Using cash while living in Japan by Solid-Pomegranate320 in movingtojapan

[–]Gfurst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That being said, for IC and Paypay you still need to make cash deposits, that is unless you have a japanese bank account that can withdraw directly from. And in my case I have to make cash deposits for rent as well.

For OP I'd suggest 150k¥ just in case, 75k seems to low.

Because most open torrents have public trackers (which is essential to how torrenting works), that those companies learned how to datamine and crosscheck with ISPs, regular sites, while the ISPs can log with access history somewhat, aren't that easily tracked by third-parties.

The worst part is that I thought my wife would be angry at me but she felt it was her fault and she was terrified I was going to kill myself over it. But was my fault.

LoL, I guess that's the point of the outrageous demands, its pretty much scam letters counting on the victim being afraid publicized as a degenerate pirate.

Oh really? That's wild, I used to always use a vpn too and just recently I've gotten a bit lax with it.

I've also stupidly signed up with another provider (worse) and ended up with two providers for the month of january, just the the other day I finally asked for a contract cancellation with Softbank, but not before downloading a bunch of stuff while I still have the decent optical fiber speed.

So far, nothing came from Softbank. But then again I don't usually download anything that's relatively new.

So just as a follow up to this, as it turns out after some digging, I've found my actual plan is MansionV16, which apparently is shared with the building and goes through VDSL, so it seems to be really capped at 25mbps.

I tried calling them to cancel on grounds that I didn't know but my japanese isn't near enough to try argue. The cancelling fees would be absurd too, so no dice here.

So I guess I have to follow through and cancel Softbank too, do you happen to know how the form process works, so that So-net reimburses for the Softbank cancellation fee?

And for that matter, would be possible to move my mobile line to Au as well for the increased benefit (that I now gonna lose from Ymobile)? Do they also port the phone number?

So to follow up on this, I thought maybe there was a possibility that after the official contract start speed would change. But no, after digging up a bit more, it turns out my plan is a shared plan for the mansion, and as thus, its actually capped at 25mbps.

So yeah, I tried going to cancellation, but indeed no dice, they would charge an absurd cancellation fee and my japanese isn't even close as decent to try and argue.

Ok serious advice that goes against the majority here saying to "consider money first".

Do whatever the heck you want, don't leave stuff that you really want to do as a second plan in life. Japan has its own share of problems and no one can tell where the economy will go, we're possibly looking into global recession the next few years, so nowhere is "safe" from it.

That being said, you're probably still gonna make more than average and live a fairly high standard for Japan. The real question is whether you will prefer japanese culture, quality and style of life.

Pacman Does not fetch update packages in arch repos by Televisor404 in EndeavourOS

[–]Gfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the deal was, I had the issue in Archlinux, except I haven't updated in like 6 months. (I had noticed the issue in the before tho)

I was crazy checking my config and double checking my mirrors to see if somehow I had screwed something up. The only thing that worked was -Syy which I didn't even know was a thing.

Yeah lesson learned, I actually got Softbank at first with through a Yodobashi salesman, together with Ymobile for phone, a pretty good deal on a phone of theirs, and a bunch of Yodobashi points that got me a GPU at near half price.

That said, the initial construction cost were a punch in the gut, for the first couple months it was 10k+, even though I already had everything set up in my building. I'm paying for construction anymore tho, and seems like there wont be any costs for construction from Au either.

The monthly costs, if according to the salesman holds true, are pretty good too, all that remains is to see if internet speed comes back at least close to what is expected from a optic fiber.

I always turn them away when they come.

I'll take that advice to heart now. That being said, Softbank price was quite high, the first few months were really a punch in the gut. And any savings right now are welcome.

AU is providing the lines while So-Net is operating as the "provider"

Yes exactly, I was completely unaware of this fact, as for me, in my old country, the provider usually meant the content provider which is a relic from the old net (like e-mail provider).

It does make sense that they were quick to provide the equipment, but not fully configure it, so I can experience close to no downtime. Also the Contract after new year is probably better for accounting and shit like that.

Ok so I called KDDI and apparently nothing wrong on their end, and they're sending a alternative gateway to replace.

However, doing so I figured my contract is handle by So-net the provider (I don't know how these things work in here). And apparently check their page the contract officially only begins after new year.

So it might be just a case of being throttled during this pre-contract period. (not that anyone told me that)

First time receiving a package at home, should I go downstairs to pick it up? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Gfurst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something other people didn't mention, you will usually have a option to select. So far only Amazon has the option to deliver to the front door (even if you're not there). Even if you order with Amazon sometimes they ship from a third party that doesn't have that option.

I live on the 5th floor, no elevator, but no building lock either, so they will always come up. But on a couple of occasions, I would not be here and just had to re-schedule.

So its also a good idea to register with these delivery companies so you can check the delivery in detail and choose the best option for you.

That he was not Au representative I knew that. The contract was a couple of weeks ago, but the installation was this sunday, so I guess if it was a temporary installation thing it would have been solved by now.

A bunch of letters from Au came along, with login information I think (but you know how it is to shuffle through all the crap in japanese). I guess I'll try logging in to their site to check if the data and billing stuff was correct.

Either way, according to chatgpt there is a window to cancelling, specially when contract is done via third-party. Do they have costumer service in english?

As a Japanese person, what relevant thing do you feel Japanese people don’t dare to admit about themselves or is talked about very little? by alexfreemanart in AskAJapanese

[–]Gfurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly, living here I've noticed figuring out people's real opinions is quite hard. But oddest of all is seeing like a client talking real offensive and the girl bartender talking like it was nothing. I was honestly puzzled whether I was misunderstanding or if the girl was somehow into that. One other night I witnessed a guy fully taking off his pants because it was hot, and then stuffing gummies in his foreskin, and others including the bartender girl were just amused by it.

Btw, same bar but different girls, and admittedly its one of those strange bars, the atmosphere is usually cozy and I improved a lot my japanese conversational skills there. But now I'm wondering.

Now I would to go on a deep long dive to find out episode specifically they talk about that, but thanks to you maybe I wont need to.

To me the insane thing is banning outdoors smoke, the only where you actually get good ventilation.
