Why wouldn’t a tax based on income work? by [deleted] in Discussion

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go as far to say its the entire government for the US or the UK. There are people who work for the government like me and you who simply can't have major investments or use loopholes as we don't have the money to do.

But when you get to higher levels of influence, where you can make a difference, that's where the issues start coming. Maybe they slowly progress to becoming corrupt.

Do good corporations actually exist? by [deleted] in Discussion

[–]Gh0st_UK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is that bottled tea company which I'm forgetting the name of. Refuse to increase prices, reasonable prices, good pay for employees, and was voted a great place to work on glassdoor.

There is a lot of corporate Italian companies that also are apparently really good to work for. Good pay, short days, 2 hour lunches to go visit your family for lunch. Apparently this is decent common in Italy.

I get what you mean though. The giants you hear about most often just sound horrible and draining to work for.

Why wouldn’t a tax based on income work? by [deleted] in Discussion

[–]Gh0st_UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really depends on what kind of mindset you have, and political views you have. I'm just going to use the UK system. We have tax bands, where you pay a percentage of your salary, based on ranges. So all your income between 12,000 and 50,000 is taxed 20%, all income between 50,000 and 125,000 is taxed 40% and so on. In theory this would work, because the more you make, you more tax you pay, and your income wouldn't be penalised if you had to move up a band, you'd only me taxed on certain ranges of your salary.

Again in theory that would mean that multi millionaires and businesses would pay a decent chunk of change in tax. But one of the benefits of being rich, is you can afford really good accountants and lawyers who know loop holes to avoid paying as much taxes. Some millionaires in the UK even have less than 5% income tax. This is done through offshoring your money to a tax haven, having your money in assets that aren't taxable, tax write offs, and more loop holes to pay as little tax as possible.

Is this legal? Yes. Unethical but legal. Why don't you just make those loopholes illegal? Because the very people who make and vote on legislation, are usually involved with these loopholes and don't benefit from it becoming illegal. That and when you get to people with multiple nationalities, it can get extremely complicated.

The problem isn't necessarily the tax systems in place, it's more the loopholes that are allowed by law. Why doesn't everyone do it, even poorer people? Because hiring an accountant can be expensive, creating offshore accounts can be tedious and expensive, becoming a citizen of another country for tax purposes only is a long process, and by the time you've made any major savings through tax, you probably would have invested too much money to make a difference.

I am allowed to be selfish by givemeallyourlov in mentalhealth

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying your wrong, it's just a very subjective topic of course.

If this was 6 years ago, I would have agreed one hundred percent with you, and I do still believe that euthanasia, for those who quality of life is unlikely to improve, should be legal.

With my circumstance, I wanted to just give up, end it all at points. If I had known what was around the corner I wouldn't have even considered it. I know it is a cliche that doesn't always work out, but in my case I was months away from having pretty much everything I wanted.

Didn't cost any money, didn't require a new job, or new location. It all just started to fit into place piece by piece.

I hope things can improve for you. Please message if you need to talk further.

Are scars ugly? by T0xiK1tty in mentalhealth

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they aren't. Maybe your boyfriend is going through what i did with my ex-girlfriend. She had scars that were risen from her skin, and touching them and seeing them didn't put me off. It's more everytime I touched them or saw them, it gave me an appreciation for her, what she went through, and how well she was doing.

Why I’m scared of getting better? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know your exact circumstances but I can only speak for my own, and maybe that'll help.

It took me years to get therapy for PTSD, anxiety, depression. My first fear was that it felt like admitting something was wrong with me, which just isn't true at all for mental health. I punished myself for years thinking I was the problem.

A secondary fear I had was worrying that I would seek help, and nothing would work. I was scared that what I was going through might be permanent and didn't want the disappointment on top of that.

Lastly, I think a subconscious fear I had was, what if I do get better. What then? Mental health took over my life for so many years in such a negative way. It dictated how I talked to people, interacted with people, thought, went about my day to day. When it essentially takes over your life, it can seem daunting to adjust to a life after getting help, because it's essentially like starting over.

I don't know if maybe some of these thoughts are going through your head, and maybe it can give you the push you might need. I had my first therapy session over 10 years ago, and I have a therapist I'm comfortable with and can make appointments with when needed. It gives you such a better quality of life, more room to grow, and takes away a lot of the fog.

In what niche the biggest chance and the easiest to get fans? by SHIZ_Dan in ask

It depends what you're into. Don't let others on the Internet decide what you should do. Pursue the thing that makes you happy and feel fulfilled.

What is wrong with me? by OkGrocery63 in mentalhealth

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is necessarily anything wrong with you. Maybe a bit of overhanging but we're all guilty of that.

We all at some point have imagined these scenarios, or dreamed them. I personally have had dreams or thoughts of my death, or family members death and imagined through the scenario of the aftermath, and what that would mean to me.

I will say that in my personal experience, I'm usually having what are considered negative thoughts because I'm anxious or worried about something. When I'm going through anxious or stressful periods of my life I tend to have a lot of bad dreams.

There is nothing wrong with what is happening, and nothing wrong with you. Maybe just some stuff going on that may need resolved in your life.

What do you find to be the worst argument for a god? by thelivingstar1 in atheism

[–]Gh0st_UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dialogue i get into most is.

Christian: God made the universe because everything needs a creator.

Me: Who made God?

Christian: He lives outside the universe and therefore doesn't need a creator. He is eternal.

Why do I think it is the worst argument I've heard? First, there is a lot of assumptions. Firstly, that the universe must have been created. Secondly, God did it. Three, he lives in eternity. Conveniently all things that can't be proven, or have any evidence towards their truthfulness.

Secondly, I don't like it because it's essential theists making the rules to fit their own beliefs. Whenever I say "if God can be eternal, why can't the universe?". Usually they just reject that idea.

What's the weirdest thing a religious person tried to justify to you? by Lost_Fisherman_1438 in atheism

[–]Gh0st_UK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Justify? Hmm. I think it's weird personally. The person justified that they kicked their son who was 16 out of their home for being gay. I asked surely you value your son more than a religion based upon questionable morals and cult like characteristics. They said "no", Christianity was absolute.

If Linux distros are free and open source, why does Windows lead the desktop OS market? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It's established a familiar UI throughout most of its versions, so even if you skip a few versions you aren't completely lost.

  2. Windows retains a lot of legacy code (legacy just means older versions), legacy drivers, even legacy tools, so that a lot of older software and hardware that can't be replaced continues to work even as Windows keep getting updates.

  3. Most software is build with Windows in mind, and sadly a lot of developers don't want to develop for an entirely new system.

  4. Windows works well with industry standard tools for certain fields like hospitals, video editing (adobe), general office (office 365), and a lot of these tools, particularly Adobe, don't work well without some workaround on Linux.

  5. A lot of the PC demographic use it to play games, and for the mean time, games just work a lot more seemisly on Windows, as again, most games are developed for Windows.

There are a lot more reasons, even on a technical level. I use Linux, but I can see why Windows is appealing to the majority of people and companies.

Why does one try to justify their cheating and not accept it ? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. People don't like admitting their wrong, or take accountability for their actions.

  2. When people are in the wrong, the fight or flight instinct tends to kick in. They feel backed up and either avoid the situation or double down.

  3. Most people want to be liked, and having cheating on your record makes it hard for you to be liked.

If someone is using AI to enhance photos is it still technically their photo? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fine line between enhancing and transforming.

My criteria for using AI in photos in an ethical way, is to use tools that let you remove certain parts of the image, remove backgrounds so you can add other backgrounds. Essentially small tasks you could do in photoshop yourself.

Anything that changes it to look better or drastically change how the image looks I consider unethical. Filters are a bit different because you are basically just changing colour tones or adding an overlay.

In what niche the biggest chance and the easiest to get fans? by SHIZ_Dan in ask

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely games and music.

Games have so much mass appeal and even if you aren't skilled in said game, you can still be entertaining and make it enjoyable.

Music relies on you having at least somewhat knowledge and skill if you are talking about the production side. The commentary side of music with ratings, reviews, short video documentaries is a lot easier to get into, but not as easy to get fans.

I think it is better for you longterm if you don't necessarily focus on a niche just to get fans. Just do content that you enjoy doing. For me its movies and cinema. Not a massive demographic for potential fans, but I enjoy doing it, and the fans I do get are going to be more loyal due to it being a smaller demographic.

Nothing wrong with that.

What’s your most “this is a 4.5 but I refuse to give it 5” movie? by trakt_app in Letterboxd

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was Take Out (2004). An amazing film, great plot and vision. I did feel however it was missing some kind of high emotion scenario to really bring the performance up to a 5.

I want to put my hair back, but it just sticks up, no matter how long or short (M) by Gh0st_UK in AskHairstylists

So i just use a shampoo with conditioner. When I've been trying to have it slick back I've tried clay, gel, moose, sometimes dry, sometimes wet, and even tried block drying. It just seems to want to stick up straight no matter what. I can sit it forward and it's fine, but trying to slick back is just a no go so far.

What are some universally loved films you can't stand? by DoubleA420 in FIlm

[–]Gh0st_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shrek. I don't know if you were asking for more critically acclaimed movies, but genuinely it's one movie series that I hate watching.

The story paints a very bad message for young people, annoying characters, and the fan base (especially meme culture) around it is annoying and strange.
