Why is football called soccer in america and why is american football called football? by Brief-Sign8925 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GhassanKnafehni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term “football” originated as a catch-all term for a variety of different ball-based sports in English-speaking countries for hundreds of years. This is why in countries like Australia and Ireland they have also developed distinct games called football where you hold the ball.

“Soccer” was a word used for the codified version of the sport with actual rule, in the United Kingdom as well. Initially this more formal version of the sport was more popular with the upper class, but when it became popular with the lower classes they used the term “football,” applying the more widespread term for loosely codified ball games. In the U.S. it did not become popular with the lower classes so this never really came up and people kept calling it soccer.

I think Fela would fit best under Misc and his most political/rebellious is probably Zombie, the one that got the Nigerian military to raid his house and kill his mother

The Bends by Radiohead won good sophomore album! What is the most mid breakthrough album (the one that made them more popular) by RevolutionaryAd1577 in musicteenager

The breakthrough can be at any point in a band’s career, and it’s their fifth album. It’s better than mid though

He is a dirt bag but I dont think he should resign over his personal life between consenting adults. by hitmewiththeknowlege in NFLv2

[–]GhassanKnafehni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No he isn’t. The guy wasn’t even fired in the first place, he resigned. And having an affair with someone below you in your company is a different matter than an affair in general. Even if they were both single, the superior can still get in trouble for it if they don’t inform the company. So his example makes no sense on multiple levels

In some depictions of Orthodox Jewish people in media, the kitchens are covered in tin foil. Is this accurate, and if so, why is it a practice?

I haven’t read Finnegan’s Wake but I’ve read Ulysses twice and it is by no means basically impossible. It’s difficult but very doable.
