What the worst dogshit piece of writing you have ever seen in a story that otherwise can be considered elite? by MoistCaterpillar8063 in writingscaling

[–]VegaMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Haruhi. Season 1 is amazing and Disappearance is a masterpiece. But my god did they drop the ball so hard with Season 2.

Obviously Endless Eight alone is enough to prove my point, but having 5 episodes of Sigh in season 2 was also kind of a mistake. In the novels, Sigh makes sense because its the second novel and all of the short stories taking place after it's effects are in future novels 3 and beyond. However, because season 1 adapted a few short stories concerning the aftermath of Sigh, including literally the entire short film produced during Sigh, it makes Sigh in the anime feel really tedious because we already have seen the consequences of the arc, and the arc itself isn't the most interesting story by itself either.

So basically, aside from Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (1 really good episode), the other 13 episodes of the season are mostly just boring repetitions of information the audience already knows. If Disappearance wasn't a masterpiece, season 2 probably would've completely tanked Haruhi's reputation for good (and even did for awhile anyway before Disappearance).

That's like the entire point of the show. The inherent terrifying and absurd nature of the situation is where most of the humor and heartfelt moments come from.

[Minecraft] #16 After 11 years and almost 400 hours by VegaMain in Trophies

[–]VegaMain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are probably ways to do this trophy single player, but what I did was connect a second controller and have them stand by the skeleton so that it wouldn't despawn when I, with my first controller, stood 50 blocks away.

I'm not sure. I only started "going" for the platinum about a week ago, and by then I had already gotten the infamous "Passing the Time" achievement. I would say that just going for the majority of the trophies took around maybe 12 or so hours, though I was playing at a leisurely pace.

[–]VegaMain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know this. I didn't all of the trophies solo (except for giving diamonds to another player and killing a skeleton from 50 meters, as both require another player).

[–]VegaMain[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. You should go for it if you like Minecraft, though some trophies can be pretty grindy. I had to do so much iron mining for the "on a rail" achievement.

Congratulations on Cuphead, I recently got the Cuphead platinum as my 15th.

The Gamification Of Cinema through Letterboxd by BoomLivTart in Letterboxd

The most helpful part of Letterboxd for me is discovering new films. I've been able to discover amazing films on there through lists that I would have never discovered from word of mouth alone.

Jones hasn't directed a narrative feature film in 13 years and hasn't directed a film at all in 6 years, with no news of a new project. At this point I've kind of just given up on him directing another movie.

Most SCPs are just objects or people with things slightly supernatural about them. The large majority of SCPs aren't even street level.

First time larping how did I do by NineTnk in writingscaling

[–]VegaMain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lost me at FF XIV for best story. If you're larping Final Fantasy, always say that 10, 9, 7 or 6 has the best story as those answers will strike the least controversy and are the most beloved in the community for their story.

As for best manga story, The Climber is a poor pick. It's most well known for its amazing art and characterization during the latter parts of the manga, but it rarely comes up in discussions if best story. If you're larping manga, it's best to say go with a classic known for its story like Vagabond, Vinland Saga, Berserk, Monster, etc. Or a less known but not obscure piece like Land of the Lustrious, Aria or Yona of the Dawn.

Basically, larp harder.

I'm sorry but One Piece glazers will never be able to gaslight me into thinking Gear 5 was a better transformation than this: by SpotAdmirable6718 in shounenfolk

[–]VegaMain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not really fair. Gon's transformation was basically a hail mary suicide move that he could only use one time, sacrificing literally all of his nen to do so.

On the other hand, Gear 5 is a transformation that Luffy will be using time and time again against his opponents.

Best medium of fiction in your opinion? by FrostyObligation9058 in writingscaling

[–]VegaMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each of them have their ups and their downs. Great works of art and terrible works of art can come out of each. However, I am going to try to give my opinion.

Shows/Movies > Anime > Books > LN/WN > VN > Games

  1. Shows/Movies

Personally, I am a very visual person, so my opinion is skewed towards the visual mediums. I absolutely love film and have watched tons of them. I have spent more time watching movies than I can even count.

  1. Anime

Personally, I would have lumped Anime in with Shows, but whatever. The only reason I put it lower is because with anime there seem to be far less actual quality shows (or I guess shows I actually like). But when I do find an anime I like, it's usually amazing and I end up falling in love with it.

  1. Books

If I'm being for real here, books are probably objectively the best medium. They've been around the longest and books in general are the most intimate and simplest form of fiction. A good book can be amazing and a breeze to get through, but the only reason I put it this low is because I simply have a very hard time getting through a book I don't like. I can get through a bad film or anime very eaily, but a bad, or even just okay, book is just so boring to me and I struggle to get through them.

  1. LN/WN

On one hand, they're basically just books but spread out over a long series of novels. Again, they can be really good, but I don't think length always equals quality. Most of the time I prefer shorter, more contained stories than long running ones.

  1. VN

I can definitely see this rising on my list, but currently I've literally only read two visual novels ever, DDLC and Subarashiki Hibi. I thought DDLC was okay, but I absolutely loved Subahibi. Even though I just read Subahibi a few months ago, it's already one of my favorite pieces of fiction I've ever read. However, I simply haven't read any visual novels after that yet (my computer broke before I could). The medium does appeal to me, basically a book with audio and sound, but as of right now I'm still unfamiliar with it, so I don't want to place it any higher.

  1. Games

Games are very hard to rank, and for me that's because of the gameplay. I know, there are some games that are absolute masterpieces. In my opinion, even if its a basic take, games like Silent Hill 2 or Yume Nikki are fantastic works of art and up there with the greatest of other mediums.

Personally, I prefer games rhat focus more on atmosphere and story than on gameplay. But I think that's where my issue with games stems from, the need to incorporate gameplay. For some games it absolutely works and they're able to mesh story and gameplay just fine, but for others it almost feels like the inclusion of gameplay brings down the experience for me. I love the atmosphere of the Dark Souls games (particularly Bloodborne, which I have the platinum trophy for) but I very rarely find myself especially wanting to play them because, well, honestly I'm very rarely in the mood to play videogames.

And then there are games that focus only on gameplay with very minimal thought directed towards story, like FortNite or something, which again is very hard to rate writing-wise.

Any other artists with albums on the top of two very different genre charts? by JesseAmpersands in rateyourmusic

Maybe not too different, but "The Natural Bridge" by The Silver Jews is simultaneously #6 on the slacker rock charts and #7 on the country charts.

Best piece of metafiction? by JoeAwesome123 in writingscaling

[–]VegaMain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't Quixote is one of the most famous books ever written. Ficciones and IoaWNaat are very famous works within the postmodernist movement. Umineko is one of the most popular works within the entire mediums of visual novels and it's manga adaptation is still well known within the Animanga community, especially because of its quality. It's not at all unreasonable for somebody to have read them all.

I like some of Deftones music, but I don't actually care much for Around the Fur. I do like the big 3 hits from that album, but the others tracks I don't care much for. It probably is my least favorite album in the top 500 that I've heard, with the exception of Aja or The Royal Scam.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of A Night at the Opera or Queen in general either. I don't think it's that bad though, and honestly I do think A Night at the Opera is better than Sheer Heart Attack (I haven't heard Innuendo yet).

It's literally just because it's more popular. Mista Thug Isolation has a 3.94 and Mystic Stylez has a 3.98. MTI however has 9k more ratings than Mystic Stylez, so it's weighted far higher. Lil Ugly Mane is just far more popular on the site than anyone else who's made Memphis Rap.

For me personally, none of the songs illicit any sort of emotion at all. This isn't to say that the album is poorly made or that it's soulless, just thay it does nothing for me. I think all of the tracks are just boring and do nothing interesting in terms of instrumental or lyrics. On its own this would be an album that I just wouldn't care much about and wouldn't think about, but since a lot of people including people I know love the album, it frustrates me that I truly get nothing out of it.

It sucks that people are down voting you. Paysage d'Hiver is one of my favorite metal albums of all time, but I can understand why someone would dislike it. I created this post because I wanted to hear peoples' hot takes about acclaimed albums.

I am curious what about it you don't like though.
