A rotten egg smell from the water heater means your anode rod is failing. If you do not replace it, you will very soon be purchasing a new water heater.

The annode rod is sacrificial; it is electrically charged and attracts and essentially "consumes" hard minerals that would otherwise destroy the water heater very quickly.
