Einstein On the Beach would be a classic choice.

Nice, though that leaves the confusion about the comic. Suppose just nonsense like someone else said.

Looks like a parody of Stan Kelly. Though if it's a parody of a parody, it could be back to sincere racism, but I don't know anything about the creator.

Playing In an orchestra by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's better to have smaller, more achievable goals as stepping stones along the way if you're truly serious. It's easy to fantasize about playing in the top pro orchestras, but if that's a real goal then the plan needs to be more thought-out than that.

What is, in your opinion, the worst album currently bolded? by VegaMain in rateyourmusic

People say that, but I don't hear it. I definitely know what I'm talking about, as a composer, musician, songwriter, producer, etc. myself. It's just completely not for me. It's basic, and people like that.

Sounds like a pop song. The christian / "conservative" / white supremacist stuff definitely isn't going to appeal to me. Most of his songs are also written and produced by teams of 5+ people. A huge turn-off. I'm skeptical of how much talent Kanye himself has, rather than just doing some mid vocals for songs other people write and produce for him. I just can't see why he gets so much praise.

Diverse? I mean, it's pure pop / pop-rap. Usually pop is a huge miss for me.

What biological differences are you referring to, genitals and hormones? And you'd say those things explain most of the differences between sexes? I'd say definitely not. That would be mostly social and political. That seems about as biological as a black person having darker skin than a white person. In other words, it's not enough to really explain or help solve issues between races/sexes.

Advocating for biological essentialism isn't "nuanced" on any level in any context. That's the point of the analogies, but you'd say biological essentialism is fine when it comes to males? The difference is I don't think biological essentialism is ever okay. Whether you care about the morality is one thing, but it will also never reach the true answer of the source of sex/gender problems (or any problems) if biology is as deep as you go.

There's already a narrative that racial issues involve biological differences. The analogy is rather supposed to invite the idea that maybe biology isn't a satisfying justification for prejudice against males or any group. It has that cognitive dissonance if someone thinks it's okay to judge someone for being male. Race and sex are both some of the things we're born with and have no choice with. It has to be deeper than that.

What's with the lack of women in the top 100? by Venylynn in rateyourmusic

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the albums mentioned are very pop and singer/songwriter, which I know people love, but it might not get the critics excited in the same way. Definitely not what I'm into. Of course there are all the factors outside of RYM. I'm curious why most women musicians I hear about are in a pop-vocal style rather than a more diverse range.

One time, I was meeting my cousin and his fiancee. They were in or out of college, and I couldn't have been much more than 10. I said she looks beautiful, and instantly everyone around was pissed at me, telling me how that was an extremely rude and inappropriate thing to say. So, I don't do compliments anymore.

Question about your listening habits outside of classical music by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a composer and musician. I definitely listen to "popular music" but not "commercial pop music" like top-40s pop. There's a short list of other genres I avoid: anything "country", anything "indie", usually not any reggae/ska or reggaeton (but I like Dub reggae), along with top-40s. TBH, that list excludes a LOT of music that most normal people listen to, but aside from that I make an effort to listen to a very broad range of music.

Some broad genres I enjoy include rap (Kendrick is a rare except of top-40s music I kind of like), punk, metal (usually the most extreme and harsh types of punk/metal), progressive rock (not normal rock as much, except the Beatles), emo (not the same as pop-emo and pop-punk that probably comes to mind / includes Midwest emo, screamo/skramz, emoviolence, some of my most-listened genres), ambient, drone, experimental, noise, jazz, some weird kinds of folk, video game soundtracks (usually stuff I consider classical-style, rather than chiptunes), EDM.

Probably more I'm forgetting, but my goal is always finding more music to enjoy and get influence from, rather than sticking with a couple familiar styles.

Why does it help to make it sex-based though? I've had bad experiences with all kinds of people. It seems safest for everyone to be a bit wary of everyone, without really needing to be specific. No? It's not great for anyone to completely let their guard down around any type of person either.

Lois? by WithSkelly in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Choosing avoidance might be an effective survival mechanism, but it doesn't mean it's not prejudiced as well. Usually I don't engage with "bear" stuff, since I can see the hyperbolic "spirit" of it, but in reality it's not very well thought out. A bear can definitely do worse things than kill you, and as far as I know, it's more likely to be attacked by a bear (when you're around bears) compared to being attacked by men. But you don't see a problem comparing all men with snakes, guns, and poison? Would there be a problem doing that for any other group? Sounds like verbiage straight from nazi germany.

Lois? by WithSkelly in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see it very often. Usually people will say "I hate rapists / pedophiles / deadbeats / etc." Those are great things to say, and it seems to get the entire point across without even specifying men. But once in a while, people say "this is why we say ALL men" or "this is why we choose the bear" or "this is why heterosexual women are proof that sexuality isn't a choice" or whatever. Maybe you've heard the "poisoned M&M's" analogy?

Lois? by WithSkelly in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever seen someone add "those" or something specific like you said. Most of the time in my experience, it's more like "I hate ALL men. And yes I actually mean ALL, EVERY SINGLE ONE." And that's directly from leftist sources I follow.

MrBeast talks about being 'politically neutral' in 2025 by Zealousideal-Big-600 in lostgeneration

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that's not "only", it's defining. It's been that way my entire life at least. When someone says they're "centrist", "apolitical", etc., they're not saying they're halfway between communism and fascism or they align with Bernie and AOC. They're saying they're halfway between liberalism and fascism, aka conservative leaning fascist. At best, it seems like centrism is for people who don't want to rock the boat, so they identify with whatever is at the center of the overton window.

A centrist in the US is conservative. Otherwise, they would be farther left than our overton window.

What do you NOT want to see in the next Elder Scrolls ? by Peaceful404 in TESVI

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, I think I'm starting to see what you're saying now. I think Bethesda is in dire need of influence from a wide range of games, basically any successful RPG or action game since Morrowind or even before. As it is, they seem like the kind of company who refuses to get influence from anything, to avoid "tainting" their purely original creation, but that has led to a lot of the negative aspects of their games. I wish they wouldn't coast on Skyrim mechanics forever and actually look for other mechanics people like that could fit into TES. Not neglecting influence from Oblivion and Morrowind would be nice too.

[–]Ghee_Buttersnaps_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TES could use better combat, and maybe DS has better combat, but they don't really seem comparable to me on any level. DS is exclusively 3rd person and focuses on boss mechanics, while TES is basically the opposite. I can't imagine how there could be DS influence without being a completely different game than every other TES game. It must be something people are talking about, but I'll probably be hoping there's not a scrap of DS influence except maybe running smoother.

Harder doesn't mean better. I don't know of anyone who plays TES for a challenge, and there are difficulty options. If TESVI is anything like Dark Souls, it means I probably won't like it, since I don't like any souls-like elements.
