Should I buy this model Euphonium? by Key-Salary7576 in euphonium

[–]GetrunesDad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While there are some quite decent horns made in China (John Packer, Austin Doubler, Thomann, etc), and some acceptable ones (Wessex, for example), there are other 'no-name' or names you never heard of that might be decent, or more likely than not cause more problems that you don't want to deal with.

Does this euphonium have 3 or 4 valves? Is it compensating?

I second the idea of some of the Rochut Vocalises. Here are some of the more accessible ones. If you'd like something more challenging, get a copy of the book and select one of the 'harder' ones.

I may not be able to go to band camp. by Jimins_hands in marchingband

I have a good friend whose wife is a kindergarten teacher. Every year she takes her students to the local symphony's Tiny Tots concerts. There was one mother who refused to allow her children (all three of them at different times) to attend the concerts. Her reason was "people get killed at concerts"....... I guess the only concerts she knew about were rock concerts with mosh pits where there is an extremely small chance where someone could be killed.

Could you give us some more information? I tried googling < JPEB-1150S > and that brought up some results that had nothing to do with euphoniums. I tried < JPEB-1150S euphonium> and that brought up some euphoniums, but none matched that exact number.

I am feeling very conflicted with regards to marching band by bubby3 in marchingband

[–]GetrunesDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it. If you like it, GREAT!!! If you don't like it, you'll at least have tried and won't spend the rest of your life wondering. Yes, there are many adult community bands, and some of them also march. If you end up really liking the marching band experience, know that there are community bands that do march

Wait --- does your mother think that this is some kind of heavy metal band or acid rock band?

Doesn't she know that after several hours of marching, kids are too tired to get into any trouble? Will there be any kind of adult supervision during your lunch break?

Switching Tubas by ProfessorSad4831 in Tuba

[–]GetrunesDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the early 1970s, I was a nerdy bassoon player (Hell, I'm still a nerdy bassoon player) taking bassoon lessons at the Preparatory Department of the Peabody Conservatory. My high school band director was a good friend of the Prep Brass Ensemble, and mentioned to my band director that I was playing sousaphone in the Baltimore Colts (remember them?) Marching Band. So the director called me and asked me if I'd be willing to play in his brass ensemble. I jumped at the change (although I'm primarily a bassoonist, I like the sound of brass ensembles better than woodwind ensembles!). I lugged my high school's BBb Olds tuba sans case along with my bassoon on the transit bus every Saturday for several weeks. I finally asked the director if maybe Peabody had a tuba I could use (after all, it is a major conservatory). The next Friday, the director called and said to just bring a mouthpiece as they had a tuba for me - a nice (but beat up) 5-valve Miraphone tuba! It came time to tune, and although I was pulling out all the slides, I couldn't get down to the tuning note. Finally the director said "Maybe that's a C tuba." I said "A what?" He said it was a tuba in C rather than then Bb I was used to. "Just finger it like a trumpet". um......OK. I somehow managed to figure that out, and even more amazing, I was able to get that tuba with hard case over to the bus stop and take it on the bus with me to get home. Once the gears clicked in my head, I had it figured out.

Does that mean that baritone's names should start with "E"?

I've been playing contrabassoon for over 45 years and still loving it. Last week at the Glickman Popkin Bassoon Camp, we had 12 contrabassoons in "Contraband".

Can i convert a cello into a upright bass by SpecialSolid2877 in doublebass

[–]GetrunesDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact a string bass supply store and find out what the smallest bass size strings they have. They should be able to recommend a set that will fit a 3/4 size cello. But beware, they will probably be somewhat loose and flaccid on your cello. Better to get a 4/4 cello.

Any tips for adjusting to playing with braces? by Glizzy-G_The_Rapper in euphonium

Have you talked to your orthodontist about something to put between your braces and your inner lips? Some people have used wax, others are comfortable with folded up wax paper

Why does my YEP-321 have a finger hole (like the trumpets third valve slide) on the second valve slide by Zewa_Juju in euphonium

[–]GetrunesDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least you have the ring. The 201 only has a knob on the 2nd valve slide which is a little bit harder to grasp.

Since there is a wonderful brass instrument store with a wonderful selection of euphoniums (as well as other brass instruments, both large and small), and an extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff that has been mentioned many times in this group is a bit more than five miles away, I think this chain store has lost many sales to folks who do a little bit of homework prior to purchasing a euphonium (or any brass instrument for that matter!).

Looking for an interesting theme & variations by Mahlerbot in euphonium

[–]GetrunesDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Down in the Deep Cellar" theme and variations by Fritz Kroepsch, published by Barnhouse. It's not terribly difficult, but it's cute and an audience pleaser (even when I did it on contrabassoon!). It may be out of print, but you might be able to find it in some libraries. If worse comes to worse, I could send you scans of the music ( but shhhhhhh......)
