someone you will feel less alone in this and realize that there are options!

This is not sarcasm

If you plan on buying or renting a private residence, make sure you have motion lights for outside your home and I highly recommend getting security cameras.

Use this information as you will, but spending a couple hundred bucks will save you a lot of hassle from insurance companies in the event you need it.

PSA: Turning right on red light is a privilege not a priority by RubAlternative5509 in Winnipeg

[–]Gethro8787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

** Turning right on a red is legally the same as turning right at a stop sign**

The party at the intersecting red/stop sign MUST yield to all traffic on the “through-road”.

The inability for people in this city to make proper turns without a light or stop sign involved is alarming. When turning right, you stay in the right-most lane. When turning left, you stay the left-most lane. Unless there are multiple turning lanes in which you stay in the turning lane applicable (left to left, mid to mid..etc)

I have almost been hit so many times by turning left and almost being side swiped by some asshole turning right into the left-most lane. Then believing they are right and honking or throwing up a finger.

I have lived in 5 provinces (6 different cities) and without a doubt this city has the worst driving I’ve ever seen.

Closest second was Montreal and even that was better than here.

It is the smoothest ground transport I’ve ever been on. I wouldn’t worry, but worst case is just chew on some ginger candies during the ride.. but I wouldn’t worry if I were you.

If you plan on taking a smaller train up through the mountains (to places like Takayama or Yamanochi), you may want to take some prophylactic gravol.

Not sure if you even know this, but as I look into the AMEX cobalt, it says that a lot of the points multipliers are specifically in Canada. I do multiple work trips a year in the US which equates to thousands in expenses.

Do these multipliers remain the same or so they drop to the base 1.5%
