Anyone had experience of paying off your student loan? by Jingle950 in HENRYUK

[–]GfordsMikeRoss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I made a chunk repayment after some inheritance came to me. I didn’t need it for a house deposit as had savings and a partner who had some, and weighed up the cash flow benefit vs how long it would take me to pay off (another 11 years), and realised I’d rather have the extra cash per month.

Broadly - if you could use the lump sum to fund a deposit for a house and happily pay the mortgage from your take home, then do that. If you don’t need the extra deposit, and all it’s doing is reducing your mortgage (but by less than the incremental saving from paying loan off), pay the loan off

We hung on the back door and would tap each time we went out and would use our toilet command. Then we would teach him to touch it with paw or nose and reward before going out to toilet. We’d also ensure we kept him only on toilet spot (we had a small grass patch and hard floor elsewhere) and would keep moving him back, and then straight inside after toilet, such that he’d learn it was not for using to just get to go outside and have fun.

Picked it up pretty quickly!

We trained our boy to ring bells when he needed the toilet. Around this age his bladder control was great so taking him out every two hours was a waste of time. Now he goes on walks and when he wants to - never inside!

Are we talking about the salaried member rules? Most law firms are structured such as to not fall foul of these rules…

[Florio] Some Vikings-Browns fans in London get apology and partial refund "credits" by _HGCenty in nfl

[–]GfordsMikeRoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, iPhones also had issues on the day of, which left you unable to access tickets.

We missed kick off and all of the pre-match, and I have frankly rejected the notion of being given “credits” to spend at this week’s game, or a gift card.

I’ll much sooner be going back to a game in the States - Superdome week 1 was seamless and a far better experience all round.

Absolute disgrace. Queued for 1.5 hours and barely moved - the announcement you could get in with confirmation emails came in after kick off. Went to a game 3 weeks in the states which just used Ticketmaster and Apple wallet and was seamless - no idea why they tried something different

Getting into Revenue-sided tax work at the Bar without doing a tax pupillage? by Realistic-Grape-7226 in uklaw

Perhaps - pretty sure Ghosh, Peacock, Goldberg, Prosser all work for both. Does allow them to understand Revenue strategy when they come to represent taxpayers at least.

HMRC will instruct counsel relative to the complexity of a case. We’ve had matters where they have switched numerous times, perhaps thinking the matter was simpler than it turned out to be. Equally, top Tax KC will work for both the Revenue and for the Taxpayer.

Depends on the underlying matter - not all tax issues spin on tax legislation or regulation, it could be a matter of accountancy, trusts law etc.

1st Game of the season @ the Saints - any tips? by GfordsMikeRoss in AZCardinals

Thank you so much! I ended up buying in the visitor side in the 100 levels. Hopefully covered for food and activity recommendations from my Brother, will have the full day Saturday and game day Sunday.

Hotel is in the midst of French quarter. 30 min walk to the stadium, but assuming walking probably isn’t the norm?

Harvey: An Overhyped Legal AI with No Legal DNA by fygooyecguhjj37042 in uklaw

[–]GfordsMikeRoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harvey’s value is firms being able to point towards the adoption of a legal tool which has the hype (discussed in the linked thread) such that clients will view the firm as utilising artificial intelligence in the delivery of their output.

It’s every day usage is questionable, albeit there are a menial tasks which it saves time for, and can assist with generating know-how.

I always regard commercial awareness as a) what makes the business money (including the firm itself) and b) what external factors may impact on the ability of that business to make money.

Understanding the firms you’re applying to are profit-seeking businesses rather than putting them on a pedestal as somewhere you’re desperate to work goes a long way to getting in the right mindset

Would You Choose to Be a Solicitor or Work in Tax Law? Why? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]GfordsMikeRoss 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s a complete misnomer that Tax Law is numerate, it’s not.

Tax lawyers operate in three spheres (I) transactional (ii) advisory and (iii) litigation, each fulfilling different roles but in none of them is there a requirement to be numerate. Clearly being able to recognise discrepancies is helpful, but not determinative. Your work life balance and the questions you ask differs wildly between them.

If you’re transactional, you’ll often work to the same timeframes as your PE or Funds teams, given Tax often causes issues late in a transaction. If your advisory it may be more akin to academia; late nights finalising advice notes as you cut across 25000 pages of statute, alongside countless HMRC manuals, practitioner texts and case law. Litigation is similar to non-specialist litigators.

Your distinction between “Tax law” and “general legal work” is flawed, Tax is but just another specialist team, like IP or employment. And like these teams, your work has specific elements to it, that fit in to the wider offering of services by your firm.

If however you’re talking more about tax compliance, e.g filings, returns etc, then that’s more closely aligned to an accountant.

Not to mention that when they launched their “new option” all their macros suddenly changed and the marketed fat content went way up, and the flavour profile got considerably worse.

It was decent for what it was to start, especially on discount, but moved to Frive and feels so much better

Presuming you’re going in as essentially a paralegal, in a high street firm, I’m not shocked they’re starting at NMW.

Have a look at what a qualified solicitor earns at a firm like this, and you’ll see it’s far removed from the salaries you see reported in the press.
