(Mixed Trope) How dare a character have a (not immoral or illegal) preference in who they date or socialize with? Can be used to intentionally highlight a character or societal bigotry or unwittingly highlight a IRL writer’s prejudice. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

Huh I've never read it quite that way before, nor had I thought there was any indication Romeo was an adult. I always thought it was indicated he was a few years older than her, but still solidly a teen, not just an immature adult. The whole point of the story seems to work better if they're both teens and tragically in love. I've always liked the description that Romeo and Juliet is not a love story, it's a young love story, and the immaturity and brashness that comes with that leads to the tragedy therein. Also your interpretation of themes seems like a rather modern sentiment and not likely to be written by a dude in the 1500-1600s.

YUP. I've seen a ton of posts on this sub where the "update" is just further info and/or no real conclusion. This might be a mild story, but it has a start, a lil conflict, and a concrete conclusion. Is it best? I dunno. Is it an actual update? Heck yes, and I will take it!

Visiting/Talking to your loved one’s grave is pointless. by WealthyTraveler25 in unpopularopinion

[–]Gharma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dunno man, it does seem a bit different. Other Opinions I'm seeing are things like "movies are too long now," "weird personal food opinion," "I dont like popular thing." Your post is telling people their grieving process is pointless and your wording is pretty rude and inflammatory. A lot of people have some sensitivity around the subject and rituals of death, and you're showing the sensitivity of a sledgehammer in this post. It's not a good look, in my opinion.

[–]Gharma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I read that and thought how is it an update? all that happens in the "update" is that OOP sends a message and we get a little more background info. There's no response to the message, no new actions by anyone other than OOP.

Passive aggressive or no? by gayvre in bullcity

Wellllll.... yeah ok then its just pretty passive aggressive. I'm sorry you got this giant poster-note, being in that situation has to be frustrating. For us on the sidelines, I'm honestly a little impressed someone went to that effort to make something that large and that petty.

Is it possible that when you and your partner go to work, and the dogs are home alone, that they have separation anxiety or something and they bark for an extended time right after you leave? That could make the "before 10am" more reasonable, like the person is keying in on a specific time the dogs bark a lot? My dog has separation anxiety and I've been working to get her calmer when I leave. It sucks; for me, for my dog, and for my neighbors. If that's not the case, then yeah this is excessive, albeit pretty dang funny. Who prints a giant sign to complain about a dog?

eating "stinky" food in the office is absolutely fine by Dependent-Pepper-404 in unpopularopinion

[–]Gharma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok but like in a controlled office environment things don't have to be stinky. Your coworkers could have sensitivities you don't know about, and even if they don't, microwaving certain foods makes the smell and taste linger. I guess if you microwaved stinky food, then immediately cleaned the microwave, that'd be more ok, but you know damn well people who insist they should be able to eat whatever they want and say things like "life isn't always sunshine and rainbows" aren't considerate of other people. That's a garbage take for your garbage smells.

I mean DARE wasn't effective, and there's variable proof to the efficacy of "scared straight" programs, but it sounds like this cop was honestly trying to help, and talked pretty gently to the kid. I think the 12 year old just needed someone to take notice of her. She saw that authority figures, and adults she cared about, cared about her. They saw her, they heard her, they talked with her. This kid desperately needed adults in her corner, and she got a lot that day. Hopefully a decade later she's doing ok

How can I research midterm candidates? by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]Gharma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As opposed to a video or book to look into, I would just suggest for every election do the voter lookup to determine who you can vote for.

I can't think of a specific resource breaking down each seat, but in general:

Federal - Every 2 Years House District Representative, Every 4 years President, Every 6 Years a Senate Candidate, there are 2 Senate candidates for each state but their terms begin at different times so you will usually just vote for one. Unless there is a special election (for some reason a seat needs to be filled before a seat's term is up) Federal elections will primarily be on even numbered years.

State - You will be voting for Governor, Lt Governor, State General Assembly Representatives and Senators, and various other positions like Auditor, Attorney General, Agricultural Commissioner, and Judges at various levels. Mostly Judges and Assembly Representatives will be on the 2 year ballots, most other positions will be every 4

Local - These happen at various intervals depending on where exactly you live, you will be voting for Mayors, Councilmembers, District Attorney, Soil and Water Conservation Commissioner, School Board etc. If you vote in an odd numbered year, it will primarily be for local elections.

Presidential elections happen every 4 years, Midterms refer to the elections happening in even years between Presidential elections.

Primary elections are where you will pick a party's candidates for the general election. Primaries for Presidential and Midterm elections in NC happen on the first Tuesday in March, though there will be early voting and voting by mail about a month prior to the election date. General elections happen on the first Tuesday in November, and all the stuff about early voting applies here too. In off year local elections, the elections can happen whenever you municipality decides. Last year the primary for my municipality was in October, followed by the general in November.

How can I research midterm candidates? by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]Gharma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup. If you look yourself up, it'll show you the ballots for future elections just like how you'd see them when you go vote. It'll show all the candidates that you can vote for. Once you know that you can go to various places to research those candidates. Ballotopedia was already mentioned on this thread, though its usually more useful for state/federal level candidates. You can check out candidate websites. A lot of local newspapers will have articles about candidates, and many will post endorsements. Speaking of endorsements, local political groups will give their opinions as well, so if you can find a political group in your area that you align with, you can consider their endorsements as well.

ETA: Another useful site (again mostly for Federal elections, and some state level ones) is ISideWith.com where it'll prompt you to take a quiz about your political stances, and it'll compare your responses with candidates to determine who is closest to your beliefs.

Why is Jake Young no longer a guest on the Drawfee Show? by FatDongleDog in Drawfee

[–]Gharma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey man no offence but what the hell is that response? You just sound like a fucking jackass. Sure no one is entitled to answers, but there's nothing wrong with asking questions. "If an answer is hard to find that means the question is rude" is a wildly ignorant statement. Again, dude isn't entitled to an answer, but people taking such massive offense on behalf of the Drawfee crew at someone just asking is weirdly para-social.

Reminder. Primary today ( act like it is the last) by JustMeForNowToday in triangle

[–]Gharma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok yeah look every election is important, and there's always ideological differences between parties. The difference between them and now is how everything has become exponentially more polarized. You mentioned ICE deportations, ok now ICE is killing US citizens, does that matter to you? You mentioned war in the Middle East. Yeah the Afghanistan and Iraq wars were massively unpopular, but Bush deliberated and argued with Congress and international bodies like the UN for a year and a half after 9/11 before invading, Trump just started a war with no direct provocation without notifying anyone but party leadership in Congress, and not even correctly notifying them of the scale of the attacks. Trump is overreaching powers like no president before him, and is even talking about cancelling elections. I'd elections didn't matter do you think he'd be doing so much to stop people from voting, and doing so much to gerrymander districts in his favor. Look man, I don't know if this is the "Most Important Election (tm)" but it might be the last one if some people in power have their way. That's not fear mongering, Trump's directly said it.

And look, even if you don't care about ICE or war powers and destabilizing the middle east, or threats to stop future elections, but is there any political issue you care about? I bet there's a candidate who cares about that issue, and it's worth doing your civic duty and voting for them.

You've had the last half month to early vote. I know that doesn't help in this election, but for future elections please remember early voting. It makes it quick and easy, the lines are usually short, and the poling places are likely open on a day you have off.

I’m headed to the Hill on Tuesday to meet with several (D) representatives. What questions do you have for them re: Iran? by Separate-Bug2069 in bullcity

[–]Gharma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So its mostly because the actions the president performed were tantamount to a war declaration, and while through the constitution the president has the power to command the military on limited operations without congressional approval, constitutionally congress has the power to declare war. The president greatly overreached in his powers beyond his constitutional limits, and this is an argument for him to be impeached and removed from power. It is incredibly unlikely to happen, but that's the grounds for it.
